Title: South FL to Canada with a junk lens
Post by: stevewfl on June 28, 2012, 03:33:06 PM
Ok, Canada just to drop in on a friend but I'm going mountain hopping all over the east part of our country and on to  Maine for Lobster. I'll post a few pics of the adventure in this thread along the way.

1st stop will be Saturday at a BBQ shack (literally) up in Georgia where they're hickory smokin' some HOG!  <thanks SteveJ>

The old junk lens I'm taking has a story though
A group of photographers across the country have been passing around an old lens and they sent it my way.  I'll use the junk lens and my amateurish back-up D80 Nikon body for the trip pics.

I opened the box and the ancient lens jumped out and flew on top of a beauty dish light modifier I had used on my last model shoot.

The old lens forced my cam to take a pic before i could set up decent studio lighting or tweak the white balance!? (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

The Connie 14 beast is packed and ready to sling around some mountain roads, too bad for me the house sitter won't be here till tomorrow!

Of course its going to be a whole lot further the way I'm going.  "Interstates" to be kept to a minimal!

Sweet, another interactive road trip thread! So where's the Spot page link?

Kidding, have a good ride Steve!  Be sure to update the thread as your adventure unfolds, or get someone to do it for you.

There is a Border- To- Border Insanity run which entails having to be present in all three countries (US, Canada and Mexico in any order) w/in 24 hours. Doing that on the east coast would be murder though as it is further between the northern and southern US borders than it is in, say, the middle of the country. 2,000 miles in 24 hours would be tough to do under any circumstances with US speed limits in place.

I'm gojng to try my best to look you guys up soon!

So yesterday house sitter came around early and I met SteveJ and we went up to GA for lunch at the shack by the track.  SteveJ plotted my course out west coast (and even new dirt short cuts in Utah and we're in FL) and colorado last year and helped me with Maine this year. I appreciate it too.  After a huge lunch he went back south and I went North.

DAMN this  Shack by the Track place is good.  And of course real hickory.  not mesquite like out west, or OAK and PALM tree like FL................ just real Hickory smoke. Pic of SteveJ:

I was there too
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120629-DSC_1203.jpg)

I went through GA it was 110 degrees.  Everyone thats been through the badlands of OK or the desert of AZ realizes mesh is no good (gloves or jacket).  Its like riding through a blow torch at speed.  Leather or textile  is a must. I was skeptical of the RS Taichi jacket when I left Tampa, but was thanking God I had it when I got in that heat.  Kept the heat blast off perfectly while letting a draft flow through.  I'm now sold on the brand.  Today wasn't as bad as yesterday since I made it to the mountains.  I did too many places in NC/TN to list. Was in the saddle 13 hours of all back country mtn roads: Gap/ Cheroholla/LOCALS ROADS/Asheville/Boone/Blowing Rock/ The mad HWY 181 (and more locals roads) and tonight I'm in Hickory before meeting a lady tomorrow for breakfast.  Again the jacket rocks, and it got special attention!

Sweet rest area on the blue ridge parkway (on a rare part of the parkway plenty of places to pass we ride), of all the times I've been past it I never stopped and looked at it
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120701-DSC_1217.jpg)

Stopped on a backroad and took a "break" by a zombie building.  Would it have been wrong to steal these old horseshoes?

"StudioS"!   This photography studio is different than the ones in Tampa I shoot in.  I appreciate boudoir customers walking on pavement in their heels instead of the dirt this guy has for an extrance but hey if he makes it work thats great.

We were railing the bikes outside of Boone and before we could think about pulling over to don rain gear we were in a hailstorm from hell. Sounded like machine gun fire hitting my helmet.  The jacket got it first soaking =)

Tomorrow I'm doing the 421 SNAKE and then some extreme sweet  twisties of WV.  And that state is the best kept secret ever. I'm still amazed it hasn't been infiltrated by squids, tourist riders, and hardly-ablesons (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

Then Tuesday gonna blister some pavement and get to the Catskills to watch nephews play a baseball tournament

Have fun in WV, I know I had a blast there last year.  And you are right it is a well kept secret because I don't think I saw more than 20 vehicles outside of towns the whole day I was riding through the hills and hollers.

you're giving away the top secret. And the road between Marion VA to Tazewell to Welch VA is incredible  :D

Thanks guys

I road backroads of NC/TN/VA/WV and then interstate through a small piece of Maryland and PA.  600 miles of mostly switchbacks. Wow what a day it was. WV is incredible every time I ride it.

Few pics, can't post process on this crappy laptop monitor but saving the raw files for when I get back.

Hickory  to the Snake
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120701-DSC_1222.jpg)

Then I hit the real backroads, routes plotted into GPS and way off the main roads.  OK so this guy in the country is raising fighting gamecocks. Wish I'd have brought my zoom lens.

On a back road from hell in WV and came up on an abandoned zombie school, real cracks in the columns and all going on
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120702-DSC_1226.jpg)

Was turned on to "the hangout in Welch, WV".  It says Drive - in, but everyone is inside socializing. Made some new friends there, I'll be back =)

Look up Susan's Fish and Chips. In Portland on RT 302 ( Forest Ave. and StevensAve) Good fried food. Also check out the Old Port. Near the waterfront. Nice area. Especially if looking for bars. I love Portland. I grew up in that perfect size of a city.

