Post by: RyanMCEnterprises on June 20, 2012, 12:40:49 PM
Hey everyone! It's about time to get this Group Buy for the 2008-2009 Kawasaki Concours Canyon Cage going! Please keep in mind this Group Buy is for the 2008-2009 Connies only! The discount will only be applied to the Canyon Cages and the Saddle Bag Guards for the 2008-2009 Concours. This Group Buy is going to end on Thursday, July 19th so that'll be the last day to get your orders in. This thread is basically a place for you to post any questions or comments you have regarding the Group Buy or the Canyon Cage itself. To place your order you can either call me directly at 866.886.2368 (toll free), email me, or even PM me through ZGGTR with your full name, shipping address, phone number, preference of black/chrome/raw, and credit card information. Please keep in mind that your card will not be charged until the product is ready to leave our facility. Also, please get your orders in as early as possible so we can get an accurate number of how many we can expect to sell so we can get enough produced! If you don't feel comfortable giving your credit card information this early, you can wait and have me call you when the product is ready to ship and give your payment information then.

Normal MSRP for the Canyon Cages is $275 and the Saddle Bag Guards are $175. These guards are available in black, chrome, or raw for those of you who want to color match!

I just wanted to let you know the email hasn't shown up in my box yet. I hate Microsoft Outlook with a passion and it does lag sometimes but I'm surprised your email hasn't popped up yet. Just wanted to let you know in case there's an issue. I don't want you to miss out!

Just to get an idea of time line - we call in the orders now until July 19. How long does it usually take after that for you to charge the card (or to ship the bars)? Am I looking at somwehre mid Aug before my card will be charged? The reason I am asking is so that I know when I expect to see the charge hitting my card so I can plan my finance accordingly - got some huge payments coming in, but do not want to miss out this opportunity.

You're pretty much right on! The group buy ends on July 19th then it'll take about 4-5 weeks to actually produce the bars themselves. Once the bars are produced we'll begin shipping. This should take place around the middle of August so you can expect us to charge the cards right around that same time!

My question is, on the gen 1, do you have to remove the cage before you can take off the body work? If so how hard is the cage to remove?

I cannot see the pictures anymore at work. But from memory, it appears perhaps you can remove the plastics with it on - maybe a chore though since they are so close to the plastic. My logic is that how often do you remove the plastics. I removed them only twice in my 2 years of ownership - so it is not a big deal to me if I have to take the cage off to remove the plastic.

Thank you guys for getting all of your orders in so early! It seriously makes it much easier on our part when we know how many cages we have to run. Also, it helps get your cages out quicker when we run the proper amount in the first production run instead of having to add more later or start a second production run (which slows everything down!) and we can only do that if people place their orders early enough as you guys have done so I thank you for that! Oh and we're up to 16 orders currently so keep 'em coming! I really want you guys to hit the maximum discount!

My question is, on the gen 1, do you have to remove the cage before you can take off the body work? If so how hard is the cage to remove?

You can loosen the body work without removing the cage itself but to completely remove the fairings the cage does need to come off. The cage itself isn't really that hard to remove, especially once you know what to expect from putting it on the bike. Some people said it took them an hour to get both sides on and others have said it's taken them 2+ hours so I guess it depends on your knowledge of mechanics and whether or not you have the proper tools at hand.

I'm not sure if we'll get many/any buyers from the COG site.  :o

I posted the new info in an existing thread and then someone by the name of VAGTR started a new thread on the subject. Bob thanked him for the info by giving him a ration of crap for his trouble.

Ryan,
As there are several Canyon threads I will try and use the most pertinent thread for my question.  I have a 2009 and it is equipped with a set of Ronnie's Pegs. I understand the Gen 2 has no problems but I am interested in your opinion on the Gen 1 bikes.  I have attached photos for comparison.  Thanks.

Yeaaa, it doesn't look like they're going to work together. However, that's not to say that they wouldn't work together with some slight modification to the pegs or the peg mount. What type of modification? I can't be sure without having both and tinkering around a bit. If you'd like to be the guinea pig for us and test it out, we can set up some arrangement where we waive the restocking fee and cover the shipping back to our facility if the part absolutely won't work. If you'd like to do this, we can speak more about it on Monday when I'm back in the office!

