Brian, I thought they were getting ready for some roadskull too!!!  LOL
The guy is obviously talented and practiced to the point where he can control the bike with confidence.

That being said, I’ve seen too many fatals when showing off goes very, very badly.  We had this guy doing a 100mph+ wheelie on his ‘Busa drift of a county road and sheer off a power pole at its base.  Of course, his club erected a monument to the last, most stupid thing he ever did...

They are "dressed" with sleeveless T-shirts, torn cotton pants, and tennis shoes.  I can't think of anything more stupid.

Why does it not surprise me they are dressed almost as stupidly.   Why not just wear shorts and flip-flops too?  Or perhaps naked, since it looks like that is what they were going to do anyway.

Yeah, I thought I was on the wrong forum for a minute.  ;D

And that was my point regarding it being cool: something can be stupid and highly skilled, and well- executed at the same time. And I have no trouble acknowledging both things at the same time... it is stupid AND cool. :-)

Sorta' like mountain climbing into the 'death zone' (above 25,000 feet, where mammals cannot survive); I have all the respect in the world for the physical condition, the mental tanacity and overall skills while at the same time fully acknowledging it is simply a stupid thing to do. Not as stupid as free- climbing, which I have zero respect for but still, pretty stupid to go to a place where one cannot live. Duh. And Bravo!

And a lot of us do / have done some stupid but maybe cool things as well. And in my own personal experience, those who never have done anything on the dumb side are frankly a little boring and have a stick up their.... well, you know. I am not encouraging bad behavior, just pointing out that the world is a big place and there is a huge range of behavior and a lot of it overlaps different areas all at the same time. Personally, I really like the stupid / cool method of tire seating using ether and a match but hey, fun is where one finds it.

I have a hard time seeing past the stupidity.  Although what they are doing is technically very interesting, it is so incredibly irresponsible, to themselves and everyone else on the road, (and people in nearby houses having to listen to it, too) that it just makes me angry.

Now get off my lawn!

Yeah, I know. But you and I are fundamentally different and so that is no doubt the difference between our opinions of the save event.

Myself, I would rather not have the entire world follow all of the rules, all of the time. It would be too boring. Now please understand I am not advocating mass- murder, global nuclear war or anything, just that some of those people out there on the fringes make the whole experience (life) more interesting, at least for me. An entire community (read: country, section of the planet, whatever) marching along, in- step, would be a bit too pedestrian for me. I like some of that 'Hey Bubba', hold my beer and watch this!' stuff. I actually like watching people inflate tires and seat the beads with ether and a match- I would not have thought of it, I am surprised it works, and in the end, it seems to work pretty well. Not saying everyone should sell all tire mounting equipment and use ether, just that it makes a more interesting world, at least to me, to see the envelope pushed a little bit.

What that kid and the girl did on that bike was stupid, and I would give one of my own kids a 'cuff' for doing it but still, it DOES show a good deal of skill and ability. All part of the big cosmic mix from where I sit.....

I'm agreeing with Max on this, it was totally stupid and gives the rest of the MC community a bad name.  Why not do it on an exhibition basis in a controlled area rather than a public road pissing off the rest of the people off on it?  The skill of the guy is totally non-important as the bystanders are thinking what a jackass.

Had they worn proper safety gear, and did this on a closed course where they didn't threaten other people's lives or annoy everyone or further the negative stereotype of MC riders, I wouldn't mind a bit.  I would still think they were crazy, though :)

Kind of like the YouTube videos of ghost rider over in Europe. I can appreciate the skill it takes to be able to ride like he does, but why do it on public roads? He would be a natural on a course like the Isle of Mann TT.

Well, not all the by-standers; some of them think 'Hey, that is a very skilled, able jackass over there'.

 ;) ;D

I would not try the 'ether tire bead setting' method either but I would certainly pull up a chair and watch someone else do it.

Besides all that, most of us consume alcohol and that, as far as I can see, is a 100% stupid move. It has absolutely no benefit whatsoever and yet certain has downsides, some of them severe. So to put a label on it, the consumption of alcohol is just foolish and without merit. But regardless of the social value it certainly does provide a significant amusement factor (not drunk driving of course but drunk walking, drunk talking and sometimes, just 'drunk trying to maintain vertical placement'). Should anyone not believe this, I present the 'World's drunkest man goes for more beer' cleverly interlaced with the theme from the movie 2001: A space oddity....   :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Now that second video is truly impressive. I had not seen a recovery before- all the para-gliders I have seen in the past set down on some part of Mother Earth, sometimes in a big stack of cardboard boxes. But that 'back into the plane' shtick was really outstanding IMO.

And yet somehow, I doubt the FAA would have accepted that flight plan in the first place.  ;)

I've said this for a number of years now, people are getting more and more stupid.

Poison control calls 'spike' due to online laundry pod challenge

http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/17/health/tide-laundry-pod-challenge-poison-control/index.html (http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/17/health/tide-laundry-pod-challenge-poison-control/index.html)

It used to be that washing your kid's mouth out with soap was seen as a punishment. Now, authorities are trying to keep teens from doing just that.

Teens have been increasingly biting into laundry pods, with some posting the videos online as part of a "challenge," according to a statement Tuesday by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. The results can be potentially harmful or even deadly.

In the first 15 days of the new year, poison control centers received 39 such calls -- the same number they received in all of 2016, the association said.

In videos posted on YouTube and social media, people gag, cough and sometimes begin foaming at the mouth after biting into laundry pods.

"The 'laundry packet challenge' is neither funny nor without serious health implications," Stephen Kaminski, the association's CEO and executive director, said in a statement Tuesday. "We have seen a large spike in single-load laundry packet exposures among teenagers since these videos have been uploaded."

Poison control centers have handled over 50,000 calls about laundry packets over the past five years, the vast majority being accidents involving kids younger than 5 years old. But 13- to 19-year-olds have been responsible for more than 130 intentional exposures since 2016, according to the association.

The laundry pods, which contain brightly colored detergent packaged in a clear film, dissolve easily in water. But they can also release their toxic ingredients when they come into contact with saliva or wet hands, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

"The liquid detergent in the pods is not the same as regular liquid detergent. It has a higher concentration of surfactants, chemicals that are responsible for stain removal," Eric J. Moorhead, president and principal scientist of Good Chemistry LLC, previously told CNN.

In the past, children have been hospitalized with difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and temporary vision loss due to chemical burns to the eye, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In 2015, laundry packets were the third most common cause of unintentional poisoning in children under 5, behind acetaminophen and blood pressure medication.

The ingredients in laundry pods might also cause seizures, fluid in the lungs, respiratory arrest, coma or death, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
"The intentional misuse of these products poses a real threat to the health of individuals," Kaminski said.

Tide warns consumers on packaging that the laundry pods can be harmful if put in the mouth or eyes.

In a statement from Tide's parent company, Procter & Gamble, representative Petra Renck wrote, "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of people who use our products. We are deeply concerned about conversations related to intentional and improper use of liquid laundry pacs and have been working with leading social media networks to remove harmful content that is not consistent with their policies."

The company has released its own messages on social media, saying that the pods should be used for doing laundry -- and nothing else.

The laundry pods' colorful design has come under some criticism for their gelatinous, dessert-like appearance.

"What they need to do now is first of all, take these things off the shelves, and ... put them back in a way that does not look edible, appetizing, exciting or anything else," branding expert Bruce Turkel, CEO of Turkel Brands, told CNN's Richard Quest on Monday.

"You want to have a real challenge?" Turkel asked. "Get teenagers to do their own laundry."

Remember back when you were growing up and you did something stupid just because your friends did it? Your mom would ask you, "if your friends jumped off of a bridge would you do the same?"

It's seems that teens these day will jump off the damn bridge, as long as their friends are posting vids of it online that is.  :o

More of the same...

