Hamas co-founder dies after accidentally shooting himself in face, militant group says

A co-founder of the terror group Hamas died Tuesday, three weeks after accidentally shooting himself in the face while cleaning his weapon, an official said.

Imad al-Alami, 62, was “examining his personal weapon in his home” Jan. 9 when the gun went off and a bullet struck him in the face, Hamas said.

He had been hospitalized in Gaza until his death, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Hamas initially announced al-Alami died of natural causes, dispelling rumors he'd committed suicide or was murdered. However, the group later admitted an accident had actually caused al-Alami's death.

Al-Alami held several key posts as a member of Hamas’ policy-making body and lived in Syria until 2012. He remained a top-ranking official, though not a member of the militant outfit's current staff.

After the 2014 Israel-Hamas war, al-Alami traveled to Turkey for treatment for an injury in which he lost a leg. Hamas said he was wounded in the war.

Score for one (possibly 3) for the lions!!!!

https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/05/world/south-africa-poachers-killed-trnd/index.html (https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/05/world/south-africa-poachers-killed-trnd/index.html)

Suspected poachers sneaked onto a South African game reserve to hunt rhinos, but a pride of lions found them instead.

A guide at the Sibuya Game Reserve spotted what appeared to be human remains on Tuesday near the group of lions, according to reserve owner Nick Fox. It was getting too dark to search the area, so police came back the next day with the reserve's anti-poaching unit and other specialists.

The remains were strewn over an area covered with thick brush and Fox said it was impossible to know how many people were killed.

Investigators did find three pairs of boots and three pairs of gloves.

They also found a high-powered rifle with a silencer, wire cutters and an ax that Fox said would have been used to remove a slain rhino's horns.

"We're almost 100% sure this is connected to rhino poaching," Fox said.

The six lions in the pride were tranquilized while the area was searched.

"Investigators and specialists combed the scene and managed to retrieve remains, which were taken by the Department of Health to conduct forensic testing. Investigation continues and at this stage we are unable to speculate as to how the remains ended up at the scene," South African Police Service Capt. Mali Govender said in a statement.

Fox said he thinks the poachers got onto the reserve on Sunday night or early Monday morning.

An anti-poaching dog signaled that it noticed something during a patrol about 4:30 a.m. and her handler heard a commotion from the lions. Lions are often active at night, so the noise didn't raise suspicions.

"The anti-poaching unit never suspected anything wrong because it was the lions making noise and not the rhinos," Fox said.

The poachers had a rifle, but they did not get off a shot before the lions took them down, Fox said.

"It was a bit of luck for us and not so much luck for them," he said.

The poachers were apparently on foot when they encountered the lions, which is very dangerous.

Fox said reserve staff and guests never go near the lions unless they're in big trucks.

He said they're watching the lions closely and they have shown no signs of being aggressive around vehicles.

Rhinos are endangered and are prized for their horns.

In 2016, poachers killed three rhinos at the Sibuya Game Reserve and hacked off their horns.

Fox said security was increased at the 25 square kilometer reserve in Kenton on Sea and installed more cameras to monitor the rhinos.

Mine too.

However, the group later admitted an accident had actually caused al-Alami's death.

Isn't it interesting how the Mossad can make an execution look accidental?
Even the Russians can't do that very well, try as they might.  ::)

Pretty happy about the lions eat poachers story ( good kitty!) but I wonder about those poachers. They went in to hunt rhinos (not me, actual badass, 5000lbs rhinos) but all 3 get eaten by lions?  Were they not prepared to encounter dangerous animals at all? Yes lions are badass as well but it's not like rhinos are tame. Sounds like a good candidate for the Darwin awards.

Since their demise was documented we can skip the nominations and and go right to the awards.   :)

Yeah, I love that the lions ate those a**holes.  Actually they DID eat their a**holes. ;D

The real big pisser is that the rhinos are being driven to extinction so a few mis-informed people can use their horns as an aphrodesiac, not knowing it is the same material as fingernails:

Unfortunately, it isn't a few people, but a WHOLE LOT of people, especially in Asia.  And it isn't just limited to fingernails... I mean rhino horn.  All kinds of wild animals are being killed to, or near to extinction, due to stupid, hocus-pocus.  Elephants, sharks, pangolins, tigers, buffalos, sun bears, musk deer, hawksbill sea turtles, Chinese alligators, and so many more for "decorative objects".  Then there is overfishing, habitat loss, pollution, noise...

I often think humans are a plague on the world.  How many are "enough"?  In just 200 years we went from less than 1 billion to 7 billion and on track for 11 billion by the end of this century.

