My 86 project is almost there!
« on: July 08, 2011, 06:32:39 PM »
Well I started My 86 Concours restoration project back in April 2010. It isn't/wasn't meant to be a perfect restoration. Just to bring her back to life from sitting in a garage for over 10 years, neglected. I brought her home on the trailer. I spent a little time here and there doing things. I would take pictures when I remembered to document the fun. Well I the bike is in pretty good shape now and I figured I would share some of the project. I uploaded some of the photo's to webshots, which I will include a link. (in case you want to see more pictures).
Anyway, the project started with the fuel system. cleaning and sealing the gas tank was the first project. So while it was apart, the tank got a new cap, sending unit/float, and petcock, as well as the sealer.
Next was the carburetors. They were pretty gummed up and nasty. So I went with option "B", which was replacing them. I found a set off a 2006 (they are suppose to have the drain tube mod). So I replaced the carbs rather than rebuilding them. It made it a little easier to go that route. While I had the carbs off, I sprayed a penetrating oil into the cylinders. I figured a little smoke is better than a dry start.
A new battery and fuel, and she fired right up. The probelm was she smoked a lot. So much that I was very concerned. So I shut her off and let her sit for a few minutes. Hoping the rings would re-seat properly. Well it worked. She stopped smoking and ran pretty good.
Well she got put away for the winter before I continued on. Well in the spring, she fired up, but runs rougher in the low rpms. So I guess the jets may be a little gunked up. So I put some carb cleaner in her and ran her. She's running better. But needs to run more. I would prefer not to have to open up the carbs, if I don't have to.
Anyway, she has since gotten some new parts, like plugs, hoses, mirrors, a new to me CeeBailey's windshield, Corbin, etc. A little cleaning up and she's looking pretty good. Yes there is more to do with her. But I figured she's far enough along, that she can show herself in public again.  So without further adieu. My 86 C10!

The rest of these photo's were today. Not done, but looking much better!

Looks great! Are those the stock exhaust cans? I have an 86 and it looks nothing like that! That baby shines.

No they're not. They are off a 2006. I have two sets of 86 cans. But I just like the chrome so much better, I had to change them when these became available!

It's absolutely amazing how relevant the style and shape of the bike still is, even today in '011...only when you see one right next to a C14 do you realize how old the C10 must be....

Yeah that's weird how my Canon camera does that. It's like in military date. It's actually saying that it is 8 July, 2011! I feel like I'm in the service again!  ;D

Well I started My 86 Concours restoration project back in April 2010.

Still needs some work.  It seemed awfully slow.   ;D

Nice job! Does this mean you may actually show up to a COG event, maybe even one of your own MnG's, on a Connie!?!