Thanks for the great advice, I ate there and it was EVERYTHING you said it was!

Was GREAT meeting BDF and his lovely wife....   AND KIRBY TOO!

I'm in Atlantic City last night/today/tonight rolling some dice and clothes shopping and still eating coastal foods. I got here in the wee hours last night after a 800 mile day that started in Maine and included a night ride around NYC

Maine was none other than GREAT. Went south from there. BDF met me spur of the moment and had a GREAT time riding with him and his lovely wife in Rhode Island, can't beleive how nice that place it. Also we went to Mystic, CT its a crazy town, and hit NYC on the way through because the Connie had never been there.

Staying in Trump Tower and will catch up on a few pics tonight, and will be getting back on a twisty path tomorrow heading southwest out ofNew England from here!

Great meeting you too Steve. Kirby can't stop talking about it but then again, it was his first time out of state. Now there are at least a few people in CT who have been either a little shocked or outright offended by either Kirby or Mr. Elkhoof.

An elk's front hoof and lower leg: free (thanks again Chet!)
Webbing to attach it to the bike: $7.00
The look on people's faces when they see it: priceless

Glad you had a good time and a decent meal here in little Rhody.

We have a few photos but they are on Andrea's camera so they will have to wait until tonight or tomorrow night. And you have the photo of Kirby in that special tourist spot (the waitress probably still has not recovered).

Brian

Catch up some crazy pics-

Catfish my nephew caught in the Catskills
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120703-DSC_1247.jpg)

Back roads to Montreal (from Catskills through these moutains)

Canada - Friend in Montreal I visited has quite the car collection and lifts installed in his garages. A new viper is his every day driver. I liked his white GT500, its his weekend car and he's done a ton of mods to it.  He also has a stock one with 21 miles on a lift that he said will never see the street, and he has a Z06 Vette that he said isn't much fun to drive compared to the other cars and he's about to sell it. I took a few phone pics
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120706-20120706_063956.jpg)

Vermond, NH, Maine - Ate at a lobster shack in the cool brisk ocean breeze upper Maine after visiting Montreal and motorcyling the beautiful mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. Another check mark on my bucket list!

This was at Boothbay Harbor
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120706-20120706_163017.jpg)

This was a shack in town (Portland), suggested by our forum bud and he was spot-on!!!

Rhode Island-

I met KIRBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I can't thank Brian and his lovely wife enough for the wonderful dinner/ride/hanging out
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120707-DSC_1290.jpg)

Geez I never knew Rhode Island was so incredible, I didn't see a dull spot anywhere.
Quaint lighthouse, I hit the wrong parts (and not enough!) of US1 in Maine didn't see any
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120707-DSC_1294.jpg)

Ct- We rode to "Mystic Pizza"!  They exploained to me the movie plays over and over in there but no sound.

I need my pro cam for high night ISO and blur prevention. Talk about a non-stop butt burner....  Brain and the KiPass proven bike
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120707-DSC_1302.jpg)

NYC/NJ-  got to Atlantic City in the middle of the night after riding NYC. So far I'm up on these Casinos

Ona  scale of 1-10 of Casinos I've stayed at in Vegas, this one in NJ ranks about a 7.  Although i like the bathroom colors and stuff that matches
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/Can_Maine4Lob/20120708-20120708_161758_edit0.jpg)

He sure did meet Kirby and he also met Mr. Elkhoof besides! A banner day. It was a big day for Kirby too- for the very first time, he rode out of state and got to visit Mystic Pizza. My. Elkhoof has been all across the country via motorcycle and even a short ride on a tow truck but Kirby just is not well traveled.

I think we have a photo of Steve and Kirby around here somewhere but I can't find it at the moment. Will post it later when I do find it.

Yeah I can't stress how vivid and alive that Kirby is. And when THREE (yes three) FOBs were having their pic taken in the restaurant I could've sworn I heard Kirby out on the bike screaming MERCYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY  :D

Here's a few more pics. After the trip I went down to Naples for a few days...forgot to post up last few BS snapshots!

What do I like so much about BAT CAVE NC???

I like the fact all the locals roads rock without such as the tail of dragon hosts as of past couple of years (hardley-ablesons, car clubs, squids, tourists, etc)

Dunno wtf this thing was.

Glad to hear you are back and all is OK Steve. I was wondering where you were 'cause I would have thought you would have made it home much earlier.

Brian

Yeah I can't stress how vivid and alive that Kirby is. And when THREE (yes three) FOBs were having their pic taken in the restaurant I could've sworn I heard Kirby out on the bike screaming MERCYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY  :D

Here's a few more pics. After the trip I went down to Naples for a few days...forgot to post up last few BS snapshots!

Thanks and thanks again for the Rhode Island/Mystic, CT!  Yeah I didn't post up much from Naples, was busy visiting.  Did you or your wife post up the pics somewhere and i missed it by chance?  The 3 FOB pic, I need to remember all that good pow-ah in one spot on a table!

Hey, we had a great time and thank you for giving a call on the way by and taking the time out of your traveling.

Yep, I have that photo and several others. The photo of all the transponders has some kind of a smoky haze imprinted on it- maybe like a halo.  ;D Will post a couple tomorrow and send all of the via e-mail.
