I spent last week up in Alaska for work. It is always interesting up there if you are into planes, as there are lots of old transport planes still being used as freighters, as well as all kinds of planes with skis, floats, or tundra tires.

Lots of DC-2's, -3's, and -7's still see use. The DC-7 is the preferred freighter for getting in and out of gravel strips. Unfortunately, the supply of spare parts will run out by the end of this year, and for every hour of flying, there is twelve hours of maintenance!

Lynden Air Freight has two or three C-130's that they use for freighters.

Anchorage is the second busiest air freight airport in the world, as all the heavy planes (747's, DC10's and Lockheed L-1011's) refuel there on their way to/from Asia and the east coast of the US. I've seen as many as fourteen 747's parked there refueling.

In Fairbanks I spotted this plane junkyard full of mostly DC-7's. Notice the radial engines sitting on the ground.

Just a mix of interesting planes I spotted at the Anchorage airport, and Lake Hood, the busiest float plane airport in the world.

No doubt there is some cost in speed and payload for those tires but when you are routinely landing off airport in Alaska, I'm sure its well worth it.

C-141 Retirement (LAST FLIGHT)

This certainly brought a tear to my eyes...  We were airlifted from Germany to Andrews via a C-141 Medevac variant back in late '68.

RAF Sculthorpe C-141 take off

And this was the base we initially left to go to Germany for the final evac on the C-141.  By the end of 1992, the base would be returned to the RAF and all US personnel would be gone.. :'(

What no comments of the Jet powered Waco?    :o

After 6 months and 19 pages....apparently not, however I thoroughly enjoyed the link to the Kyle Franklin Comedy Act.
I was baffled by what was supposed to be so mysterious about the Wild Waco mystery ship?

Maybe a video link will help with comments about the Jet powered Waco? Maybe not.  :-\