You grossly overestimate the "giveadamnatude" of the silent majority.  Most people don't agree with the heavy handed mod, nor give a crap about the "this board/that board Peyton Place" that has been the US COG of the last few years.  The people who frequent that board more than this will buy the bars if they want them, and won't be dissuaded by that thread.

Their primary purpose is tip-over.  Combined with rear bars, however, they probably will offer significant protection at speed, also.

But nobody would guarantee that, nor is anyone going to put the money into R&D to see what would happen in a 30 mph slide with the bars.

Unfortunately, we'll find out SOMETIME how they do with some speed.  But that will be an anecdotal example, and your experience could easily vary.

Are these only tip over guards?  Would they do much at say 30 mph?

Unfortunately situations can vary greatly at that speed (high side, low side, t-bone, etc.). However, with that said, I'm confident these bars would hold up in some situations and probably be demolished in others so it really just depends. As others have said they weren't designed for that nor can we guarantee they'd hold up at that speed.

Their primary purpose is tip-over.  Combined with rear bars, however, they probably will offer significant protection at speed, also.

This!

But nobody would guarantee that, nor is anyone going to put the money into R&D to see what would happen in a 30 mph slide with the bars.

Unfortunately, we'll find out SOMETIME how they do with some speed.  But that will be an anecdotal example, and your experience could easily vary.

Precisely. Besides, situations can vary greatly at that speed which will drastically change the amount of damage inflicted on the bike/crash bars. Did the rider low-side around a slick turn at 30mph? Did they violently high-side into a rock wall at 30mph? Did they go over a railroad track at 30mph, get their tire stuck, and get tossed off the bike? Every situation will likely yield a different result which presents a real issue to the people testing these bars at speed. Unfortunately all we can do is manufacture a strong, quality product and test it for basic tip-overs and hope it holds up in a few other situations as well. I know our bathroom bars have been put through a helluva lot over their tenure as law enforcement bars and we took what we learned from designing those bars and incorporated as much as we could into these Canyon Cages. I believe we have come up with a really solid product but we won't know for sure how well they hold up until people start "testing" them in situations other than basic tip-overs.

Ryan, PM sent, I'd only like the front.

Thanks, Chet! I replied to your inquiry asking if you'd like the front and rears or just the front so you can just disregard that message.

Currently there have been 19 orders submitted. Not too bad for only being open for a few days! Hopefully we'll hit the amount we need for the maximum discount, though! If you'd like to check on the total later on, you can always check my first post on the first page of this thread. As orders come in, I update the "current orders" section on my initial post.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not suggesting this to rile Bob up even more or to be sure that we get the max discount (although both would be nice   ;) ). I sincerely don't want the guys who might not know about these bars missing their chance at buying them during the group buy.

I am sure there will be something we can mount. I am starting to look at that option as well.

Foot pegs can definitely be mounted to the bar if you can find 7/8" clamps. I believe RivCo sells them. Otherwise, you may be able to put a rubber grommet around the Canyon Cage itself where you want to mount the pegs and use a 1" clamp. That way, the rubber grommet would allow the clamp to cinch down tight although the bar is only 7/8".

Guys, this is the group buy thread for the Gen 1 Canyon Cages.  From here on out, any post not applicable (my call), will be exterminated.  If you want to discuss other things (have no problem at all with that), start a new thread.  I really appreciate your indulgence in that.  Thanks.

I plan on going with MFW Vario's like I had on the rear, just with clamp mounting like below.  Not cheap but they come in black as well.  Apx 150.00

Or you could get these cheaper, get the idea?

For those of you looking for 7/8" clamps to mount highway pegs, I've found a really nice set available through RivCo:

http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=426&cat=0&page=1 (http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=426&cat=0&page=1)
http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=425&cat=0&page=1 (http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=425&cat=0&page=1)

They also carry some really nice black pegs that work with their clamps:

http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=282&cat=0&page=1 (http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=282&cat=0&page=1)

Here's a few shots of these pegs/clamps mounted on the Canyon Cage. Keep in mind, this is the 1" 2010-2012 Canyon Cage but the set up would look identical on the 2008-2009 Canyon Cage:

Well, we don't charge the credit cards until we're ready to ship the product which will be early August sometime. If you don't want to miss out on the 25% discount, I suggest you place your order and then just cancel it later on if you don't end up selling your bathroom bars in time. Ultimately, it's up to you but that's what I'd do if you're serious about wanting to get the Canyon Cage because the price will jump back up to $275 once the Group Buy is over.

