Solo and mostly camping. Although I expect I'll break down and find a motel room occasionally.

Heck of a ride/adventure IMO.  Here’s wishing you the best and a safe ride.

BTW, not a lot of choices for eats on the road (89) between Livingston and Great Falls.  A few stops in White Sulphur Springs including bars and maybe one in Monarch IIRC.

Oh, and that stretch of 89 between Livingston and the little belts is what I call a prairie/valley ride.

From a distance and without warning, relámpago!

I had a feeling. I think I get enough of that around here. :)

 Many thanks for your help.

Just remember, if your going to stay near YNP do it in Cody, Wy.  If you stay in West Yellowstone it will cost you twice as much for not as much.

  • Where did all the posts go?!??
Where ever you go in that area, pack extra water and maybe some snacks (like granola bars and maybe a bag of jerky).  Places to stop and buy things are more plentiful then they used to be, but you still need to be prepared to fend for yourself, no matter what.

My buddy and I did Hwy 12 all the way from Lewiston ID to the SD boarder a couple years ago.  Another awesome way to cross MT and WY.  Especially between ID and MT.

Also, be on the lookout for the WSP, as they love to speed trap around the boarders, and the speeds in WY are still ridiculously low when off the Interstates.

If you plan on riding in BC Canada beware of the 7 day impound of your vehicle if you get caught speeding in our beautiful province.  Anything over 40km/hr ( approx 25m/hr) over the posted speed limit is an automatic impound.  There have been many people visiting BC that have been caught.  I think this is BS.

have a safe trip

Anyone else been to Wyoming’s Rib & Chop House in Cody or Famous Dave’s in Bozeman?

I've read the burgers are "right tasty" at the Bear Lodge resort near Burgess Junction.  I've been to the Lodge but don't know about the grub.  Anyone else?

Famous Dave's is the McDonald's of BBQ here in CO... As a misplaced Texan, I would not suggest it to any of my friends expecting good Q.

Well, just got back last Saturday from our adventure and it was amazing. Montana is a rider's paradise.

We trailered to Bozeman on 6/30, slept, and on the 1st we rode thru the North side of YNP and took in some of the attractions, but bailed out to the North-East entrance on to the Beartooth given all of the traffic in the park. The Beartooth was amazing, just a spectacular ride. We really wish we would have skipped the park that morning and rode the Josheph Highway instead.

On the 2nd we woke early and headed west out of Bozeman onto Highway 2 on to Highway 69 and headed towards Helena thru Boulder, MT running just to the west of the Elk Horn Mtns as far as we could. Once in Helena we headed west on 279 and took a left when we got to 200, and had just one spectacular ride over Fletcher's Pass. We continued to the North thru Swan Lake on to the Flathead to end up staying the night in Kallispel. If you ever have the time to stop in this town, I highly recommend the Fillet at Mot's. Such a great dinner.

We spend 2 nights in Kallispel due to weather (rain). And eventually made it over the Road to the Sun. We all loved the ride, but I suggest one look into the road conditions when going thru Glacier N.P. They currently have 3 miles of the road down to the dirt. And I am fine with the dirt, but they have applied a SERIOUS amount of brine to the dirt to help keep it firm and not washing away in the rain. The combination of brine and ground up tar they have put down built up a 1/2" thick crust of crud that looked like and turned out to be as tough as spray-in-bedliner on my headers, jammed into the radiator, and coated my CS-One with tar all the way up. It took 16 hours of work and 3 gallons of gasoline (the only thing I could find that would cut that stuff). Had to drain the coolant, remove the radiator, all of the exhaust, etc.........). Had we known, we would have rode in from the East and out from the East.

On the 4th we rode South on Highway 89, thru Helena from the North and hopped on Highway 15, and thought it was expressway, the scenery was great, and eventually we made it back to the truck in Bozeman on the night of the 4th to take in PBR's and Pizza in the hotel parking lot while watching downtown Bozeman celebrate the 4th.

I'm happy to hear that you had a good trip. It's to bad you missed Chief Joseph Hwy but that gives you a good reason to go back.

Beautiful area for sure.

OTOH, tar snakes for a few miles west of Dead Indian Pass were a pain last summer.

Have you been out there this year roadhound?

Hi Shokdimn, your right about the tar snakes on Chief Joseph Hwy. They have been getting worse for several years now. I remember when the road was dirt and gravel so what we have is a big improvement, even with the Tar Snakes.

I'm heading out in September. I've a friend who has never ridden in the Yellowstone area, so we're going in that direction.

Copy that.

I don’t know about you but I preferred the BTH when it was a bit rougher just a few years ago.  You know, before the repaving with the smooth asphalt.

Probably won’t be long before 16 and 14A in the Bighorns will also be smooth pavement from end to end too.  But then again, Wyoming & Montana winters have a way of returning “character” to those roads.

Hey, safe trip to ya’ll too!  Your friend is in for a real treat.  Especially since he/she is traveling with someone who knows the area.

Not really. I've been considering riding to Shoshoni and hitting the Wind River Canyon. I've helped some friends of mine move cows several times in those hills but I've never actually been through the canyon. But if I do that I will have to do a lot of back tracking to go through the big horns.  I'll see what I feel like doing when I hit Casper. I still have idea how I'm getting back. lol

Doing some last minute packing right now and I'll be leaving in the morning.

Far out!  Wish I could head out too.  Unfortunately, no “kitchen-pass” for me.  Once again, safe trip to ya.

Just made it back. The first mod I am getting after this trip is an aftermarket seat. I have a huge case of numb bum. Other than that life is good. I'll probably put some pictures up tomorrow. The entire trip covered right around 4k miles.

First question, did you ride the BTH?

Looking forward to some pix.