Tennessee teen allegedly shot in head during internet challenge, officials say

A new internet fad is reportedly responsible for a shooting in Tennessee that critically injured a teen and led to an arrest.

Sherman Lackland, 21, was at E’s 24 Hour Cafe in Memphis on Thursday morning when he and two others were playing the “No Lackin Challenge,” according to Fox 19, citing a police affidavit.

The game, according to the document, is when “people get into fake arguments” and draw their guns at one another.

But Thursday’s incident ran afoul when Lackland allegedly fired his handgun by accident, shooting his 17-year-old friend in the right side of his head, according to the affidavit. Police said the teen was brought to the hospital in critical condition and was eventually “downgraded to extremely critical.”

Lackland reportedly did not have a carry permit for the weapon.

A witness on the scene recalled hearing the gun go off and said Lackland was emotional, Fox 19 reported.

"A real loud bang, then I see the guy across from him fall in the floor,” Thomas Fitzpatrick, who was at the restaurant at the time, said. "He started grabbing him and telling him to get up and then he was kind of mad and was swinging stools and stuff.”

Lackland was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.

Challenge-type games have long been fueled by internet exposure. One of the most recent and more highly publicized has been the Tide pod challenge. Videos on social media are showing kids biting into brightly colored liquid laundry detergent packets. Or cooking them, ingesting them and spitting up soap.

According to The Washington Post, last year U.S. poison control centers received reports of more than 10,500 children younger than 5 who were exposed to the capsules. The same year, nearly 220 teens were reportedly exposed, and about 25 percent of those cases were intentional, the paper said, citing data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

The Post's article, published earlier this month, said that there have been close to 40 reported cases among teenagers so far in 2018 — half of them intentional.

I find the whole Tide capsule thing interesting. I wonder if swallowing one of those with, say, a pair of socks would result in clean socks? Might be a great way to 'rinse out a few things' when traveling and such. It could even be a little public service; out to dinner with friends and someone spills something on his tie? No problem- I can 'freshen' that right up for you.....

More news about the stupidity of the current crop of social media idiots.

There you go, fry those Tide pods up in a pan and get em nice a melty before you eat em.

Mom and dad will wonder where all of their (relatively) expensive pods have gone. You know that these teens aren't buying those pods themselves.

Man steals car, then calls owner for help starting it, police say

(http://a57.foxnews.com/images.foxnews.com/content/fox-news/us/2018/02/10/man-steals-car-then-calls-owner-for-help-starting-it-police-say/_jcr_content/par/featured_image/media-0.img.jpg/931/524/1518240428552.jpg?ve=1&tl=1&text=big-top-image)

A Minnesota man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a car from a Walmart parking lot, then calling the owner less than two hours later for help starting the vehicle.

Edward Leroy Wilson, 37, is suspected of sneaking into the car after its owner turned it on remotely from within the Sartell, Minn., store, the St. Cloud Times reported.

The woman who owns the vehicle apparently wanted to warm it up Monday night in frigid evening temperatures, but by the time she went to the parking lot, the car was gone.
Police say Wilson had driven the vehicle more than an hour away, but ran into trouble restarting the car after he had parked it.

About 10:30 p.m. -- less than two hours after surveillance images showed the car leaving the lot --  the owner received a call from a woman who told her that a man was asking questions about the vehicle, the St. Cloud Times reported.

Wilson, who gave a fake name, then spoke to the owner directly, and asked if she could find someone to start the car for him, police said.

Officers responding to a suspicious person call identified Wilson and the stolen vehicle during Wilson's conversation with the owner, according to local reports, and took Wilson into custody.
He reportedly admitted to the crime and told officers "he knew it was not a good idea to get the vehicle," according to a criminal complaint filed against him.

Pretty crazy!

Must be some improperly installed after-market remote starter.  Properly designed/installed ones will kill the engine the moment the car is moved if the key is not present.

She probably didn't lock the doors either  ::)

Pretty crazy!

Must be some improperly installed after-market remote starter.  Properly designed/installed ones will kill the engine the moment the car is moved if the key is not present.

She probably didn't lock the doors either  ::)

My truck won’t even shift out of park if the engine is running and the key is out of the ignition, and you can’t get in it without key fob or breaking out a window!

What is more amazing is that they can't tell when a car is running???  They shouldn't be driving in the first place.

I read them as well. Like Conrad, for car or motorcycle, I read the owners manual cover to cover. Although lately I do this on line because I can make the text larger. But just about everything else, appliances, whatever, I only read the manual if there is a problem.

How a McDonald's receipt crippled an elite drug-fighting team

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/how-a-mcdonalds-receipt-crippled-an-elite-drug-fighting-team/ar-AAyPxc6?li=BBnb7Kz (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/how-a-mcdonalds-receipt-crippled-an-elite-drug-fighting-team/ar-AAyPxc6?li=BBnb7Kz)

Narcotics Detective Kyle Willett made the 10-minute drive to a McDonald's drive-thru for sweet tea and cheeseburgers before returning to work — and doing something no one expected.
Alone in his white Chevrolet Tahoe — outside the UPS global shipping hub where he worked with an elite task force to intercept drug shipments — Willett tore the packing tape off a box, pried open a metal safe and stole piles of cash totaling about $40,000.

But the Louisville Metro Police veteran, well trained in exposing criminals' missteps, made an elementary mistake of his own.

He used his credit card for the $4.76 McDonald's meal and then forgot to remove the receipt from the fast-food bag he crumpled and stuffed inside the box before sending the package on its path to Oakland, California.

Willett didn't know that a West Coast drug interdiction task force anxiously awaited its delivery. A judge had already signed a search warrant to allow investigators to open the package, as it was expected to contain valuable evidence.

The box should have helped investigators snag a drug trafficker. Instead, it netted a cop. It also exposed questionable practices by two other detectives and for 19 months sidelined a task force charged with interrupting a major drug pipeline during the nation's worst drug crisis — blamed for more than 400 deaths in Louisville last year.

"We were missing a lot of drugs with this task force not up and running," said Russell Coleman, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

Many narcotics detectives trusted Willett.

Lauded as one of Louisville Metro Police's most accomplished detectives, Willett was once featured on the true crime TV show "The First 48," discussing key evidence seized in a double homicide.
And sometimes when the task force supervisor couldn't be on site, he was left in charge.

But in June 2016, the phone rang at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. California police were on the other line with details about how their drug investigation hit a snag when the $40,000 in cash, their evidence, was stolen.

Investigators in Louisville tracked the last four digits of the credit card printed on the McDonald's receipt to Willett. And a restaurant security camera showed his white Tahoe, bought by the police department, pulling out of the drive-thru at the same time printed on the receipt.

Federal agents hid surveillance cameras inside Willett's SUV that August and began watching the task force's movements at UPS Worldport. The next time Willett stole cash from a box — and there was a next time — it was captured on video.

The felony theft case against Willett was mounting as the FBI and Louisville police's Public Integrity Unit teamed up to investigate.

The probe into one man's actions soon spread to an inspection of an entire task force charged with keeping drugs off the streets.

The team had worked hard to earn a coveted federal designation in the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, which provides money, training and resources to those policing the most saturated areas. It united five members from LMPD, one from Kentucky State Police, three from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and one part-time agent from Homeland Security Investigations.

They hunted for drugs in packages flown through UPS, Fed-Ex and the United States Postal Service — intercepting many poisons in 2016, including 50 pounds of heroin — about a day's supply for 22,500 addicts. They also found 197 pounds of cocaine and 190 pounds of meth.

But a neighbor, who was a house- painter, was doing the peak of a Cape Cod house one day and his extension ladder was not long enough. But he DID have a 12' or so step- ladder so...... well you get the idea. But it was surprising to him, after he climbed the step ladder and then up onto the extension ladder, made it to the top with a brush and a bucket of paint that the extension ladder slipped off the step ladder. Who woulda' thunk it? Anyway, fortunately the Earth was there to break his fall, as well as his pelvis and numerous other bones. Some time later, when he was able to again work, he went to the jobsite and had to spend a couple of days scraping dry paint off the trim and the windows..... and then of course finish painting the house. I do not know what he used for a ladder that time because I told him I did not want to know and to please NOT tell me.

