Title: Another stab at a Coast to Coast in 50 hours, this time heading east
Post by: B.D.F. on June 23, 2012, 07:42:57 PM
So I am going to try it again on the way home- a Coast to Coast in 50 hours between Ocean Shores, WA and Rye, NY, starting Monday morning (25 June 2012). Several changes made to the bike while on the west coast in order to make the timed run going back a little bit slicker- added a temporary aux. fuel cell (there is an entire story in itself right there but not for this post), highway pegs, and a new helmet- Nolan N103 (the old helmet had a leaking visor, as well as a badly fogging visor). Of course I should not have made any of these major changes just before a long trip so if it proves to be a mistake it is all on me.

The route will start in Tacoma, WA and end in RI but the timed portion of the ride will be between Ocean Shores, WA and Rye, NY. This is the planned route:

As usual I will have SPOT with me and on but this time I will send an 'yellow flag' each time I get fuel. That should make it easy for everyone to follow the timing; normal marks on the route will be orange and uploaded about every twenty minutes or so. The yellow colored marks will indicate fueling stops, and if I abandon the trip I will leave a green "OK" mark to let everyone know that I am fine but have abandoned the timed run. Bear in mind that I have increased fuel capacity of the bike (hopefully... sigh) so I <should> be able to go something like 300 miles between fuel stops. This is the link for the SpotWalla link to follow my progress:

As it stands I'll be there to see ya off for sure, we'll see how far I'll go, Spokane is scratched for sure.  I'll do a work up on the aux tank in another thread, but lets just throw a teaser out there, it's a mini epic undertaking to say the least.  Me thinks we should hook up a pyromoter to the spot ;D

Good luck.

Hope the new Nolan doesn't prove too tight and squeeze your brains out through your ears and nose. My last new helmet gave me headaches I would thought could ony be associated with a cerebral hemorrage. ???

I will be following you on spotwalla.

Funny you mention that- I wore the Nolan for a time today and it squeezed my head enough to cause my jaw to hurt. I guess the Nolan won't be making the trip east, at least not on my head :-(  Back to HJC for me.... they fit like I was the model for the size and shape. I am currently using a SY- MAX II so if the III holds the same sizing, it should fit me very well.

Brian

Good luck.

Just about packed and loaded, and after I get my gear I will be headed west to Ocean Shores. I am meeting Chet there so maybe he will upload a photo or two- perhaps a photo of me telling the 'cat joke' to the Pacific. :-)  Then probably a quick, light lunch, stock up on water and fuel and point east. I should be back in two days or so.

Just found this thread.  Good luck to ya Brian!

I wish the weather had been a little better up that way, and my work schedule a little less demanding.  I wanted to ride up north to see your project.

I figured you must be getting a late start, since I just checked the Spot page, and it says you haven't left yet.

Chet, keep him out of that horrible traffic up there, so he doesn't spend the first 10 hours just getting to the snow on Snoqualmie Pass.   :)

Maybe with enough escort riders, he'll make it this time.  Anymore volunteers out there, to pick up where Chet has to turn back?

Yep, using a late start here so I do not get to the coast in NY during rush hour Wed. I am crossing the Hudson well north of the city but that area still gets pretty congested- if I leave Ocean Shores around 12:00 or a bit later, I should arrive in NY after rush hour has passed.

Chet already saved my bacon by having me check Snoqualmie for blasting which I was unaware of. There IS blasting this morning but it ends at 9:00 and I won't be there until the afternoon so I should be fine. Assuming they don't have an oopsie and blast a hole in the middle of the road of course :-)

Thanks for the well wishes and I should be back on the forum in a couple of days.

SPOT's been activated and he's making his way to the west coast! AT Ocean Shores (I think) he'll get his pacific water,  hang with Chet for a moment (hopefully get some pics!), then get his timed receipt.... I'll talk to him next after he's gotten that and is back on the road heading east.....I'll keep you all posted!

So, I just made it home!  We started moving at 1300 sharp, dern gas station receipt tried cheating him of almost an hour so we moved to another station to get the start receipt fixed.  We rolled right on past Ft Lewis and I departed his slip stream at 1447.  He was in awesome spirits and sure appeared well rested.  I'll post up pics from the ocean, gas station and a couple while we were rolling.  I am deeply concerned that that Sturgis stop may have polluted him, seriously.  He has HIGHWAY PEGS :o
Anrea, if ya need anything or if Brian needs anything ya have my number, I'll be around till early Wednesday then I'll be in cell free land.  Don't hesitate.

