I believe that the base is Dyess.  C-130J Super Hercules from the 317th ANG doing the Elephant walk.

How is this airplane still flying? Notice the right aileron in the up position but still hard to believe it has enough control authority to keep the airplane from rolling over. I'm guessing he didn't land on the deck but flew back to a friendly ship to bail out next to it. Gotta love the Grumman "Iron Works". I know this Avenger could have been built by another contractor but it was Grumman who designed it.

A tail I can understand because the fundamental balance of lift and center of gravity isn't compromised too much. But the lift on that Avenger is way non-symmetrical.

Oh yea, I remember that story. With enough thrust, anything can be made to fly I guess. I'm shocked they didn't just punch out.

I never knew they built a 747 air tanker. I'm guess this was a prototype for a Boing bid when the USAF bought the KC-10. But just a guess.

The KC-33A was proposed, just as stated when the KC-10 bidding was being let.
The Air Force, it its infinite wisdom went with the KC-10.
Iran bought four of the KC-33s for use with their F-4s but it is not known if they are still serviceable as tankers.

I had a buddy that was a P3 instructor pilot that went over to Iran in the Shah days to train Iranian pilots. He said none of the candidates could safely be signed off. The were told to sign them off anyway. So on the last day, right before leaving the country, they signed off the pilots but he was never sure if any of the P3's flew again.

So while playing ADV tag this week, a pal posted a pic from a HUGE collection of old war birds....
I'm fighting a cold, so I didn't run to the tag site yet, hopefully I can grab it tomorrow....
Its only 20 minutes from my house, and I had heard about it years ago, but never could find where it was, they kept it hush hush to keep hoards of pickers from converging on it.....

I'll go in the morn, and shoot pics....
Here is a story written by the son of the fellow that owned the collection ( now deceased).
http://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/the-soplata-airplane-sanctuary-22000009/

Its such a huge collection I could find it using bing sattelite photos in the area... and clearly can see all the planes that still exist there...
Awesome stuff...