One year it snowed over 30 inches deep when we lived in western MD.  Cleaned off the snow on the driveway and the walkway.  Thought it would be a good idea to clean the snow off the roof.  No problem.  I'll wrap sandpaper around my boots to give me traction and just clean a bit off from the ground to get me a solid footing on the roof.  Climbed up the ladder and got both feet planted on the roof.  I think I was standing up less than a second before I fell.  From the inside (according to the wife and kids laughing hysterically) it looked like a scene out of Married with Children with Al falling off the roof as seen through a window.  Thank goodness for the snow pile I made with the snow blower.   :loco:

You mean paying for sex is illegal?    :o

DeKALB – A man who reported to police a “woman” he paid to have sex with him never showed up has been charged with solicitation of a sexual act.

Peter N. Coleman, 52, of the 600 block of North Annie Glidden Road, could face up to a year in jail if he’s convicted.

Police said in court records that Coleman reported that he paid “Kayrene” $40 via Paypal to have sex with him, but she never showed, so he wanted the company to refund his money.

According to the records, Coleman showed officers the exchange of messages with “Kayrene” indicating he wanted back his $40, which he’d paid her for gas, and that she never came for the other $50.

“Kayrene” told Coleman in a message that there would be a refund charge, at which point he urged her to just go to his house to have sex.

Coleman claims that because he did not, in fact, receive the woman’s services, he didn’t think he’d get into trouble.
Coleman was arrested Tuesday and posted $150 bail to be released, and is due back in court at 9 a.m. Dec. 20.

https://www.foxnews.com/health/company-sells-80-used-tissues-so-people-can-get-sick-when-they-want (https://www.foxnews.com/health/company-sells-80-used-tissues-so-people-can-get-sick-when-they-want)

Company sells $80 used tissues so people can 'choose' when to get sick

A company which sells used tissues in an effort to allow consumers to decide when they get sick has reportedly been sold out online for months.

The tissues, created by company Vaev and sold online for a steep $79.99, will help people "prepare for the flu season and feeling clear all year round," according to the company website.

"We believe that when flu season comes around, you should be able to get sick on your terms," the Los Angeles-based company states online. "We believe using a tissue that carries a human sneeze is safer than needles or pills."

The company states the tissue is "specially treated with organic ingredients, is non-prescription, and works hand in hand with the human body to keep your immune system feeling like your immune system."

Oliver Niessen, the company's 34-year-old founder, told TIME that the idea behind the product is to "choose" when you get sick, rather than deal with it when it naturally comes.

“That kind of freedom, that kind of luxury to choose — I mean, we customize everything in our lives and we have everything the way that we want it, so why not approach sickness that way as well?” he said.

Most customers who purchase the used tissues are "young parents and people in their 20s" who are skeptical of vaccines and seeking "alternatives," according to Niessen.

However, there are no vaccines to combat the common cold. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to protect yourself from the symptoms of a cold — sore throat, runny nose, sneezing and coughing — is to wash your hands often, to stay away from others who are sick, and to avoid touching facial orifices where germs can enter the body.

as horrible as it sounds, when I was a very young child, and one of us kids in the neighborhood got a "general" illness, like measles, chicken pox, mumps,(not just colds and influenza), things that today aren't seen like what was common in the 50's and 60's... our mothers would arrange a "party", a dozen or so kids, along with brothers and sisters, would all become "immunized by proxy" while eating cake, drinking soda pop, sharing handfulls of Cracker-Jack and Peanuts, and sharing ropes of licorice,  and candy...
This was VERY common, nobody will admit to it, but Mom's were pretty smart...
Getting all the kids at one time actually helped prevent the long lingering re-infections that would ruin a complete summer, being passed slowly between us goobers.
This was done at a time, way back, when a Doctor would actually know your name, and he would "pack up his black doctor bag" and show up on your porch, and help you... and in return, Momma would hand him $10, and an apple pie, and he would smile and go back to his office on the corner...
I know it sounds totally crazy, but just because i decided to share that, I went and looked around... seems it actually was a pretty well and diverse spread of this occurring.. mind you, my experiences were from 1960-1965...
but it seems to have been regularly done... I guess my Mom was a trendsetter..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pox_party

Immunizations as we know them today, were not common place way back.
Doctors like mine, tried to stay on the cutting edge of discovery, and anytime a vaccine was developed, he would make a point of calling, and having us come in... he cared about children, and their health..It had nothing to do with $, that was the least of his cares, he would see every kid in my neighborhood, black, white, Asian, Oriental, didn't matter, and if you didn't have $ he would say pay me when you can... and never bat an eye about giving. He would also make it a point, to attend every one of those "parties", which I assume he actually suggested at that time period, and physically check each and every kid, and know which ones were to be watched closely (and made sure to tell those parents what to watch for, and if something changes to get him there a.s.a.p.), or which ones seemed to have more resistance to "the bug",

Luckily, the Salk and Sabin vaccines were developed at this very time, so we got that protection from the get go... Massive immunizations took place here in my home town, as we were the largest city in Ohio, and adjacent to Pittsburgh where the first vaccines were administered.
My brother is older than me, and unfortunately he actually got Polio in his teens, he recovered very well, and did not suffer from related issues unlike many kids back then.
I worry today, that as we consider that disease completely non existent today, it could resurface, and as we no longer immunize for it, things could get out of hand..
I think I have one of these posters somewhere, and one from the times we went and ate a sugar cube each week... for a month.

This one starts off 'way cool' until being badly executed......

https://news.yahoo.com/polar-vortex-psa-throw-boiling-175513672.html

So it is really cold in parts of the US- unusually cold even for areas that often see very cold temperatures. During any type of odd weather pattern such as this, it is really pretty normal to try some unusual things that only work when the weather is extreme, and tossing hot (or boiling) water into the air to watch it freeze is way up on the list. And pretty cool too- I frankly admit if temps. were low enough here, I would be the first one outside with hot (or boiling) water and tossing it into the air, onto the side of buildings, etc., etc. just to watch how extreme the behavior is. But extreme temperatures are not an automatic 'pass' for extreme idiocy and pouring hot or boiling water onto any mammal, especially a non- furred (Easy Boys- mostly non- furred), thin skinned ones such as humans. I mean really people! What is even worse is that we need a Public Service Announcement about this..... isn't the pain and suffering enough of a lesson?

Darwinism at it's finest..
we did this in elementary school, and the teacher was smart enough to say.."when you hold the pan, pay attention to where the steam i going first, and throw it in THAT direction..." nobody showed up at school the next day with burns...
but we all had something to share..

just this week, we had -6 with 30 mph winds, and I just had to do it again...

it was pretty clear WHICH direction to throw it..... and brought back a fond memory.

pouring it over your head, and throwing it into the air, differ greatly... thanks to youtube, we can elect new candidates for the Darwin award...

Yeah, the 'throwing of hot water' is not inherently dangerous, any more so than shooting, driving, riding motorcycles, using chainsaws, etc., etc. but it IS rather unforgiving, just like all of the aforementioned. It is not that no one should do such a thing, it is just that doing it badly or incorrectly has a price that a person may not be willing to pay.....

doing anything seen on youtube has that propensity for going awry...

"It is not that no one should do such a thing, it is just that doing it badly or incorrectly has a price that a person may not be willing to pay..... "

back in '77 during our record breaking winter here in N.E. Ohio, the house I rented/lived in had a sloped property, front of house was at street level, and back of house, due to the hill, had a basement and door that opened to the rear driveway.. the Hot water heater was about 10 feet from the door, we decided to "test" the snow maker theory, and hooked up the hose, with a sprayer nozzle on it, and played...during a drinking party...
we made a huge mound in a very short time.... it was a blast to use as a slide, from the upper porch deck, down to the driveway...