Thanks so much Chet for getting the pics,  can't wait to see them!  Once again he does seem to be in a great frame of mind ....which I guess is one of the more important things you would need for this type of endeavor.

Thanks once again for being there for both of us, it means a great deal!

Your'e quite welcome.  If you speak with Brian in the next 15 minutes or so let him know the town is Ellensburg ( I had a brain fart, wanted to tell him where the states biggest speed trap is).

I just tried him, but it went right to VM, he's either in a spot with no service, or could be on the other line....not sure... :-\
he's generally very cautious about his speed though....One oopsie will blow the ride....so I'm sure he'll be ok....

thanks though!

Gret pics Chet, thanks!!!  And you do all realize I'm sitting here laughing to myself, watching him tell me the "CAT" Joke!!!  OMG! He knew I would when I saw him too I'm sure.....hehehe....  I really hate that I'm so predictable....

Anyway, I'll be calling him again shortly, but last we spoke he was just getting ready for a fuel stop, .he had been on the road for 4 hours, 224 miles.  All was well at the time, he was cruising along at 72 (you had him a bit nervous about speed along there).

We discovered also, when we were figuring the times coming into NY, we were doing the time change backwards, so he should have left earlier...he's gonna come into RYE at about 4-5pm....not so great...oh well, nothing can be done about that now!

You should be able to see a custom yellow flag showing at the fuel stop (don't know why the first one didn't work).

Normally he tanks up while sitting on the bike.  Now with the new aux tank, he has to actually get off the bike to fill it, so he thinks it may be slowing him down more than the time saved by having that extra fuel......hmmm...dissapointing I would say.

‎331 miles, 2722 mile to go...avg speed 59

sun's just starting to set

all is well...

His first fuel stop was about 300 miles. After that the fuel stops have been only about 200 miles. Is he having trouble with the auxiliary fuel tank.

Not sure if he's having trouble but part of his plan was to give it a try and then keep it as a reserve.

Post by: andreaF on June 26, 2012, 08:25:37 AM
correct...no trouble at all...... he just feels he was using more time by getting off the bike to fill that tank, then he does stopping every 200 miles.  He can pull in, swipe his card and fill up VERY quickly.  As you said he now has it as a reserve should the need arise.

Spoke to him last on my commute, so couldn't write any stats down......but he did say his avg speed is climbing, which is great, he'll need it!

Latest update...in South Dakota it's clear & sunny but HOT...it's down to about 88 from 102!!!  those supposed tail winds don't seem to be with him though....mileage is down to 38mpg :(

He's figuring he should soon have a "Bun Burner Gold" under his belt (1500miles in 24hrs)! 8)

1388 miles; 20hrs 28mins; 67.7 avg speed

He feels great, all is well!

he's half way there!

1520 miles; 22hrs 16min; 68.2 avg speed

he's gonna have to short tank the next stop to be sure he gets the BBG cert...
its still hot, he's passed lots of construction and is currently stuck behind a truck going 52 and has been for sometime....
he was a bit aggravated by it all.....  :(

But still feeling well and in general doing great!

I believe he should be dropping down to I-29S in Sioux Falls, then hopping on I-80E for most of the remainder, which is what he'll be on thru Chicago.

Unless something comes up that would cause him to detour...at this moment he's not anticipating any problems with that plan.

He should have a solid BBG!  1590 miles in 23.5 hours!!!  ;D

Still stuck in lots of heavy contruction really slowing him down and it's VERY windy...could barely hear him, so the conversation was cut very short... :( so until next time.

He will hit some road construction on Interstate 80 west of Interstate 35 for about 10-12 miles my brother said. 1 lane in both directions @ 55mph or so. Good luck with the rest of the trip.

He's at the 1780 mile mark;   he's been at it for 26.5 hours and he's avg 67.5 mph  booya!!  ;D

It's proven quite tedious at times between the construction & the wind.....apologies to the few folks who have called and he just couldn't answer......   There's been a few of our calls where I just get the stats from him & that's it....it has not be pleasant for him chit chatting for some time now....  and I imagine it will get somewhat worse as he tires.  We shall see!