Maybe you should instead ask why the gen 1 folks aren't buying. I'll start. I don't care for the way they look. I think the development process was handicapped by time constraints on the loaner bike which I understand. I also think also think a better looking and possibly better working product could have been developed if the drill option could have been explored. These comments are not a negative criticism of Ryan or MCE who I believe have been one of the most customer oriented companies I have had the pleasure of doing business with. I have the small rear bars from the earlier buy and was hoping for a product that was more to my taste. As always JMHO.

I understand and respect your opinion.  With that in mind for the money these will provide the best protection that I can afford.  The Top Blocks are by far the best looking and would have worked with my pegs (Ronnies) but at 700.00 there was just no way.  I had the GSG sliders and they looked fine but would doubtfully compare in protection.  Projektd, well I just don't like them.  So with all this in mind I decided the Canyons were the best option.  Sure they may have looked better if the plastic was drilled but I think that may have scared more people off.  There is another option in the works but that product is 6 months out and not for me to share at this time.

I think there are a few reasons that the 2008-2009 Canyon Cage won't outsell the Canyon Cage for the 2010-2012 Connie. That's not to say it isn't a great product though. I truly believe it is in both looks and functionality, especially for the price! The 2010-2012 has an extra model year worth of bikes out on the road and possibly two once the 2013 Connie comes out. Aside from that, most people with a 2008-2009 have had their bikes for quite some time so the people who wanted tip-over protection have already purchased a set from another company. Generally, people with the 2010-2012's have purchased their bikes more recently and haven't had as much time to find and/or purchase suitable tip-over protection. This makes the production of the Canyon Cage more opportune for the owners of the newer bikes which is going to lead to more sales.

More than anything, I think we were spoiled by all the time and interaction on the first build.  Who really does that?  After that experience, MC probably just wanted to get this done.   It still beats the hell out of bathroom bars.......:)

I think the biggest reason is that most of us have some sort of protection by now.  I already had the short bars on the back and have the GSG sliders in the center.  I'm going to remove those and get the Canyon Cages, though.

While I certainly do not want to dispute those that stated less of a design time, but inspite of that it would have been impractical to believe that MCE would have sold 2008-2009 bars more than 2010-2012. Even if they come out with a drilled option, that would be a higher risk of not getting the return of investment on the earlier models. This is apart from the fact they had limited availability of a bike. You have to realize that they are in business for profit and have to count their beans. I think they are correct in the assumption that the later model bikes outnumber the earlier model and that a good % of earlier model bikes already have some sort of protection. Some people may not want to toss that investment - unlike Jim. So, considering the constraints, I appreciate that come up with a good design that most people like AND giving us a good discount. Needless to say, it is going to be hard to please everyone.

Thanks, Jim! To me, that really says something about what the community thinks about our new Canyon Cages! People are willing to replace current protection in order to use our guards.  ;D I'd be lying if I said that didn't make me feel good!

It is definitely difficult to please everyone. All you can do is your absolute best and hope people realize and appreciate it. There's always going to be someone out there with something negative to say, unfortunately. I think we've done a good job in listening to the community and creating a product that most of you like and that protects the bike well at a very reasonable cost, especially compared to protection offered by other companies. Thank you for being one of the people who realize and appreciate the hard work we've put in to making a product specifically for YOU guys!

Total newbie blunder, this was posted on the Gen 2 Group Buy thread 'cause I wasn't paying attention. Sigh. Posted it originally on 6/26/12. So now it is here where it should be...

MC Enterprises is just a few miles from where I live so I rode over today and plunked down money for Canyon Cages. Got to meet Ryan, the one who watches and interacts with the forum, sets up these group buys, etc. Also got the cooks tour from Mike, the CEO and janitor. Some interesting equipment in the manufacturing area. I was a machinist and manufacturing engineer for years before I opened up my bicycle shop (don't tell my mom, she still thinks I'm playin' piano down at the cat house). The machine that twists the square stock is a homemade job. The motor started out life as the power to open concrete doors to missile silos and the rest was a threading machine. Several screw machines from the 1940s. A very clean and very big polishing room that was in full swing, hard to keep the walls white in a polishing room but theirs were. Several older bikes in the lobby from the 1960s and 1970s. My favorite was a Kawasaki H2 Mack IV, that one took me back. All in all a very nice facility and a great crew.