New Port Richey motorcyclist dies after popping wheelie just before Tampa crash, troopers say

TAMPA — A 36-year-old New Port Richey man died Wednesday after he popped a wheelie on his motorcycle and was then cut off by a car, resulting in a crash that threw him from his motorcycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash took place at about 8:20 p.m. Tristan Velez was riding a 2018 Kawasaki motorcycle north on N Florida Avenue, approaching Celestial Oaks Drive when he elevated the front wheel of the bike and started riding on the back wheel, pointing the headlight skyward, troopers said.

Approaching the motorcycle from the opposite direction was a 2006 Chevy Cobalt driven by 26-year-old Jean Rony Jean Jacques. It was headed south in the inside lane on N Florida Avenue.

The Chevy changed lanes to get into the continuous left hand turn lane, and then turned left — crossing into the motorcycle’s path. The Chevy driver did not see Velez’s motorcycle, troopers said,

The motorcycle collided with the car and Velez was thrown off the bike and into the car, the Highway Patrol said. He later died from his injuries at AdventHealth Tampa hospital. He was wearing a helmet.

The Chevy driver, who was using his seatbelt, was taken to the same hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

No charges appear to be pending in this case. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, troopers said. In Florida it is illegal for motorcyclists to operate “with one wheel off the ground at any time,” according to state law.

Sad. Heavy price to pay for being stupid. I don't do wheelies and besides all the other reasons why it is dangerous on the street, have never thought about the problem of doing it a night and now the headlight is not pointing forward. Feel bad for the other driver.

A driver tried to jump a bridge opening in his car. Now two people are dead

Two men died early Friday when a driver tried to jump a car over an opening created by a pontoon swing bridge in southwestern Louisiana, state police said on Facebook.

According to the post, shortly before 2 a.m. CT, Louisiana State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in the water at the Black Bayou Bridge on Louisiana Highway 384 near Lake Charles.
Two men from Texas died in the crash.

A witness told police that the driver of a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze stopped at the bridge, which was closed to vehicular traffic as a boat passed on the Intracoastal Waterway. The 165-foot section of the bridge on pontoons had been moved to allow the ship to pass.

The car passenger got out and pushed up a gate arm to allow the driver to continue. The driver picked up the passenger and went up to a section of the bridge that is raised as boats pass.

The driver put the car in reverse, stopped then raced up the ramp but the car landed in the water. It sank to the bottom with the driver, 23-year-old Alejandro Cazares of McAllen, Texas, in it. The other man -- 32-year-old Roberto Alejandro Moreno of Edinburg, Texas -- got out of the car but died in the river.

Investigators are working to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Drugs or alcohol involved? Ya think?

Latest 'Vacuum Challenge' craze could have fatal consequences, health experts warn

A new social media challenge involving a vacuum cleaner and trash bags has gone viral, much to the dismay of health experts, who warn that the idiotic trend could have fatal results.

Numerous videos have emerged on YouTube showing participants of the “Vacuum Challenge” — also known as the “Trash Bag Challenge” — climbing into a garbage bag and letting another person suck the air out with a vacuum hose, often until it becomes so tight that the person topples over, according to Yahoo News.

Experts warn that the challenge can lead to cerebral hypoxia, which is a condition that leads to a decrease of oxygen supply to the brain, despite the presence of adequate blood flow, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

“Brain cells are extremely sensitive to oxygen deprivation and can begin to die within five minutes after oxygen supply has been cut off,” the institute says.

Participants who take on the challenge alone risk getting stuck since the vacuum-sealed bags make it difficult to move.

I'm thinking that anyone who takes this 'challenge' doesn't have all that many brain cells to start out with and that they should hold on to the two or three that they have left.  ::)

If they want a real challenge maybe they should try the same thing using Space Bags?

Wasp spray used as meth alternative in West Virginia, possibly linked to 3 overdoses: police

At least three overdose deaths in West Virginia may be linked to a growing trend in Boone County where police believe drug users are turning to wasp spray as an alternative form of methamphetamine.

Sgt. Charles Sutphin with the West Virginia State Police said that people are using the cans of insect repellent to create a “synthetic” version of the drug.

"We're seeing this here on the streets in Boone County," Sutphin told Charleston's WCHS-TV. "People are making a synthetic type methamphetamine out of wasp spray."

Sutphin said the wasp spray can cause erratic behavior and extreme swelling of the hands and feet. He also warned that users can experience a fatal allergic reaction to the synthetic drug after repeated use.

"From what we're being told, if you use it, you know, you might use it once or twice and be fine, but the third time when your body hits that allergic reaction, it can kill you.”

The local station reported Monday that stores in Boone County sold nearly 30 cans of wasp spray on Friday alone.

State police believe at least three overdose deaths last week are tied to the use of the spray as a meth alternative.

Police: Man asked police for help with his illegal gun

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man who police said called the DeKalb police to get a rifle from a residence he no longer lived at is facing felony gun charges and remains in jail.

According to court documents, Edward P. Hoover, 38, of the 500 block of State Street, called police just after 5 p.m. Sept. 6 to ask about getting a firearm he had at home in the 1300 block of Adams Way, DeKalb. When police arrived, they asked a woman who lived there if they could search the home and she agreed, according to court documents.

During the search, police found a .22-caliber Keystone Crickett rifle with a sawed-off stock and barrel, along with .22-caliber ammunition, according to court documents. The woman said she did not know they were there before, according to court documents.

Hoover, who pleaded guilty to a felony charge in Sept. 2004 in Cook County, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm without a FOID card and possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

If convicted of the most serious offense of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, Hoover could face up to 10 years in prison.

He was picked up on a warrant by DeKalb police Saturday, Cmdr. Bob Redel said.

In court Monday, Judge Phillip Montgomery ordered that Hoover be held on a $10,000 bond. If he were to come up with the $1,000 needed to get out of jail, Hoover also would be placed on pretrial supervision and electronic home monitoring, Montgomery ordered.

Hoover is next due in court Oct. 11 for a preliminary hearing.

Ok, based on the statement "In court Monday, Judge Phillip Montgomery ordered that Hoover be held on a $10,000 bond. If he were to come up with the $1,000 needed to get out of jail" I have an (honest) question.  (?)

I've seen this before; a person has to come up with 1/10th of the Bond/Bail to get out of jail.
Why is there a bond set and a person has to come up with only 1/10th of that amount?  :o

To me, the idea definitely qualifies as "Stupid is as stupid does".

It usually works out all around. If "dufus" doesn't show he (or usually his bondsman) owe the court $10,000. The 10% usually ends up being the fee that the bondsman gets to keep after dufus is convicted or exonerated. This works out in that the tax payer is relieved of the burden of housing; feeding;and medically attending to the dufus. The state doesn't have to keep tabs on the dufus as usually the bondsman makes the dufus check in weekly or will do the search for dufus when dufus goes missing. This also prevents an undo burden on the poor if they are innocent, in that they can continue to work and not get too much poorer as they would if in jail waiting for trial. It could occasionally leave a bondsman in a bad spot financially but then that applies to almost any business. There may be insurance companies that insure bondsmen for all I know about it.

Apologies to anyone here that might be named "dufus", no insult was intended.

Yeah, all of that plus it is a Constitutional right to have physical freedom unless convicted of some crime or if one presents a 'immediate and dire' danger to society.

As to the bail bondsman losing that 90% (or whatever it is in each circumstance), remember there are a lot of bounty hunters in the US and they can be outright relentless, and vicious, in the pursuit of those with outstanding warrants. And as they only get paid when they produce these persons, they put a lot of effort into it as well as it being their only job; picking up those with outstanding warrants usually falls pretty low on the 'to do' list of gov't employed law enforcement.