I've passed along all you're well wishes, thanks to you all!!!

Now the hard part begins the 2nd 24 hours......

1948 miles; 29hrs 7mins; avg speed 67mph!!  :-*

aside from construction everywhere....his biggest issue lately has been his fuel stops....closed stations & such; not much available on the highway.... that should change as he comes further east and they become much more plentiful.  However, with that said, he has had 75mins of "stop time" with 10 stops....so he's avg'd 7.5 min per stop.  Some of those stops he's gone inside to stock up on water & such.   So he's making great time as far as that goes, imo.

the temps are finally dropping, it's cooler, dry and the winds are gone.  Now as the sun is setting, his eye's will be peeled for Bambi (the forrest rat).

OK folks....getting down to the wire....  he has 327 miles to go AND he may be able to make it on his current tank, meaning no more stops!  That would bring him into RYE at about 2:48 barring any traffic jams, or other delays.

He's got 2770 miles under his belt; been at it for about 44hours; ave speed is 65.7   8)

If anyone is able to meet him...please take pics!!!!

You may have seen the spot stop....I just got off the phone with Brian and here's the deal....he's ok at the moment, but was not feeling well, lightheaded and just felt "funny" as he put it, so he's pulled off the road and is resting.

He's waiting to get checked out by medics at the moment, and has no desire to get back on the bike.  I'm sure a combination of heat, no sleep & a small amount of dehydration thrown in there is what was talking to him.

I'll let you all know when I hear from him again.......
so close........

All thinking of him and wishing him well. Hope he can continue, but not if he has to risk his life to do so. What is he, about 250 miles short?

thanks for the well wishes and yes, just about 250 left to go..... But is he is a very cautious person and wouldn't push himself unnecessarily.

I don't imagine he'll be finishing the ride....I could imagine a possiblity of a ride to the local hospital & a bike tow...then he'll deal with coming home another day.... But this is me guessing, as I'm still waiting to hear what the medic's say......

hmmm... if memory serves me he left at 12:53pst so that's 3:53est so it 50hrs would be 5:53pm   however, when I talked to him, he felt it was irrelevant...had no desire to get back on the bike at the moment..... we shall see.

I'm glad he wasn't so exhausted that his judgement failed him.  It'll be good to hear he's back home safe and sound, even w/o another scalp hanging from his belt.

Sort of.... it has finally taught me not to be abusive and totally negligent about my own needs on such a demanding trip. I really do not know what happened but I did suffer some kind of physical breakdown, whether it was heat, heart or hydration related. I did not stop due to a smart decision, I stopped simply because I could not continue. I first stopped on the side of I-80, changed some of the gear I was wearing and tried to continue but I didn't make much distance at all before stopping and giving the PA emergency network a workout (911).

But so as not to make this story too morbid, allow me to digress a bit- while in WA, Chet gave me the Pacific Northwest version of a lucky rabbit's foot and it looks like this: (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f82/BDF08012008/P1010013.jpg)

It looks like a whitetail deer hoof but much, much larger. It is an elk's hoof (which is why I call it Mr. Elkhoof) and I strapped it to the back of the bike for the ride home. It is much more lucky than any rabbit's foot (look at the size of it) and it seems to ward off all members of the deer family (the proof is that I did not hit a single forest rat on the way home. In addition to that, it seems to have strange and mystical power much like KiPass.

It is a long story but my bike was towed from where I left it (via ambulance) to a local impound yard. When picking up the bike the  next day, Bob (tow company employee) asked me what in the hell that was strapped to the bike. Apparently he was down on his knees running a nylon web sling through the wheels WHEN SUDDENLY he looked up and was staring right at Mr. Elkhoof- it surprised him enough that he jumped back and fell down. All hail the elk foot.... So now I have my all- powerful talisman to mount to the bike and ward off any and all evil that KiPass itself cannot deal with. By the way, it worked on the EMT too because he was kind enough to grab as much of my gear as possible (including all GPS's, SPOT, the entire top box, etc.- what a great bunch of people!) but he said he wasn't comfortable picking up 'that foot- thing'. ROFLMAO

The only problem I had on my leisurely trip out west two years ago, was a charlie horse in my leg that put me on the ground in agony.  It wouldn't stop and I though I would have to call the hotel desk to get an ambulance.  It was that bad.  I attribute that to the heat and not drinking or stopping enough.  That convinced me that long arduous trips on a bike in the heat aren't worth the potential physical after effects.

