Painted my bags and trunk
« on: June 01, 2012, 07:47:30 PM »
After a week of working on getting the bags and trunk painted I got them done. I think they are pretty close to the bike color. They are a bit of a shade light on the blue color but I can live with it. The grey came out spot on. I like the two-tone effect. The grey lower color on the 06 is stunning. Was not sure about the grey on the trunk at first but now that I painted it on I like it. Still have some cutting and polishing to do on the bags but I am pleased. Just had to wheel the bike out and get a good look at it in the sun. I decided to remove the reflectors on the bags but keep the Concours emblems. I will move them up to were the reflectors were. The bike is starting to get there

I have a 2006 as well and really like what you've done with the painting.   If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, consider yourself flattered, as I'm likely to imitate at least some of your paint scheme.   Nice job!!  Bravo Zulu.

That looks awesome!

How hard was it to get them sanded flat and have it turn out that nice?
Say what?

Thanks for the comment. I did not sand the bags. I know that my be hard to believe but I use a heavy fill primer after cleaning the bags with PPG gease and wax remover. I scuff sanded the bags and trunk with a red then grey scotchbrite pads between coats. Then 5 coats of base and 5 coats of clear. Cut and polish and you are done. $140.00 of product.

I am at work answering your post so I do not have the cans in front of me. However I know I used PPG Delfleet primer. The basecoat was waterbased by PPG and so was the clear coat. i will look when i get home and PM you if you would like.

Awesome look, I'm jealous every time you post pics of your bike (and I like my bike a lot!). I would love to copy the look, but lack the painting skill. Also, I would have to find out if my leg would bend far enough behind me to kick my own @$$ after the first time I dragged a boot across the bag mounting the bike! It wouldn't be the first time I mounted up, maybe not even the seccond, but it would happen :yikes:

I too had the same concern. However since I painted them I have yet to hit them. I guess in my mind i know that the bags are painted and I am more carefull when getting on. THE WIFE ON THE OTHERHAND IS ANOTHER STORY :banghead: Made a set of suff plates for the top of the bags that may help over the long run but we will see.