Still seems like a stupid system to me.

More sense; Set the Bond for a reasonable number that some can post Bond for, not an unreal number that can't be met and let them pay 10%.

Reason I ask; We have had a "Dufus" in our area that Bonded out 3 times in a row for snatching purses and beating up old ladies.   After he got out the 3rd time, he tried again, shot a cop and the cop shot/killed him. (Good riddance)

I don't think the bond system was the fault there.  If there was a repeat pattern, it seems odd the judge would set a reachable bond or even allow it at that point.  I believe they do have discretion for such situations (although I really don't know for sure).

I guess this would really be 'stupid is as stupid says', at least sometimes.

Apparently Robert De Niro is afraid that the current president, Donald Trump, may be able to serve three terms as President by starting a war.... The idea was suggested to him by Martin Scorsese. De Niro alludes to that fact that the only President to serve more than two terms was Franklin Roosevelt (true) and seems to be saying that that was because of 'a war' (World War II): not true. FDR served more than two terms because he was elected again in his second term and THAT WAS LEGAL AT THAT TIME. This is truly amazing to me as it would seem that both of these gentlemen (De Niro and Scorsese) are a little 'shy' in their knowledge of the 'owner's manual for the USA', the Constitution. Specifically, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution that expressly forbids anyone from serving more than two terms (though technically one <could> serve more than eight years if some part of that time in office was in finishing another President's term though not more than two years of it.... 10 years max. as President of the US).

Now ignorance and stupidity are things we have in abundance and we all have to deal with them and the results of both of them. The problem is that the stupider of the population seem to give greater importance to the OPINIONS, correct or not, of celebrities. I have no idea why that is but it does seem to be so. Amazing

The idea was suggested to him by Martin Scorsese.

You know, it would all make more sense if it had been suggested by Oliver Stone, as I'm sure he could have wound up a conspiracy theory on how they were going to get around
the restrictions in the constitution. Since it's Scorsese, I guess it was all just based on ignorance. Not that there is any short supply on that nationwide when it comes to knowledge of the
U. S. Constitution.

Could be.  And he is a great actor (I like his movies).  The problem is that people need compassion AND a reasonable approach.  "Teach a man to fish" not "give a man a fish".  Of course, there are times you need to do both, but the latter is not a reasonable full/time permanent solution.

The other problem is that TV/Movie/Celebrities are generally not any more knowledgeable, credible, insightful, or capable (outside their field) than anyone else.  Their job is to entertain and pretend to be other people.  It isn't to solve the world's problems.... most have no special skill or knowledge that should afford their voice any more weight than mine or yours (for example).  In many cases, they are so isolated from "reality", their opinions are WORSE.  So when the media rolls out celebrities' virtue signaling and such, it really makes me want to barf (regardless of what position they might have).

As for the people who believe what a preacher/politician/celebrity says over what a doctor/scientist says, well I say let them believe what they will.
I do feel sorry for their children for having to go back to pre-science levels of mortality but then that is what their parents chose for them.
In the long term the problem is self correcting and they may actually be doing Homo Sapiens Sapiens a favour by breeding stupidity and gullibility out of the species.
I think of Anti-Vaxxers as chlorine for the gene-pool  ;D
It's just a shame that their kids, and the kids of others should have to suffer because of their stupidity.  :'(

That's what happens when a huge government steps in and saves everyone from themselves, insulates everyone from the consequence of their poor life choices, and allows everyone to be a "victim".  For example, right now, the government is the "daddy" to how many children?  Freedom doesn't work without responsibility and accountability.

A man allegedly teaching his dog to drive was arrested after leading troopers on a high speed chase

A man was arrested Sunday after leading troopers on a high-speed chase with his dog sitting in the driver's seat, a spokeswoman for the Washington State Patrol said.

The man from Lakewood, Washington, hit two cars on separate occasions and failed to stop both times, leading state troopers on a high-speed chase up Interstate 5, the spokeswoman said. No major injuries were reported in either crash.

"He was driving very erratically. So erratically that multiple people called 911," trooper Heather Axtman told CNN.

The suspect was driving "absolutely recklessly," and a pursuit ensued at 109 miles an hour, she said. One of the troopers attempted to corner the suspect's car, looked inside and realized a pit bull was sitting in the driver's seat while the suspect steered, Axtman said.

As he was trying to evade troopers, the suspect drove onto Centennial Trail, a trail for pedestrians and bicyclists in Snohomish County known for being busy, according to Axtman.
"The fact that there wasn't anybody on the trail is nothing shy of miraculous." Axtman said. "We are very thankful."

Eventually troopers were able to use spike strips to end the pursuit. During the arrest, Axtman said the suspect gave them one explanation: He was "trying to teach his dog how to drive."

"I wish I could make this up," Axtman, who is also a public information officer, said. "I've been a trooper for almost 12 years and wow, I've never heard this excuse. I've been in a lot of high speed chases, I've stopped a lot of cars, and never have I gotten an excuse that they were teaching their dog how to drive."

The Washington State Patrol charged the man with reckless endangerment, hit and run, driving under the influence and felony eluding. His bond was set at $8,500 and he is set to appear in court March 30.

As for the dog, Axtman said the "very sweet girl" was taken to the animal shelter after her owner was arrested.

The dog had no comment and asked for her lawyer.

Update to the above:
Upon further examination, after the arrest, the dog was tested, and found to be under the influence of LSD, Crack Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and had a BAC of 0.40... also found were marijuana blunts, one tucked behind the dogs ear....

the dog kept repeating.. " Dude, all I want is a couple cans of Wolf's Tooth Dogfood..the Dirty Filthy Hippie flavor, but Raccoon flavor will do.. I got the munchies sumpin' feirce..."

A gender reveal sparked a wildfire in California that's grown to 7,000 acres

As multiple wildfires burn in California, one of the fires was started during a gender-reveal party, officials said.

A "smoke generating pyrotechnic device" used at the party caused the El Dorado Fire in San Bernardino County, Cal Fire said in a press release.

The fire started Saturday at 10:23 a.m. at the El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa and spread from the park north on to Yucaipa Ridge, according to the release.

It has since grown to 7,050 acres as of early Monday morning, the Cal Fire incident website shows.

Evacuations have been ordered for the communities of Oak Glen, Yucaipa Ridge, Mountain Home Village and Forest Falls. An evacuation warning is in effect for the Yucaipa bench area and Yucaipa Community Center is being used as a temporary evacuation facility, according to Cal Fire.

More than 500 personnel have been deployed to the fire, along with 60 engines and four helicopters, according to the website.

Overnight weather is expected to remain hot and dry with a relative humidity of 20%, San Bernardino National Forest said in it's evening update on the fire. Winds will also continue at three to five miles per hour with gust up to 10 miles per hour, resulting in "active fire behavior throughout the night."

No charges have been announced in the blaze.

What I was saying, more generically, is you have to treat the presence of stupid (or even "bad") people as a fact of nature.  They just happen- like lightening striking and causing a forest fire.  In the case of the CA fires, it seems like policies that prevented controlled burning and shunned electrical line maintenance have magnified the inherent problems tremendously.  It is true that someone irresponsibly creating a fire situation is bad, but we have to expect it WILL happen.  I am not, however, saying such individuals shouldn't face retribution for their lack of responsibility.

You're right. A pandemic was planed for by the previous administration, despite the lies to the contrary by the current administration. So yes, a pandemic can be planned for.

What couldn't have been foreseen is the stupidity of the populace over how to deal with the virus. I'm talking about how a simple medical mask has been made into a political statement instead of a way to show your patriotism and to protect your fellow citizens. I'm talking about the stupidity of people taking advice from 'experts' who seem to be parrots of the current administration. Filling their heads with what they want to hear. Not the truth but something else, something far more dangerous.

