Title: Boot Shopping
Post by: 2talltim on February 19, 2014, 05:37:44 PM
My old Joe Rocket Big Bangs have seen better days after 3 seasons, so time to upgrade. I'm looking for waterproof touring boots that will also work for everyday riding. Dont really need them insulated due to the fact that i'm a fair weather rider. Like to stay at or below $150( can go higher and hope to find them on sale or cheaper through Nate at RD). Let me know what y'all have or have tried or recommend. What works well on the connie?...AND GO!...................

Can't meet your price point.   :-\

My boots are also old and I will be replacing my Summer pair.

Winter, I wear Sidi Strada goretex with fluffy wool socks.

My Sidi Strada air, good to about 50 degrees and now seven years old, will be replaced with Sidi Cobra  Air.

With the perforations I don't expect them be as warm to the same temp but it's casual.

Daily rider. Commuting. Touring. Speeding through the country. :-!

I've found the boots for me!  ;-)

Happy shopping!

I have the Alpinestars "Web GoreTex" boots, which I got for $180 on sale.  Still above your suggested price but I love them.  Perhaps you can find a sale or something.  I think most places sell for less than the SRP.   I ride here in the Pacific Northwet and I've had them for about a year and a half, never leaked, warm enough for me, not to hot in the summer.

check out motorcyclegear.com and motorcyclecloseouts.com

You can get decent touring boots on clearance for $150, but once you've tried $300 boots it is hard to go cheap.  I was wearing the TCX infinity Gore-Tex boots when I got bucked off my dual sport and am very happy with the protection they provided.  They are also completely waterproof and comfortable.  I wear them on all my bikes.

Work boots for the dry, about $75, rubber boots for the wet, about $25. Frugal.

Protection 1st and foremost, comfort as a bonus.  And my $300 SIDI's can be serviced and resoled on the frugal forever, they're designed for it  ;D

True.  If you never wreck.  How much does foot surgery, and time off from work cost?
Of course if you never wreck, you don't need a helmet or gloves, jacket, or pants either.

$24,000 to set the small leg bone just above the ankle and plate and screw the ankle. That included the requiste therapy. Self employed so I still got payed about the same.

A big +1 to this!!!  :goodpost:

When I was younger I wrecked my Gixxer wearing some Nike hikers, broke my leg in 3 places, 2 of them compound, everything from the top of the hiking boot up for about 4 inches required a ton of skin repair work...  :'(

Ever since that day I always wear high quality motorcycle boots, gear is not a good place to go cheap IMO.

Oh, and by the way, Gumby left me for dead in a ditch and kept going... But I forgive him, but he really should be buying all my beers for the rest of my life...  :o ;) ;D :grouphug: :chugbeer:

I'm on my second pair of these. The first pair, the stitching came loose in a couple of places on the right boot, left leaked like a sieve. The second pair, warranty replacements for the first pair, the right boot is good, left has a small leak.

They are comfortable, for walking and riding, seem to have protection, and light weight. I like 'em, their quality just really sucks.

Still better than most flip flops, though. ;)

Save your money.

We always take chances riding. If someone feels it is necessary to buy all the gear possible then more power to them. I may be lucky, but out of the three accidents I have been in, over 36 years, boots really didn't contribute to protection. It was always the helmet and jackets. I always wear a jacket, helmet and gloves. The rest are blue jeans and either leather boots or my hiking boots. I do not feel under protected and beyond that I have good insurance.

My good friend Tom got wiped out on the freeway last Thursday on his Wee-Strom.  A guy "lost control" of his car, slid across Tom's lane, hit the barrier, spun back and pushed him over.  At about 60 MPH.  His Shoei RF1100 took a small hit on the left side, his Aerostich suit got a small tear in the left bicep, his Aerostich Combat boots got some abrasions but other than a couple of small bruises, he's fine.  Bike/luggage got a little bent and some ground-off corners.

Did his gear pay for itself?  I don't know, but his wife, daughter, and I are glad he was protected.

I believe they had two versions.  (high and low)
Really solid sole and thick padded leather.    more than 5 years of use and they
are still functional and comfortable.   I only had to put a dab of crazy glue on the
stitching to stop it from fraying.

I most likely would have broken my foot legs and ankles many times by now with out proper boots.
My Joe Rocket track boots are busted up pretty bad after my last track crash and now I am doing more off road.
The track boots wont be enough so I bought Gaerne SG-10's and Klim's new covert  waterproof socks.
Inexpensive cheap boots will not protect you nor will they last and cannot be resoled.

Tim,  there are guys who have wrecked without wearing helmets and never hit their heads.  There will always be examples of where a certain part of the body had no impact during a crash.  Unfortunately, your logic is flawed.  What you should look at is if you foot gets caught between the bike and the road, or pipe and road, or bike and car, will a quality boot save you from injury?  Same with quality riding pants.  I wouldn't say you were lucky.  You had three accidents during your riding career.  I have ridden over 100,000 miles in the last four years alone and over my 32 years of riding have only had one street bike accident.  Hit from the side by a jeep Cherokee when I was 28.  Caught my foot at the fuel tank while I was trying to bail off the bike.  Helmet never got a scratch.  Heavy leather boots kept the damage to soft tissue damage that kept me off my foot for 3 weeks.

My big bangs served their purpose when i bought them i was short on cash a i bought them used(like new) on ebay for $40. They are too wide for sport riding( i was always dragging the side of the boot where it hung out past the peg. And where your foot flexes with all bending your foot does(while riding with ball of foot on peg) mine work a good sized hole in them. They are heavy and really not that comfortable to walk in. But for was i had in them i was satisfied, if i would have paid new price i'd prob be a little pissed. I accually liked the buckle it kept the laces tucked away

I have used several different boots...my favorite is Harley Davidson Sonic...just remove the silly metal tag. These boots are very comfortable, warm, keep my feet dry and are easy squeezy to put on (laced up the front, zipper up the side)

Picked up a pair of the A_stars Web Gortex today, they fit great and are plenty comfy. My local motorcycle super store had a pair on the clearance rack in my size and as a added bonus i told them about a online price and the matched that after tax for me which was $170 out the door. It was between them and a pair of icon region's, the icons were nice too but not goretex and when i tried the left foot on i accuall broke the zipper on them so that kinda made up my mind. I also picked up a pair or A_stars Radiant Drystar  gloves on the clearance rack too for $35 so it was a good shopping day. Thanks for all the info and tips you guys rock.

I wear these boots every month for drill they're great to walk around in, but other than ankle support, they're just like tennis shoes as far as protection goes. Im in a light field artillery unit that moves A LOT when we go to the field, and I've kicked a few rocks in the craphole known as yakima training center setting equipment up, and that usually hurts like a mofo. Cant imagine a crash feeling much better.

Still better than the Nike's i normally wear on the bike cause money is tight at the moment ... :( I really want the web goretex, and a pair of good low-cut boots for the summer...

YOu are in much better shape than we......I was in Lancaster this weekend....great saturday with some bikes on the road...only to come home to Muncie Sunday and find that there is still ice the length of the driveway and a 3 foot drift between the house and the back barn. No way the bike is getting through the drift or down the drive. I really believe there is still gravel somewhere underneath all that chit.

Walked around the house with them on for a good 30-40 minutes while my girlfriend laughed at me. Thanks Mike

i have sidi boots, 3 pairs, but my favorite are the stradas,,, lightweight, waterproof and after 11 years i had them resoled and had one of the zippers replaced. The boots look almost like new. Not bad for the 200.00 i paid for them.
