squeak rolling backward
« on: August 02, 2022, 09:20:02 AM »
After a ride in the rain, my 08 Concours is making a rotational squeak, coming from the rear wheel area, when I walk it backwards. It does not squeak walking forward nor does it squeak rolling the rear wheel in either direction on the center stand. I just installed a new tire and went for a test ride. No noise backing out of the garage and nothing unusual noticed during the 60 mile ride. I am thinking I tweaked the rear rotor changing the tire and it is the rear brake squeaking. As always after mounting my tire I cleaned and examined the wheel bearing and nothing unusual there. I am really baffled why it only squeaks rolling backward.

Any ideas?

ps I just posted this on tghe other forum

I've had directional squeaking a few times from the brakes. Dunno why, but it happens. I verify it's the brake by very slightly dragging it while moving and it goes away. I've never had a brake squeak that lasted more than 100 miles or so.

Thanks for the reply. Actually while backing out of the garage yesterday, at first a very loud squeak but by the time I was ready to head forward it had stopped. I rolled back a few extra yards but silence. I did test by rear brakes once on the road but but just the usual weak sister rear brake.

Brake pads will sometimes squeak when rolled backwards, simply because they are rarely used in that direction.
The pad sticks to the rotor momentarily, releases, sticks, releases, etc. and does it fast enough to make a squeak.
I really wouldn't worry about it.
If you absolutely have to do something about it, remove and clean the rear caliper, bleed fresh DOT4 through the rear brake system, and fit new pads.

After going away for a day the backwards squeak came back with a vengeance. (I wish I could get in and out of my garage without rolling backwards, Jim,  but I can't, the 4 other bikes and ZTR are in the way).
Anyway, I am leaving for a 10 day trip and was concerned. I pulled the pads and verified they were  the source of the squeak. The inboard pad was slightly beveled at one corner. Also the red goo I use on the back to prevent squeal was black. I think that suggests overheating but I have checked for drag several time and nothing I can feel. I am going to try to check for a bent rotor. I welcome any other suggestions.

Any resolution yet ??

BTW :

When I first got my C-14 with 20K miles,  I noticed when I rotated the rear wheel ( bike on centerstand ) I heard a clicking sound.  I lubed the front spline on the driveshaft ( with moly paste, not moly grease ) and that eliminated the clicking sound.

The front spline wasn't dry but it didn't have much lube on it.  IMO lubing the front & rear driveshaft splines should be a regular maintenance item.  It's also an opportunity to check the driveshaft u-joints.

The squeak went away. I recall in the early days (07 or 08) reading on this forum or the other that people were hearing the click. There were also a couple reports of shaft bearing failures. Mine did not click but I went ahead and moly lubed my spline.