Agreed- doing anything that encourages humans' natural <bad> pack behavior is always a bad idea IME. Not blaming COG and it is probably just a feature of the new software but allowing any degree of elevation to another always turns into a weapon, again IME.

The new software looks pretty nice and has some nice features; the new private messaging system is now under the term 'conversation' and the slick part is a conversation can include more than one person. Further, any member of the conversation can add other members if that is how the owner of the conversation set it up. I have not used the one on COG but I have used it on another forum and it really works well, almost a self- selected sub- forum for specific things that would not be of interest to the main group, such as local events and similar. This software package is supposed to ease integration between the forum and the other facets of the COG on-line presence so it should be a big step forward for those who have to actually run the site.

No plan included all the complexities of COVID-19.  Although in many ways it was like a super-flu, which we have experience with, it defied so many assumptions and acted quite differently than anything seen before.  So many aspects of any such plan wouldn't have been very relevant.  We are STILL learning new stuff regularly, even after 6 to 10 months into it.

I have never had a login on COG, nor looked at it much.  But I did just look...  This score being mentioned is just the number of "likes" posts get.  Typically, posts will also list WHO liked it.  Not all that uncommon on forums.  I can see both good and bad with allowing visible (to others) "likes" on postings, listing who liked it.  Even more issues if it also includes "dislikes."  I tend to not like public "liking" because it can be more of a tribe or mob-mentality.  But private liking (only you see the likes you placed on postings, and the total likes YOU gave to people) would be pretty safe in all situations.  It would help you identify like-minded or helpful people you might want to meet or whatnot.

Like all the forums that use this feature that I have seen, the new COG forum publicly shows the number of likes and who liked the post.

It might be even worse not having a 'dislike' button as a lack of likes could be construed as dislikes. As Marty said, it quickly becomes a weaponized tool used en mass to pound on 'the chosen one'.

Did you send it with that stack of filled out mail in ballots you wanted remailed?

Not that stupid... I hand carried our absentee ballot requests to the Registrar of my county.  When our ballots are sent out, I'll hand carry them to the registrar's office again.  I don't trust the postal service past my arm.

Your Gold Star on the other hand, was sent in the mail.  LOL.

WTF is wrong with people? Damn attention whores!!!!

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/07/us/california-fire-el-dorado-gender-reveal-trnd/index.html (https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/07/us/california-fire-el-dorado-gender-reveal-trnd/index.html)

A firefighter has died in the wildfire caused by these idiots and their gender reveal BS.    :(

https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-09-18/forest-service-firefighter-died-in-california-wildfire (https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-09-18/forest-service-firefighter-died-in-california-wildfire)

The death toll from California’s unprecedented 2020 firestorms rose to 26 after officials announced the death of a firefighter battling the El Dorado fire in San Bernardino County, a blaze sparked by a pyrotechnics from a gender-reveal party.

Few details were immediately available about the death Thursday, and the firefighter’s name had not been released. On Friday, residents in the San Bernardino Mountains area lined the highway in respect as the fallen firefighter was escorted from the fire zone.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time,” the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement released Friday.

The fire broke out Sept. 7 near Yucaipa and is 66% contained. Officials said it was caused by a smoke-emitting pyrotechnic device that was part of a gender-reveal party in a park. Such devices typically shoot off blue or pink smoke to signal the gender of an expected child.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department could not say whether the family whose stunt sparked the fire would be charged in the death, nor have they been identified.

“If investigative reports are filed with our office, we will review all facts, evidence, statements and reports to determine what criminal charges, if any, need to be filed,” San Bernardino County Dist. Atty. Jason Anderson said in a statement Sept. 9, the Associated Press reported.

In Riverside County, the fast-moving Snow fire, started by a vehicle, prompted evacuations near Palm Springs after doubling in size overnight. It was 0% contained.

The El Dorado fire is not the first wildfire sparked by a gender-reveal party. A 2017 fire in Arizona that burned 47,000 acres and caused more than $8 million in damage was set off by an exploding, powder-blue target.

The death in the Yucaipa blaze is the 26th attributed to a California wildfire since August and the third among firefighters in that same span.

On Aug. 19, a firefighting helicopter on a water-dropping mission crashed in Fresno County, killing the pilot, Michael John Fournier, 52, of Rancho Cucamonga.

Firefighter Diane Jones, 63, was fatally injured Aug. 31 while battling the Tatham fire in Tehama County, which was part of the sprawling August Complex fire north of the Bay Area — now considered the largest in California’s modern history.

The largest concentration of fire deaths have been in Butte County, where the North Complex fire swept through a rural region. At least 15 residents were killed.

The victims who have been identified range widely in age: from 16 to 79. Most lived in Berry Creek, a mountain hamlet northeast of Oroville, while two hailed from nearby Feather Falls.

Many simply could not get out before the fire hit.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said Thursday evening that only one person reported missing is still unaccounted for — a promising sign the death toll might not climb higher.

“Our efforts to really get out and start searching areas has increased dramatically,” he said during a briefing, adding: “Because we’re covering a lot more ground, and that number [of fatalities] is staying steady, that gives me some hope.”

They should be held criminally and financially (good luck) responsible, man and woman both sterilized to prevent future occurances, any existing children taken from them (they are obviously too stupid to raise them properly.

Or maybe just take them up in a helicopter and drop them into the fire.

DeKALB - A DeKalb man is facing multiple felony charges after police arrested him in connection to reports of gunfire on Ridge Drive early Tuesday morning after an investigation at his apartment where they found spent shell casings and a loaded gun.

In a news release late Tuesday night, DeKalb Acting Police Chief Bob Redel announced police had made an arrested in the shooting, which police believe was aimed at an unoccupied car.

Maurice Shaw, 44, of DeKalb is charged with armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition without a firearm owners identification Card (FOID) and unlawful Possession of a fun without a FOID card.

If convicted of the most serious offense, being an armed habitual criminal, Shaw could face up to 30 years in jail.

According to the news release, DeKalb police responded to reports of gun shots around 4:35 a.m. in the 900 block of Ridge Drive, and upon arrival, discovered bullet fragments and broken glass around the area.

Police used security camera footage from around the area and identified a suspect vehicle and person of interest, later identified as Shaw. During the investigation, police found the car from the camera footage in the 1100 block of Varsity Boulevard.

During a search of the car, police discovered one used shell casing and broken glass inside the car. Police also obtained a warrant to search Shaw's apartment in the area, and during the search found additional shell casings, ammunition and a loaded gun.

There was no reported damage to the other car which police believe was the target of the gunfire, and no reported injuries during the incident.

Shaw was arrested Tuesday and taken to the DeKalb County Jail, where he'll await a bond hearing at the DeKalb County courthouse Wednesday at 1 p.m. No booking photo of Shaw was made available Tuesday evening, Redel said.

According to the news release, Shaw's arrest was the second arrest made by DeKalb police Tuesday related to gunfire. Juan Franco, 27, of Sycamore was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and violation of a firearm concealed carry act after police say he fired a gun into the air in the Burritoville parking lot.

When attempting a drive by shooting be SURE that your car window is open BEFORE shooting through it.

To be honest, I do believe it. When one realizes that 70% of the world population doesn't use toilet paper, boiled rubber's being reused just doesn't seem that far out.

Question is, how many red light houses was this woman collecting from to get that many used ones?

And what a great way to answer the age- old question- What do you do for a living?

1) I collect used condoms and sort them by color and size.
2) I work in QC of a condom recycling plant (I leave the specifics of the exact job to your imagination).
3) I am in charge of collecting used condoms at the local pharmacy.
4) I keep track of condom recycling so that we never recycle any particular one more than 17 times.
5) I work in a brothel and every other week, I am in charge of recycling the condoms. On odd weeks, I get the better job of cleaning the toilets.
6) Now that we are recycling condoms, I am in charge of 'retrieving' any 'lost' condoms'.

..... I am not out of ideas but they are starting to lose their dignity from here.