Ryan thinks our group buy will reach the 25% discount level. Way to go all you 2008 & 2009 owners.

Ryan also responded and was nice enough not to call me out on being a dummy:

"Thanks for the kind words, slideways! I apologize I didn't have more time to speak with you since I was trying to close out my responsibilities for the day but I'm glad you enjoyed stopping by! Thanks for your order and I hope you enjoy the Canyon Cages once you pick them up!"

I think the reason for the slow orders on Gen1 bars is due to the group buy of the bathroom bars just prior to the canyon cages coming on the scene. The numbers for bathroom bars which Ryan has probably tells the story best.  JP

Awww, man! I would have been able to answer that if this was posted a bit earlier and I was still in the office. If someone else hasn't mounted their bars and can weigh them, that'd be awesome. Otherwise we'll have to wait til Monday when I have a chance to weigh the Canyon Cage and Saddle Bag Guards at work. I want to say the Canyon Cage is probably 12-14lbs total whereas the Saddle Bag Guards are probably 5-7lbs total. These are just my guesstimations, though. I can tell you for sure, though, that the discount does apply to both the front and rear guards if you purchase them during the group buy.

I'm not sure which email was yours as I get quite a few orders via email for a variety of products. I have confirmed all orders sent up until now though so you should have gotten an email back from me. Unfortunately though I don't have the instructions for the Gen. 1 Canyon Cage finished quite yet. If you'd like, I can email a set to you once I get them done.

Thanks for your order!

My bad, Ryan! I meant shipping instructions! I didn't get your confirmation email, so please email me at  autobahntowing at rogers dot com. Order will be for one set of gen.1 Canyon Cages and one set of saddle bag guards, both in black. I would like to pay with PayPal and order will be shipped to location in Pennsylvania and not in Ontario!!!

Hmmm, I was looking in my "sent" folder in my email and it doesn't look like the message sent properly. I'll try resending my email right now. If it doesn't come through, there must be some issue going on. Anyhow, I have received the order and I'll get it put in right now for you. I'll call you when your order is getting ready so you can make your payment via PayPal! Thanks for your order!

Most of the guards will be shipping out late this month (30th-31st) as we're actually a bit ahead of schedule. Those of you who got your orders in towards the end of the Group Buy will most likely see your guards a week or two after that.

If I can't get the "nice price" then I'll just wait a little. Don't really have an extra 5 bills burning a hole but for the cheaper price I would come up with it. Maybe in a few weeks I'll order some.

I can offer you 10% off MSRP for the front and rear sets until the end of July. If you wait, the price is only going to go up. If you're serious about wanting these you may want to get them ordered. If money is a bit tight, you can always just order the front for $247.50 ($275 - 10%) and wait on the rear sets since 10% off the rears is only a discount of about $15. Ultimately it's up to you but the price is only going to go up over time, not down.

Just put the rears on. Took all of 20 minutes including cleaning and trying them with and without the rear foot pegs. The wife never rides on the Concours, but you never know who you might pick up. So I left them on for now. Will get to the Canyon Cage in a week or so. Anyone sell black rear foot pegs?

A couple fresh pics from this morning...

The fronts blend in so well that the rears almost look - - out of place - - kind of too large. But no matter, this is a case of function over form, but lest "form" than the bathroom bars.

I pulled all the plastic off of my bike yesterday in preparation for installing my new Canyon Cages. I got the right side all done and started on the left side. I noticed that as I threaded the new 10mm x 70mm socket head bolt (used in steps 16 & 21 of the supplied instructions) into place that the bolt was very hard to get started. I pulled the bolt out thinking that maybe it was the thread locker that Kawi used that was making it difficult to get started. Not so, the threads on the bolt were not cut properly on the very end of the bolt. I tried cleaning the threads up a bit but I didn't have the proper sized die to do the job. I tried to force the bolt in to place but it started chewing up the threads of the motor mount and I stopped. I pulled the bolt out from the right side and the threads on it were perfect and worked fine on either side of the bike. I had a few choice words to say about the maker of that bolt as I started to put everything back together and remove the Canyon cage from the other side of the bike.

