So many awesome aircraft, so little money... For personal transportation I've always loved the Lanceair. Flew into Gilespie airport on Sunday for breakfast and found this parked next to the Cessna 172 when we finished.  This Lanceair Evolution turbine will cruise at 300 knots true.

Quite a few things, actually...including single malt Scotch (family, friends, beer, steaks, breakfast, lunch, dinner, more beer, England, aircraft, these forums, motorcycles...) quite a long list.

Hmmm, seems I might have missed an opportunity. But alas, wouldn't even know how to start a turbine never mind fly one safely.

Flies like any other plane ;) , just has some weird levers and placards.

Check turbine oil, kick the tires.
Most modern turboprops have an automated start sequence, basically hit the start button.
Prop fine pitch (or feathered, read POH), fuel lever off, power at idle.
Hit the start and ignitor (if equipped) switches.
When RPM ~700 RPM, fuel lever to on.
When RPM ~1200 RPM, release starter and ignitor (if equipped) switches. Watch for 'hot' start on the ITT or TIT gauges (rarely happens). Shut the fuel off if overheat, and BAIL!
Go fly.

See? I didn't know any of that. Also you have got to nail the power setting on landing as getting behind the power curve could ruin your whole day.

Guess I'm middle of the road. I should have a Vne of 205, once I test for that.

Good question. I hope its not: put it in a dive, accelerate until flutter breaks something off, note the indicated air speed, mark as VNE.

Didn't Nat Puffer or some test pilot do that testing for you?

Not that I'm aware. Minor differences in airfoil shapes... and ours are all different... even if by only a hair...
Nat did deep stall testing (sort of). The main wings stalls *before* the canard, it's generally not recoverable. But it's not a lawn dart event either. Nat set up a trolly in his plane with a moveable weight. If at aft CG, and he detected an impending deep stall, he could shift the weight forward. Don't think he ever found his planes limit for aft CG, he may have chickened out before it happened.

Sad news this morning. Just read about the passing of Bob Hoover. I saw him fly a couple of times. He was poetry in motion. Beyond being arguably the best pilot on earth, he was also an amazing human being. I love the story of how he lost engines on take off and landed off airport due to the line boy putting the wrong fuel in his airplane. When he returned to the airport the kid was crying and apologizing. Bob's response was as pilot in command it was my responsibility to make sure the aircraft was ready for flight. Any time I come back here I'm going to insist that you are the only person I will let fuel my airplanes as I know you will never make that mistake again.

Wow, this is sad news indeed. Amazing, legendary pilot, saw him fly many, many times - no one could ever fly like he could. He has an excellent autobiography ("Forever Flying") that is a must read.

A10 (Tankbuster/Warthogs) were temporarily seen flying over this area a couple of months ago, they are amazing  8) 

They have now moved back to their permanent base and left us with the sight of Typhoons and Chinooks etc  8)

Quite accurate :)

I saw 160 knots indicated airspeed today, or about 180 knots true airspeed (~205 MPH GPS ground speed), in a gentle decent. No indication of flutter.

I look forward to the day when I can fly a passenger (like say a voluntary motor-scooter driver who has no idea what they're getting into) up in an experimental plastic aeroplane that a knuckle dragger built in his basement for a 'low pass' at 200+ MPH :)