To be honest, I do believe it. When one realizes that 70% of the world population doesn't use toilet paper, boiled rubber's being reused just doesn't seem that far out.

Covid isolation is removing our mental filters while increasing our oral/nasal filters, but then my mental filters were always a little too perforated.

..and speaking of porous filters and handling used condoms...etc....any of you have the job of cleaning up a drive in movie theater at three in the morning?
Dragging that stick pole and bag scented with filled diapers, jizzum, and popcorn around 10 acres of hilly land was no picnic. Life really sucks when you're poor and
have to take work where you can get it, and go to school. Yet I was one of the lucky ones...could have been luckier however.

(for Brian) At least I didn't get pregnant, and neither did she, until several years later after I married her. Then 6 months later I was snipped and no more condoms, new or used.  :banana :banana :banana

Back during the "cold war" Russia tried a bit of psychological warfare.  They contacted Trojan here in the U.S. and ordered 2 million condoms, 14 inches long and 4 inches in diameter.

Trojan made the product and shipped them in boxes labeled "Size: MEDIUM"   ;D

Maybe they need to invest in one of those contraptions you see at rental places at airports.  You know, the ones with the teeth that cause the tires to puncture.  It be better to have punctured tires than a damaged railroad bridge or the top of a truck sheared off.  Of course, it would not stop the entertainment value as the morons driving those over height vehicles would come to a complete stop after the saw blades shredded the tires.

I think they did put in a 'bridge protector'. It is not serrated but it is pretty stout and more than a match for most things on most vehicles that tall. Sure there could be the occasional piece of heavy equipment traveling by trailer but those people are smarter than the average bear.

That bridge has its own website: 11foot8.com

So you must of had help then, I didn't. Back rows had less light but twice the "stuff". Still, you have my condolences for that part of your life.

Every once in awhile they'd have an all night spaghetti western marathon, I actually got to sleep in and go clean up at 9 AM. Apparently westerns

My first real tax-paying job was working for a janitorial service.  One of my jobs was cleaning a restaurant after-hours.  While certainly not as bad as what the drive-in theater guys are describing, if you ever had to clean a restaurant kitchen, you'd really, really think twice about eating in a restaurant again.  I certainly never went to THAT place to eat.

I used to work in an American themed bar in Brussels, Belgium. Owner was American, staff were mostly American or British, customers were about 50% American/British/Australian/South African/New Zealander and the other 50% Belgian and a mix of every nationality under the sun.

After one particularly long night (we didn't close until 06:00 sometimes) I went to clean the toilets and found someone had punched a hole in the drywall.
On closer investigation I saw something unexpected in the gap so went to get a flashlight. In between the drywall and the outside brick wall there were 100's of needles. It turns out druggies had been using our bathrooms to shoot up, then standing on the toilet to drop their used needles over the top of the drywall where there was a gap between it and the ceiling.

The owner went batsh!t when he found out. He was very anti-drug.
We ended up with the drug squad placing cameras outside and inside the bar (no, not in the bathrooms) and then one night they pounced and arrested 15 people. 4 went to jail for dealing and the rest got busted for possession. After that the druggies seemed to move on to another bar.
We ended up with Stainless steel sheet walls and ceiling in the bathrooms and very bright lights.
Cleaning out those needles was a job I was dreading but the drug squad did it for us so they could do forensic tests.  ;D

On some nights cleaning the toilets made me . Often the women's toilets were the worst!
Some people just need putting out of our misery!

On some nights cleaning the toilets made me . Often the women's toilets were the worst!
Some people just need putting out of our misery!

Misogynistic ALARM GOING OFF NOW!     (easy Boomer, I'm just joking)

Before I was elevated in my career path to Drive-in-Theater grounds maintenance, I worked at an urban gas station.
All too often it was my turn to clean the restrooms, much less preferred than changing oil. I agree the Ladies room was much worse.
In a more rural environment the bathrooms are mostly used for what they were intended to be used for because the users are
usually many miles from their own bathrooms. However in the city most are not that far from their own bathrooms
and thus they get used more for stuff that they were not intended for...sex, illegal drug administering and sales, blood and
knife/gunshot wound cleanup, emergency underwear removal because of unintended fecal matter release while driving...etc. Why they usually
went to the ladies room for these things I'll never know. The men's room? While initially cleaner looking upon entering, soon
after entering the men's room the smell of urine was overwhelming. Apparently the majority of guys don't or can't aim very well.  ::)  ???

Driver busted for using flashlights as headlights on his car

A driver in Washington was pulled over after police noticed the headlights on his car had been replaced by flashlights.

A Washington State Patrol officer pulled over a motorist on I-90 near North Bend early Monday morning after seeing the vehicle with "super dim" headlights, WSP officer Rick Johnson told CNN.

Flashlights were used to replace the headlights on the motorist's vehicle.

Upon inspection, the officer realized that the headlights on the car had been replaced by flashlights, which is illegal in the state as it does not meet the lumen requirements, Johnson said.

The car appears to have noticeable damage to the front of the car and the headlights seem to have fallen or broken off. The lights were running out of power, and the motorist was driving on a suspended license, according to Johnson.

"I don't know of any car manufacturer that duct tapes flashlights to the front of their cars upon sale," Johnson said. "But you know, I guess this is 2020, right?"

Quick-thinking Roscoe businessman protects elderly couple from scam

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A Roscoe shipping store owner intercepted a fraudulent money transfer last year, and says he’s seen multiple customers nearly fall victim to scams.

Marshall Barkley owns Roscoe Pack and Mail, at 5062 Rockrose Ct, says yesterday someone posed as an officer from the Milwaukee Police Department and told an elderly couple from Beloit that their granddaughter was being detained because she was involved in illegal activity.

The fraudster asked for $8,000 in cash for her release.

The concerned couple tried to wire the money at Barkley’s shop, but he said he realized something wasn’t right.

“I went to the back. I opened it up and it was a magazine and it was completely full of $100 bills. It was a total of $8,000 they were shipping,” he said.

Barkley said he stopped the couple from sending the cash and called the police.

In the past year, he said someone tried wiring $9,000 in a scam.

Dennis Horton of the Better Business Bureau, says that scam is known as “The Grandparent’s Scam,” and says the criminals are professionals who hunt for those who will provide them with sensitive personal information that can be used against them.

“Or they don’t use a name at all, they simply say, ‘hi, this is your grandson or granddaughter who is calling, and you, ‘oh hello, Johnny,’ how are ya? And they say, ‘oh I’m fine.’ Well, you’ve already given them the name of your grandchild,” Horton warns.

Horton says if you receive a phone call from an unrecognized number, don’t engage with the caller.

Scams can be reported to the BBB’s Scam Tracker service, which are reported weekly to local police.

Roscoe Police Chief Jamie Evans said authorities get reports of scams all the time, and believes training could help cut down on the number of victims.

“I think we need more people like the Pack and Mail, more companies like that, to do a training for [other businesses] to educate their employees [on what to look for],” she said.

Wow, good Samaritan there, but I'd do the same thing as he did. Sadly, this is a common scam, my moms friend got taken a few years ago. I keep telling my parents to not give any info to anybody who calls and to verify with me or my sister when any niece or nephew or grandchild calls with requests for money as they are hard of hearing and get confused quickly on the phone, perfect targets.

Yep, those folks were EXTREMELY lucky that the clerk was an honest man. If he had not been, he could have easily pocketed that $8k in cash and shipped the empty magazine. No one would have been the wiser and the end result would have been exactly the same.

I just don't know how anyone could be that stupid and gullible. In what world would an official request that cash be sent inside of a magazine such as was done here? And then the elderly couple does not check on the voracity of the story at all?

There's a sucker born every minute.

