Title: Show us your twisties!
Post by: Conrad on May 24, 2011, 09:50:16 AM
I only have 3 halfway decent twisties on my daily commute.

Here's two of them, a nice S curve actually. It's hard to tell from the pics but both curves are very nicely banked. The first pic is looking towards the east and the second is looking back towards the west and that curve continues for a bit behind me in the pic.

I think of the 35mph limit as more of a suggestion. It's very easy to double that speed (and then some, so I've been told   ;) ). I can't do that once the corn gets too high though since the corners become nearly blind then.

edited to add these great motorcycle road websites.

I opened this thread think there was gonna be some entirely different pics.   ;D

I will try to get some pics of the road right outside my front door.  I have some great twisties here and I enjoy every chance I get to go rail them.

If it is an 'S' curve, does that count as one twisty, or two?

Since I only have 3 on my commute, I'm counting it as 2.

Wow, I got more twisties than that in my driveway!

(Not really, just kidding... ;) )

I know, I know, I'm twisty deprived. Not too many of 'em out in corn country.

Living on a former lakebed (the lake is still here, just much lower than in dinosaur times), with a strong emphasis on the grid system here in the flat terrain (you can easily see structures 30 miles away, such as smokestacks), twisties?  Yeah, right!

However, less than an hour away, we have...

Wolf Creek (http://www.canyonchasers.net/maps/results.php?id=17)
Monte Cristo Canyon (http://www.canyonchasers.net/maps/results.php?id=19)
East Canyon (http://www.canyonchasers.net/maps/results.php?id=37)
Big Cottonwood Canyon (http://www.canyonchasers.net/maps/results.php?id=35)
Little Cottonwood Canyon (http://www.canyonchasers.net/maps/results.php?id=36)
Old Snowbasin Road (http://www.canyonchasers.net/maps/results.php?id=23)

Plus many other options within several hours ride.  Of course, some of these are still SNOWED IN at the moment... the price you pay for living near pretty mountains.  That and all the other people on those roads recreating as well.

Johnson's Pass, somewhat close to Miller Motorsports Park, is one of our fallbacks until the funner/longer canyons finally defrost...

Johnson's Pass (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Terra,+UT&daddr=UT-199+E%2FMormon+Trail&hl=en&geocode=FTRBZwIdPXRJ-Sn16eXnpndShzEiX61BTPWDZg%3BFbx6ZwIdRFVL-Q&mra=mift&mrsp=1&sz=12&sll=40.322467,-112.538452&sspn=0.133233,0.193634&ie=UTF8&ll=40.325085,-112.565918&spn=0.133228,0.193634&z=12)

We (me and another on 2 Connies) will be in the Denver area at end of next week from Seattle. Hope the weather will allow us to get up on some of those good Rocky mountain roads.

Colorado roads are just so amazing....I drove all over in my nieces Murano in late October-crazy icy mountain passes and such---Closed 34(is that the rocky mountain hwy?) cost me a 3 hour detour(my fault) to get to The Stanley Hotel(Shining) and even stumbled upon "OH My God Road" around a casino town....Great times even in a cage!

Full disclosure.
I don't know exactly where this photo was taken but it is typical of around here.
Although, it is hard to find "mountains" as big as this one.  When I travel I stay away from the centre of the continent because I've seen
enough "flatlands".

A loop around Mt Evans, CO...both pics taken from the same spot...one facing West...the other facing East...at about 10,500 feet elevation...it's a thirty-mile loop that takes most of an hour at near the posted speeds...and it's right off I-70!

We rode the Mt Evans road @ the COG National in '08.

A local on his new zx-14 was doing 'laps' up and down and repeat. He offered to show around and ended up @ his favorite pub! ;D

Did ya say "Twisties"?  We did 250 miles in the mountains today...and this was just a slice of it!

Pic 1 shows that there is another set like this up the hill a quarter of a mile...if you can read the sign by the white pick-up...(pic taken from L arrow sign in pic 2)

Pic 2 shows how this thing drops away as you turn into it...(pic taken from near bike in pic 3)

Pic 3 shows how far it drops and how tight it is...(pic taken from L arrow sign in pic 2)

Pic 4 shows how peaceful the exit is...(pic taken from near bike in pic 3)

BTW...we were having intercom conversation this far apart with our UClears...crystal clear!

Well, OK, I guess I can trust you folks to keep a secret...

Since there are twisties everywhere around me, and I like them all, here is my top secret tire testing loop, which is a couple miles from my front door.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=E+Crown+Point+Hwy/E+Historic+Columbia+River+Hwy&daddr=E+Larch+Mountain+Rd+to:E+Haines+Rd+to:45.531997,-122.290756&hl=en&geocode=FfzCtgId0vy1-A%3BFThztgId3na3-A%3BFSXHtgIdPFK3-A%3B&abauth=985a5871:NAydFr-_v8piZXaE2PXOnwxieEM&mra=mi&mrsp=3&sz=18&vps=1&jsv=346c&sll=45.532271,-122.290138&sspn=0.003318,0.003777&num=10 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=E+Crown+Point+Hwy/E+Historic+Columbia+River+Hwy&daddr=E+Larch+Mountain+Rd+to:E+Haines+Rd+to:45.531997,-122.290756&hl=en&geocode=FfzCtgId0vy1-A%3BFThztgId3na3-A%3BFSXHtgIdPFK3-A%3B&abauth=985a5871:NAydFr-_v8piZXaE2PXOnwxieEM&mra=mi&mrsp=3&sz=18&vps=1&jsv=346c&sll=45.532271,-122.290138&sspn=0.003318,0.003777&num=10) (switch to Sat or Ter view, and zoom out for additional views).

Almost never see a car, not many driveways, plenty of chances to grind the pegs.  It's just under a 20 mile run, with lots of quick elevation changes thrown in for added fun.  Remember, it's a secret, so don't tell anyone.  :)

If someone wants me to go on a ride with them, I'll either take them East on the Crown Point Highway (very scenic, lots of twisties and water falls), or south along the Sandy River, on Gordon Creek Road.  Frankly, there's so many options around here, I make it a point to avoid the interstates whenever possible.

This run incorporates four separate groups of twisties (Wolf Creek Pass, Indian School, Energy Loop, Mt. Nebo Loop), and takes about nine hours (with lunch breaks and stuff) to do.  I was a little saddle sore at the end of that ride, but it was worth it!

The best road near me, unfortunately when the weather is nice, there are too many cages in the way doing 25 or less, and to attempt the run at night would be suicide with the overpopulation of deer in the park.
