Tis a sight to behold!

On this day in Air Force history --

1935:        Will Rogers and Wiley Post die when their aircraft, a hybrid Lockheed Orion-Explorer, crashes on takeoff near Point Barrow, AK.

1944:        Allied Air Forces fly 4,249 sorties in Mediterranean theater, land 9,000 airborne troops in Southern France.

1945:        After 6 and 9 Aug bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese government announces its intention to surrender unconditionally.

1958:     Congress creates the FAA with broad responsibilities over airways and air traffic, including military airports, and missile or rocket sites.

1964:        The President announces development of a counterinsurgency (COIN) airplane, which becomes the OV-10 Bronco.

1970:        Thru 24 Aug 2 new HH-53 rescue helicopters make 9,000-mile flight from Eglin AFB to Da Nang, S. Vietnam: 1st transpacific helo flight.

I've been on long flights before that that's got to be a new definition of long flight!

The RB-36 could stay aloft nearly 48 hours without refueling.  Course they had no refueling capability as most military aircraft have these days.

Saw four of these heading out to the bombing range today.  Still quite the elegant and distinctive looking fighter jet, and a pleasure to behold from the ground!

Here's a nice beauty shot showing off part of NASA's experimental aircraft fleet.

I got to crawl around inside a Vulcan in my earlier years. We used to party with the crew and ground crew while they were out on Midway Island.

It fascinates me how our two nations took such different routes of design to achieve the same objective  :1DeadBanana

Now that I'm 1/2 owner of an RV-3 project it's one of my favorite.
