Refueled by a VC-10, most excellent indeed.  As an airliner it holds the fastest speed between London and New York short of the Concorde.  Resided at 101 Squadron - Brize Norton.  Has been replaced by the Airbus A330 Voyager..which simply does not look as good as a VC-10.

Just watched an old TV show "Wings of the Red Star", it was on the TU-95 "Bear" bomber, what a plane, I would have loved to see one fly by just to hear the supposedly incredibly loud sound they make from the counter rotating props, all of which are spinning slightly faster than sound at the tips. 32 of them.

B-36 was louder..ask my dad, he lost part of hearing working on them.

I don't detect any jet noise in that sound bite so they must not have been 'turned on' at the time.  Typically they were only used on take off or quick acceleration events.

The SAC Mentality...

Cool story. My brother was a bombardier navigator on a B-52H in the late 70's with exactly that mission. I'll have to ask him what he thinks of the article.

No way! My brother did the same thing! He was stationed at K.I. Sawyer in the 70's. Drove up to Marquette in '75? to visit. The running joke was "We could sell the U.P. to the Russians and they still wouldn't be any closer to the Mainland U.S."

I grew up in SAC as an AF brat in the mid to late 50's through the latter 60's.  General LeMay was a force to be reckoned with and I know the hardships put on the personnel and families during those times.  But you know what, the Russians were scared to death of SAC and especially LeMay because they knew what he could do.  SAC never knew an aircraft that couldn't carry a Nuc.

If it couldn't carry a Nuc then they were figuring out ways so that it could..

I shed a tear when that P-40 Warhawk model bit the dust shortly after takeoff.   :(

My brother was at Kincheloe in the U.P. in 75 or 76. Is that the same as K.I. Sawyer? Graduated in 74 then nav school then B52 bomb school then Kincheloe. Then was reassigned to Elisworth a few years later. Didn't like being in the windowless hole bouncing around low level for hours on end so he got out in 80 I think. I wonder if they knew each other.
