Technically it wasn't the Iridium.  It was the big rock it was buried in that supposedly did the damage.

According to the FAQ the big rock was "composed almost entirely of the precious metal Iridium".

Yeah, right.  I don't believe that for a minute.  I guess we'll have to wait for the next one to be sure... ;)
