Originally there was a black vinyl sleeve covering the main bracket as in this pic


I didn't like how the sleeve fit or looked. So I removed it, filed off any burrs and painted it flat black
I also added silver bolt that you can see in the center of the upright holding the back pad. This allows
you to adjust the angle of the back pad giving you more lumbar support.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics that show it well but here are 2 of the bike with the drivers backrest on.

I have always wondered how effective a backrest is for the driver. I am not sure I would even be able to lean back on it since I lean forward. I am 5'11". How does it feel? Do you have stock bars? Risers? Heli bars?

So my bars were 3" higher and 1 1/4" further back. But your right, with out risers or different bars there is no point in the back rest.

 I now have Heli Bars Horizon ST bars with a Corbin seat.