I agree with you, Max.  In fact, I have a hard time disagreeing with just about any of your opinions (Except your opinion of the best color for the Concours!  I mean, silver is sooo boring!).  The sad truth is, it is in mankind’s nature to destroy himself.  It won’t happen in our lifetime, but eventually man will succeed in destroying this planet.

How’s that for optimism?  Enjoy your weekend!!

Wisconsin man's plan to 'upskirt' women ruined after shoe camera explodes: police

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/06/30/wisconsin-mans-plan-to-upskirt-women-ruined-after-shoe-camera-explodes-police.html (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/06/30/wisconsin-mans-plan-to-upskirt-women-ruined-after-shoe-camera-explodes-police.html)

A Wisconsin man who planned to use a “shoe camera” to capture footage under women’s skirts was injured when the camera battery exploded, the Madison Police Department said.

The man, a 32-year-old unidentified male, “purchased a shoe camera that he intended to use to take ‘upskirt’ videos of females,” according to a report from Madison Police Chief Michael Koval. Before the man was able to capture any footage, however, the camera battery exploded, injuring the man’s foot.      :rotflmao:

The incident reportedly occurred when he tested the camera at home, the Wisconsin State Journal reported. He was later treated for minor burns.

According to Koval, the man wanted to turn himself into police after he opened up to a clergyman about the incident. The clergyman, also unidentified, told the man to go to authorities and accompanied him to the police station.

Since no illicit video was taken, however, no action was taken against the man -- though authorities said they are still investigating.

In 2015, the Wisconsin State Assembly voted to make upskirting a felony.

Suspected rhino poacher is killed by an elephant and then eaten by lions in South Africa

https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/07/africa/south-africa-rhino-poacher-eaten/index.html (https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/07/africa/south-africa-rhino-poacher-eaten/index.html)

(CNN)Only a skull and a pair of trousers remained after a suspected rhino poacher was killed by an elephant and then eaten by lions in Kruger National Park, South African National Parks said.
The incident happened after the man entered the park with four others to target rhinos, according to a parks service statement released Friday.

His family were notified of his death late Tuesday by his fellow poachers, and a search party led by Kruger's regional manager, Don English, set out to recover the body. Rangers scoured on foot and police flew over the area, but due to failing light, it could not be found.

The search resumed Thursday morning and, with the help of added field rangers, what was left of his body was discovered.

"Indications found at the scene suggested that a pride of lions had devoured the remains leaving only a human skull and a pair of pants," the statement said.

Glenn Phillips, the managing executive of Kruger National Park, extended his condolences to the man's family.

"Entering Kruger National Park illegally and on foot is not wise, it holds many dangers and this incident is evidence of that," he warned. "It is very sad to see the daughters of the deceased mourning the loss of their father, and worse still, only being able to recover very little of his remains."

The four individuals who joined the illegal hunt were arrested Wednesday by the South African Police Service, and officers continue to investigate what happened.

The African rhino is targeted for its horn because of the belief among some who practice Eastern medicine that the horn has benefits as an aphrodisiac, making it more valuable than cocaine in parts of the world.

Of special concern is the black rhino, which is considered critically endangered after its population tumbled from about 65,000 to 1970 to 2,400 in 1995, according to Kruger National Park. Conservation efforts have since boosted their numbers, and the world's remaining 5,000 or so black rhinos live predominantly in South Africa, Namibia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

In 2016, there were between 349 and 465 black rhinos living at Kruger and between 6,600 and 7,800 white rhinos, who also suffer from poaching, South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs said.

Kruger is considered an intensive protection zone, and the government employs a range of resources to deter poaching, including aircraft, dogs, special rangers and an environmental crime investigation unit.

Of the 680 poaching and trafficking arrests made in 2016 by South Africa Police Services, 417 were in and around Kruger, the department said. In September, the department announced that six men -- including two syndicate leaders, two police officers and a former police officer -- had been arrested for trafficking in rhino horns.

The man who drew the ire of animal lovers after he was accused of causing the death of Pinky, a beloved Chilean flamingo at a Florida them park, has died.

Joseph Anthony Corrao, 48, was struck by a pickup as he crossed a road in Orlando, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Corrao was taken to a hospital, where he died June 5. The truck driver has not been cited, though authorities are investigating the incident.

Corrao was scheduled to go to trial in August on felony animal cruelty charges, according to court records.

In 2016, Corrao was visiting Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay with his family when he grabbed Pinky and threw her to the ground, nearly ripping one foot off, witnesses told police.

The 19-year-old flamenco-dancing bird received traumatic injuries and was euthanized.