Unfortunately, these types of "elder abuse" scams are very common and increasing.  Many older people don't understand technology at all and also start to lose their reasoning, it is a very bad combination.  I can see this in my mother, who seems more confused and bewildered every year.  She is far too trusting, and doesn't understand security, so I greatly fear such scams.  She wouldn't fall for something THAT stupid (like your example), but there are more sophisticated ones where I could see that being a problem.
Title: Re: Stupid is as stupid does
Post by: Strawboss on February 28, 2021, 08:49:45 AM
I'm not so sure that stupid is the correct word here, easily confused and overwhelmed. Example, my dad answers the phone, a muffled voice on the other end nervously starts to talk and pleads for money for bail on a traffic stop out of state, he can't hear well and the voice has the correct name, he has all the bonafides and kinda sounds correct but hey, he's calling from jail right? The voice starts in about needing a lawyer and he doesn't have a credit card so cash is the only way to pay, he lost his cash so he needs money when he gets out for a hotel and gas to get home as he travels a lot and hasn't seen grampa in a few months. $8000 in cash and the way it's shipped would be the sticking point for my dad. In the past these money scams hinged on the prey being greedy as they were assured a cut in whatever scam was playing out, many were ashamed afterward and never reported it to the police or family. Electronic scams are worse, thankfully my parents have no computers and a cell phone to be used for emergency only.

Wisconsin driver has no seats in car, uses camping chair as driver’s seat

A Wisconsin State Patrol trooper pulled over a pickup truck after the trooper noticed the vehicle was not equipped with seats.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the driver was seated in a camping chair and the vehicle was not equipped with any seats.

The area of the incident was in the North Central Region of Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin State Patrol also mentioned the specific rule that requires seats.

But, did he have his seatbelts on?    ::)

I find it hard to believe that the guy could even drive the truck that way. His head had to be hitting the headliner in that truck. And what's up with the snow inside the thing?

The snow I'm guessing is because the heater in that beater don't work. :rotflmao:
If he is using that for a seat, chances are the truck is a rusted out POS that probably shouldn't even be on the road.
Over here a stunt like that would result in the vehicle being impounded and probably crushed.

I have actually seen this before, quite awhile ago though, the guy was working on the interior and the car was his only way around town, it was the old style aluminum web beach type. It was a small town and his drives were short. The other time I saw something similar was when my friend's buddy "hungry Chuck" removed the front set of his car so he could sit in the back seat to drive as he was well over 500lbs.

At least in this case, the automated warning system did not warn of the oversize situation.  Probably because the crane thing on top was so narrow.  Of course, the driver still should have known his height, regardless.

Most of the time, the warning system DOES work, and then people IGNORE IT!!!  That is what is the stupidest thing about that underpass- people hitting it when they were TOLD they would hit it.

BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) — A motorcycle crash sent one person to a local trauma center and shut down Henry Avenue in Beloit Thursday morning.

Beloit Police say two people on motorcycles, a 41-year-old Beloit man and a 31-year-old Beloit woman, were driving at a high speed when the man crashed his motorcycle into an SUV that was turning left. Officials say the SUV had the right-of-way.

Police say the woman saw the crash and laid her bike down.

The 41-year-old man was transported to Mercyhealth Hospital & Trauma Center in Janesville for ‘significant injuries.’ Both motorcyclists were wearing helmets, investigators say.

The driver of the SUV, a 35-year-old Beloit male, will be cited for operating after suspension.

The male motorcyclist will be cited for no motorcycle endorsement, crossing the center line, unreasonable and imprudent speed, and no insurance.

The female motorcyclist will be cited for no motorcycle endorsement and no insurance.

Police say the woman saw the crash and laid her bike down.

She had to lay it down, no choice in the matter. Lay that sucker down.    ::)

I find it interesting that the person making the left turn had the right of way.  I don’t know the specific circumstances, but usually, a person making any turn has to do so in a safe manner.

That’s not to say it’s impossible to turn without protections, such as turning with a green left turn arrow or someone else traveling so fast, that a reasonable person wouldn’t expect someone to be traveling so fast as to constitute a hazard.  I’d like to know more about the specifics of this collision.

Could have been a left turn with a left turn traffic signal.  Other than that I agree with you on the left turn right of way business.

Could have been a left turn with a left turn traffic signal.  Other than that I agree with you on the left turn right of way business.

At a 4 way-stop or a completely unmarked intersection (which is rare), if the person making the left turn was there first, they would have the right of way (or if they arrived at the same time but were on the right/counter-clockwise).  That is about the only other non-green-arrow-light situation I can think of with right of way for a left-turner.  Well, other than the previous example of someone else going so far above the speed limit that a reasonable person turning left could not have known they needed to yield.

Of course, all of this is flipped if you live in a backwards/left-side-drive country :)  Then substitute "right turn" for all the "left turn" situations discussed.

Interesting comment for someone living in a country (USA) with 4 times the road death rate per 100,000 population, and over twice the death rate per vehicle miles travelled, as compared to a certain left-side-drive country (UK). Now who's backwards?  :rotflmao:

Personally I drive on whichever side of the road is mandated by local laws. I learned to ride motorcycles on the right side of the road (Belgium), learned to drive cars on the left side of the road (UK) and can do either with either type of vehicle. About the only thing that gives me problems is driving stick shift in right-side-drive cars, so I always get an automatic rental.

If you want to experience true terror, go to India and rent a car. There they use whichever side of the road is emptiest and don't seem to care if they live or die.

The side of the road isn't the cause of that, our poor driving tests/requirements are.  I know there are much worse countries in that regard, but we really could do better.  In any case, I chose definition 2a:

2a : in a reverse or contrary direction or way

Darwin for the win!

A South Carolina woman who was hoarding gasoline caught on fire Thursday after her vehicle crashed and burst into flames, authorities said.

The Pickens County Sheriff's Office said the accident occurred after a deputy attempted to stop a 2007 Pontiac G6 with a stolen license plate.

"The driver of the Pontiac turned left onto Wolf Creek Road and accelerated the vehicle in an attempt to elude law enforcement," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "The deputy then activated his vehicle’s siren. Before the deputy could complete radio traffic with the Communications center, the driver of the Pontiac lost control of the vehicle leaving the roadway and completely flipping the vehicle."

Authorities said "multiple explosions" could be heard coming from inside the car. When the driver, identified as Jessica Gale Patterson, got out of the car, she was on fire.

"The deputy pushed Ms. Patterson to the ground in order to put out the flames," the sheriff's office said.

Patterson, 28, was taken to a hospital. Her condition was unknown Friday.

The aftermath of the wreck was captured on a video that was shared on Facebook. It shows large flames and heavy black smoke billowing from the car.

According to the department, Patterson told deputies that she had been hoarding several containers of fuel in the trunk of her car. Authorities said the containers of gasoline sparked the explosions.

Across the Southeast, people have been panic-buying gasoline after hackers broke in to some of Colonial Pipeline's networks, causing the U.S. fuel pipeline to temporarily shut down operations.

Colonial, the country’s largest artery for transporting fuel, said in an online statement that it restarted its entire pipeline system and has begun product delivery.

"Following this restart, it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal," the statement read. "Some markets served by Colonial Pipeline may experience, or continue to experience, intermittent service interruptions during this start-up period. Colonial will move as much gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel as is safely possible and will continue to do so until markets return to normal."

A Hummer in Florida burst into flames right after a driver filled four containers with gas.

Citrus County Fire Rescue said they responded to a call at a Texaco Food Mart in Homosassa, Fla. for a vehicle on fire on Wednesday.

Four 5-gallon containers filled with gasoline were in the back of the vehicle when it caught fire, officials said.

One person was injured but refused to be treated. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Thousands have been running to gas stations after the Colonial Pipeline shutdown caused panic buying. Videos and photos circulated of long lines and some putting extra gas in plastic bags.

The pipeline restarted its system on Wednesday and by Thursday the Colonial Pipeline Co. said product delivery had commenced for all the markets they serve.
