Is something going to happen? Why didn't the Myans keep the calendar going?

How could they get the calendar so right, but the end of the world happens BEFORE christmas?
-
I'm not preparing or doing anything different than any other day.

Perhaps Spain killed the Myans BEFORE they could finish their calendar? :D
-
Good for them...

yeah this Myan thing so many fear reminds me of the Y2K farce

It's the first day of winter, and another good reason to lift your glasses :chugbeer:

Y2k was no farce. If you were in IT at the time you would know that. So much prep was done before hand that it was basically a non-issue.

The farce portion was all the preachers and such talking that gloom trash and the fear tactics, such as many are talking today.
I know how much time and money was spent on it. I budgeted and managed a lot of that prep. That was back in the days before I even had my PMP :D

Remember this guy - he predicted the end too.

Can you imagine the fun you could have with one of the doomsday preppers by shutting the power off to their house at 12:01am 12/21/12? :o

Yeah that farce got me a great review at the end of the year for a successful Y2K remediation project!

When would the 'event' take place? Some areas of the world are a day ahead of other areas. So how would that work, maybe take an average?
-
And while Chicago Bears fans might think that doomsday is coming this Sunday, Packers fans know today is Aaron Rodgers' Day in Wisconsin. 12/12/12 is just meant for this guy wearing #12 in the Green and Gold livery.

Not to put a damper on the entertainment value of this thread, but the Mayan calendar is a cyclical one. Just like our calendar starts over on December 31, the Mayan calendar does the same thing only it's cycle is much, much longer. I forget what it was but something like 21 or 25,000 years. If I understand it correctly, it is the time it takes for our sun to orbit the center of our galaxy, just like our year is the time it takes for earth to orbit the sun.
So, essentially the Mayan calendar starts over on December 22.
Some if the facts may be in error but the basic gist of it is here, now back to the more entertaining discussion of the end of the world.
I just looked it up, the full cycle of the Mayan calendar is 7885 years.

The Mayans were unaware of KIPASS at the time they made that calendar. They had no idea the FOB would save the world.

It is precisely 11:11, and they call it Universal Time. UTC
Not sure where that is.

I think since the Mayans were in Mexico they were on US Central or Mountain time. So my plan is to party to celebrate the end of the world on Friday 12/21 and if I'm still alive at 12:01 Saturday 12/2, party to celebrate surviving the end of the world.

Drink so much that you can no longer read the clock and you'll get through just fine.

UTC is also known as GMT. Greenwich Mean Time.

I always get nervous this time of year when I look at the calender on my kitchen wall. According to that document, there are no days after December 31. I always fear the end of everything, until the VFW sends me a new calender in the mail, and I see that we have been granted another year of existence.
I suppose if someone digs up an old copy of one of these 2,000 years from now, they will wonder how we "predicted" the end of the world every 12 months.

I had a guy I used to ride with who worked on mainframes in the 80s. He basically had declining employement with the rise of the desktop PC and decided to leave IT as he was officially a dinosaur by the mid 90s. In 1998 he was contacted by his previous employer and hired as a consultant because they no longer had anyone left who could 'fix' the old computers.... He jokingly told them OK if they woudl pay $250/hr for his services.... They accepted and 1.5 years later (spring of 2000) he retired in and bough himself a nice goldwing.
I don't know the specfics but he basically said if those jokers don't upgrade between now an 2049 they might have a big problem, but he won't be aroudn to worry about it :) ???

That would be 2038 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem)

And to think, we get to do all this over again, and again, and again.
It all starts over, and over.
See you on the other side.
Ride safe all,
greg

We follow the Roman calendar, which added the leap year, something the Mayans never thought of, so really, I figure the end should have happened sometime 7 years ago or so.

Indeed. Somewhere out there a liberal is using this as "ammo" for his anti-gun ways.