That's my luck sometimes...

I sent Ryan an e-mail asking for a new bolt.

I received mine as well last week. I have not got a chance to even open the box. We are moving and in the transition process. Hopefully, this weekend I get to cut open the box and at least oogle at them.

Question for you - did you guys get the brake recall taken care of before the bar installation? Do not think it should matter, but thought I ask.

Quick noob type question ;D  If I make the notches while the plastic is on the bike will I need to remove the entire fairing for the install?  Not that I can't, but why if I don't need to?

BTW, the raw bars look great, I bet the silver will add another 1.5 HP, which equates about a .1 mph gain at WFO ;)

Nope, you're gonna have to take it all off Chet. Besides, see the notch in the above fairing? No way to make that cut with all the fairing still on the bike.

Opened my box today. The weather here finally turned nice for the first time this summer and should be good all week. I 'll be darned if I am going to take up perfectly good riding time in near perfect weather to put these on....still I would like to have them in place before the MotoGP in Indy the 18th. They look fantastic.....can't wait to get them on.....but when I actually have it apart there are some other things I want to do also ...so I may end up waiting and watching what y'all do with yours first,......

Those two bolts on mine where tight but not THAT tight.

Those two bolts on mine where tight but not THAT tight.

I only had a 3/8 drive with the proper bit.  If I had a 1/2 drive bit I probably would have been fine.  The floor jack handle made very easy to remove.  Also I used snack bags and labeled them so I could keep track of all the different bolts and their locations.  While the panels were off I tightened the header bolts and will change the coolant as well.

Well done with the baggies!

I had a very large piece of cardboard laid out near my bike as I was taking things apart. I set the bolts on the cardboard and wrote myself little notes on the cardboard so that I knew where everything went. I also checked my header bolts but they were all still tight.

I thought about just laying them out like that but between my feet and my dogs I am sure I would have ended up with bolts everywhere.  That;s a great idea if you have the space.  I will just save the bags for next time as well.

+1 on the dogs. I did my work out on the driveway and kept the dogs inside the fence.

Glad to hear you guys are getting the bars on your bikes and you're liking them!

where is the shipping process right now, order rank speaking?

We're actually jumping around a bit due to differing forms of payment and availability. We've shipped all the way up to number 12 save for order number 2 (so don't feel bad, #2 has been waiting longer than everyone else by quite a large margin!). However, we've also shipped some orders into the 20s. We're getting more bars back from our powder coaters later in the week so we should be shipping more sets out soon!

I may have missed the info, lot of threads and posts.

Ryan, it would be helpful to have the torque specs while installing the new hardware.  I read the manual and found some said 17 and others 44.  Hopefully this can be added.  Thanks, great looking product.

I believe the 10mms are 44ft.lbs. and the 8mms are 38ft.lbs. Those were the values given to me by Kawasaki.

The upper forward bolt looks like item 5 (titled subframe bolt) on page 8-2 in the service manual under engine removal.  If that is the case it is a M8 bolt prescribed to be 17 ft/lb which is a huge difference.   When loosening the upper bolt it required FAR less effort, my picture shows what was required to remove the M10 bolt.  The lower bolt is titled item 3, M10 bolt, front engine mounting bolt, and requires 44ft/lbs.   The rear sleeve bolt is item 1, Engine mounting nuts, M12, 44 ft/lbs.  If this is correct I over I torqued the uppers to 38 yesterday and hopefully that is fine.  Anyone else with a service manual?

I think this states the same:  http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=8239.msg99781#msg99781 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=8239.msg99781#msg99781)

I did my Canyon Cage install yesterday and it went off without a hitch, mostly. Words to the wise, remember to plug your turn signals back in before you reinstall the plastic, on BOTH sides.  :o

The step nut on mine looks the same as the others. This isn't to say that there isn't plenty of threads making contact with the threaded bolt, there is since this is a step nut and most of the threads are inside of the CC mounting tab. I think that I might look for a black plastic cap to fit inside of that thing.

