Title: What's She Worth?
Post by: Summit670 on February 18, 2012, 05:08:52 PM
Went to look at a 2008 today, 5000 miles so they say, probably true.  Battery was dead so couldn't verify.  ABS.
I'm estimating prices, using Ron Ayers, etc, but the tires I suppose could be off by $100 either way and I didn't include $ for shop to mount/balance.
Tires - need replacement soon - $410
Right foot peg missing - $45
Right mirror broke where it pivots - $180
Battery - $100
Key Fob - one may be missing - $200
Tank key - one may be missing - $60
Luggage key - one may be missing - $30

Bike does have these extras - Cee Bailey windscreen, Cee Baily headlight covers, Kawasaki trunk/pad, handlebar riser.

Brake pads look good.  Saddlebag ridges are scuffed down a little on both sides like paint is gone but not bad, top of bags on outside look scuff-free.  The big OEM muffler has a small scrape by the passenger peg but not much and I'd be replacing that anyhow with aftermarket muffler.

I was told the bike mirror got broke hitting a doorway.  To me it looks like bike fell over on right side and broke drivers peg off, scratched the muffler but the end of the handlebar and lever are scratch free so who knows.

I know it sounds like bike is in rough shape, but really, other than these things, it looks very clean.

What do you think it is worth?  I didn't make an offer yet.

Most, in good shape, are going in the 6's and low 7's. 5K seems a bit low, but I would try it. One went here a while ago for $5800. Accessories are worth nothing. Here in BC some are asking 9-10K. What a joke! Someone wanted to give me that I would jump all over it and get a 10 or 11.

I bought my 08 (Non-ABS) with 4600 miles last May.  Had a new front tire and a tall Kawi wind screen, tank bag, and battery tender.  It too had been dropped, a likely reason for the scrapes and damage.  We all know how these bikes can be tough on newbie’s.  I paid $6500 but based upon your description I agree with 5500 to 5000.  Too many reasons to buy a new bike with the improvements they did to the new ones.  If the tires are gone, good one's will set you back $325 plus mounting and the peg is small stuff but check to see if the mount is damaged, that would add up fast.  If you but it and don't want the trunk, PM me.  I'm looking for one.

I wonder what people would think they are worth if you they were the seller and not the buyer.

I have not followed resale on them recently, but I think $6k would be very fair.

Fair price is whatever both the seller and buyer agree upon.  When I go shopping, I am not looking to pay a fair price.  I am looking to pay the lowest the seller is willing to let go - be it a dealer or private owner.  I have paid less than trade in value for a late model bike that the owner/seller was perfectly happy to see gone.  And I have also paid middle of NADAguides retail price at a brick-n-mortar dealer.

There is no one fair price.  All depend on the seller's circumstance and the buyer's patience/timeline.

I always get nervous when a seller could invest a thousand on something and sell it for 2k more. If its so good, and so easy, who would not do it?

In a situation like that, you have to lowball to make the risk worthwhile.

The advertised price is like $8400.  It has been for sale since at least Nov when I first saw it. I spoke to the previous owner prior to looking at it and he said it was perfect when traded in so I believe it fell over at the dealer.  Now this is a car dealer mind you, so it is not surprising it isn't fixed.  They don't know anything about bikes nor did the salesman I spoke with realize all the issues or even know if there was an extra FOB, etc.

I've been watching cycletrader, craigs, local ads, and it seems like $7500-9500 is the general market within 400 miles of here, with about 10k miles and I assume ready to ride with good tire tread.

Thanks for the input, I'll search a little more and may make a lowball offer.

BTW - does this bike have traction control and can the abs and traction control be turned off with a button or something?
Also, does the 2008 have the option to select Econ Mode for performance?

It only has ABS on a 2008. I don't believe you can turn it off.

Something doesn't smell right, here. $8500 for a bike that has obviously been dropped? Broken footpeg, scraped up bag, and snapped off mirror confirm a relatively good hit. I dropped mine in a low speed left-hander after hittling some diesel fuel a couple of years ago and didn't lose my mirror, though it was seriously scraped. No clutch lever damage either.

I believe there are plenty of low-mileage, excellent condition C-14's in the price range mentioned above.

2008 bikes with ABS do not have traction control, and there is no on-off switch for the ABS. No select mode for Econ, etc. either.

In the midwest (and I'm sure everywhere) there seems to be a lot of these.  ('08 and '09 bikes)

But they have definetly dropped some value as the '10+ bikes came out with updates.

I agree, I can't see a peg coming off by simply dropping the bike. I haven't seen them coming off in accidents I have seen other have. There are plently of bikes out there that have been taken better care of, I'd pass and find something else.

Can you post some pics of the damaged bike?  I would love to see what a dropped/lowsided C14 with an $8400 price tag looks like.  If I was the one making an offer I would tell the salesman that I would offer half of his asking price.  If they don't want to budge then I would move on.
