US Coast Guard in Iran?
« on: January 13, 2012, 09:36:56 PM »
Whats up with that?

Quote
Navy officials said that in separate incidents on January 6, three Iranian speedboats — each armed with a mounted gun — briefly chased after a U.S. Navy ship just outside the Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter in the northern Gulf.

We send the Coast Guard all over the place...  It's a good question, though.   I have a nephew serving with the Coast Guard in MD and asked him the same question.  He didn't know why, either.  Seems strange to me.

Here's a link on possibly why..  http://usmilitary.about.com/od/coastguard/a/uscgwar.htm

In four years of service in the USCG. Two and a half on the USCGC Dallas, a few months with the Haitian Navy in Port Au Prince, Final year at Training Center Cap May. Our missions took us above the Arctic Circle, down to South America, the Carribean and over to Europe. Even made it to that little two day soiree in Granada.
In that time, I count countries visited as, Canada, Iceland, Greenland, Spain, France, England, Gibralter, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas, Venezuela, and Granada. In The US, Cape May NJ, Yorktown, VA, New York, NY, Curtis Bay MD, and Mayport FL. All done between Jan 81 - Feb 85.
So yeh, not all the shallow water sailors they are made out to be.  ;D

If you can make the argument that we can defend our borders from terrorist intruders from within Iraq and Afghanistan, you can certainly argue that our coastlines can be protected from within the straights of Hormuz.

Not that I'm opposed to sending the CG to the straights of Hormuz if it indeed protects our interests and there is an economic return.

I thought that's what the Navy was for.  I don't think we have any territories, States, in that area....at least for now.  I don't think we're short of ships...or are we?  Could it be a matter of manpower in that we are stretched so thin now that we need to send the Coast Guard?  Not trying to  :stirpot: , but it just seems strange to me.

As to what the OP was pointing out, I would use the Iranian Navy boats as Phalanx targets.  We're going to war sooner or later with them...  Course we could always say 'oops, my bad'.

We could be waiting until we build up more strength in the way of carrier battle groups.  We should have three in the area soon if not already.

I don't know... The USCG had a presence in Vietnam... Swift boats and cutters if memory serves me correct. River and coastal interdiction mostly... Something them boys is very good at!

The USCG can perform boardings of vessels under the guise of "safety inspections". The Navy can't without probable cause. The CG has had boarding teams on Navy ships for years.