In looking at how the front and rear bars look together on the bike...

I wish that the rear bars could have been bent, or swept back, a bit to follow the lines of the bike a little better. Maybe just enough to still allow the bags to be opened. I think that it would have been a big improvement.

Yeah, and if they swept up as well as back, and then swept forward and down again, they could be used as a saddlebag retention system.

I received mine (the front set) this week and they are an outstanding product in my opinion. Well made, excellent actually, and very well finished as well. Also an excellent value as there is a fair amount of labor and fabrication in making these.

Note to self and others while the plastic is off:

Change coolant BEFORE adding bars.  Manageable taking off reservoir with bars but easier w/o them on
Replace clutch fluid BEFORE adding bars and plastic
Tighten header bolts too

Inside the deflector itself should be an extra bolt which is used to replace the longer bolt if I recall correctly.

Some of the early '08s had the 'extra' bolt stuck inside the deflector, mine did not.

Alexx,

I picked up some stainless bolts to use with the deflectors off, I don't remember the details of the size. I never use the deflectors anymore. I like it better with them off.

Can't say I've ever found any extra bolts on my '09. I've found a couple missing but never any missing. Thanks to you and Alpha for the input. I'm currently doing some airflow experiments (trial & error mostly) and some of the results look promising. I thought this would be a good mod to try.

Why?  Do you have a gen1?  (You need to change your signature to indicate which year bike you have!)  Did it turn out they (Ronnie's pegs) are not compatible with the Gen1 canyons?  On my Gen2, I have both installed and wouldn't have it any other way.... the cages are way too far apart and wide, to me, to have pegs on them...

Only downside I have found on the Canyons for the Gen1, really loved my Ronnies and hated to let them go.  They were a great clean and functional install.  Ironically Ronnie has a set of tip over bars that will work with his highway pegs in the pipeline but he is several months out.

As for notching the fairings....a dremmel makes real quick work of it. Just be sure both tabs engage and mark appropriately before cutting

Could you explain this procedure a bit further? What tabs are you referring to? This is my first time with the fairings off. Is it pretty much the same on both sides?
Thanks!

On the Gen 1 bikes all you have to do is to make a notch exactly like the one pictured below (on both sides of course). Then you can install your bars with all the plastic removed and then reinstall the plastic. The notch slips over the top bar of the Canyon cage.

The tabs are inside of the front fairing and that's what holds the 'fins' of the fairing in place.

I just cut the entire vertical piece between the two fins out. The way I saw it once you cut it all possibility of support for the fins is gone. So why not clear the entire path for the cages. And of course it does make removing the plastic with the cages on real easy.

If you cut it as pictured above that lil bit left between the fins will engage the tab inside of the front fairing and support the top fin better. Without that lil bit there's nothing holding onto that fin. Do it however you want, it's your bike.

Exactly what I did, just enough so top still engages the tab as well as bottom.

Notching was definitely the way to go. Was easy to install the cages myself without having to worry about the fairing pieces getting in the way(or getting damaged by a swinging ratchet). I fit the two fairing pieces together on the floor, and marked where the tab ended. I then made quick work of the cut with a hacksaw - about 3 swipes and through.

Gotta admit I missed the fact that there was a tab to engage on the front fair fairing. Now I know. There's that 20-20 hindsight I'm so used to using.  :D

I must say Freds DVD set really made things easier than they would have been.  Lots of good tips and info on them.

Speaking of Ryan, haven't heard anything from him lately.  Wonder if he's wound up in the Kwak PD bike recall?

Got my bars a few days ago and went to put them on today, but realized  my cruise control module is in the way. Have to move things around a bit. The bars do look like a nice product, well built.

I'm still lurking around! I've just been super busy getting other parts designed for some other bikes so I haven't been spending as much time on these forums as when we were building the Connie bars. Anyway, I wanted to ask you about this PD bike recall, I didn't hear about that! There was a Kawi recall on the police bikes?!

Good luck.  Still haven't attached mine yet.  Waiting for better weather at the moment.  I hate being cold.

Has anyone fitted Cayon Cages to a lowered Gen1?  Mine`s lowered by 2cm (1inch).
How are they for ground clearance when lent over cornering?