We're all glad you still had enough sense to stop when you did and call for help.  I'm not so sure that I would have that same sense being that close to home relatively speaking.

And BTW? You may want to rethink mounting your new lucky charm to your bike anytime soon. I'd say that the luck wasn't working so well on you. On the flip side of that argument. Maybe what happened to you was good luck, perhaps something else might have happened without the foot?

Glad you are OK. I won't push my limits anymore either. I have to blame age a little. I worked 64 hours last week while running the bike to work and back (about 200 miles per day). Thursday I was at lunch and started cramping up all over and should have called it a day. Worked another 6 hours and rode home. Had to stop 7 or 8 times on my ride home. I should have V-lined to an ER, but big tough guy had to go home. I saw my muscles do thinks I never thought possible. I had muscles pushing through my rib cage.. Evert muscle I have was in serious pain and freezing up. So I got stuck taking the cage for the next 2 days. 1 week later and I still feel beat up.
I hope you didn't have any of those feelings.

I think Mr. Elkhoof was a perfect lucky charm- I didn't have a single deer strike for the entire ride and that is enough for me. But the hoof went on and protected my abandoned bike from vandals, and there wasn't so much as a scratch on it after being lifted in a pair of slings onto the tow truck.

And I am not normally a morbid person- in fact, I could probably use a little bit more morbidity now and then.

Brian

Well I may push my limits again in the future but I will never again be downright abusive to myself. It is one thing to press and try to acheive something that is difficult but it is quite a different thing to be downright foolish while doing so. I was badly dehydrated and that was absolutely my own fault for not drinking nearly enough water even in the 102 degree F heat of South Dakota. And I was avoiding water to avoid having to stop and use the facilities along the way- as I said, stupid on my part.

It sounds like you did escape the worst of it though so in an odd way your experience is probably just a fortunate and <fairly cheap> warning. That is how I am taking my experience- a significant but relatively cheap lesson. It is one thing to push a machine (mechanical or biological) and expect a lot from it but it is another thing entirely to be abusive- running a biological machine (us) without sufficient attention is identical to running a mechanical machine (the bike) without crankcase oil. That is not being tough, that is just being stupid and abusive.

Best of luck in your recovery. I feel pretty lousy today myself but it is a good, normal kind of lousy (tired and sore) which is a tremendous improvement over the lousy of the last couple of days.

Brian

They are the best of friends and have never made any movement whatsoever to move apart! It amazed me because there are so many differences, different species, different accents (Kirby originates in the East while Mr. Elkhoof was from the Pacific Northwest), different ages (Kirby is much younger) different diets, etc., etc. But the two of them get along like two frozen peas in a pod- they are nearly inseperable.

Here they are just hanging out:

Here they are leaning against each other for support: (this is also their riding mode, pointed into the wind for less wind resistance)

Nah, Kirby is tough.  That is the wrist band that he had to wear to be in the group photo at the Spring Fling. Cap'n Bob said that only banquet guests should be in the photo so Kirby ponied up (pardon that expression) and got hisself a banquet ticket and indentifying wrist band. He was so happy with it that I have not had the heart to take it off of his 'wrist' yet.

Here is Kirby at the Spring Fling enjoying a refreshing cup of Del's lemonade (local drink):

A few photos taken during the failed legs of the trip:

This is where I get the Atlantic water at the start of the ride, Kirby Lane in Rye, NY <chuckle>:

This was about the half- way point of the ride west when I bailed out- I got caught in the storm while fueling and moved the bike up to this overhang in front of a closed restaurant to wait it out:

The storm was kinda' nasty and it wasn't in any particular hurry to clear, the rain was heavy but what actually stopped me was the gigantic hail that I did not think I could ride through at highway speeds:

This is Chet and I at the Pacific at the start of the ride back. I know it is off center but I put the camera in my top box and wedged it against some stuff:

I am still trying to do a write- up on the failed ride home. Will post it when it is done.

The better read was the one where I made it but that went in the great foumnami of 2011 :-(

Have Mr. Elkhoof? Of course! He rides with me everywhere up on the top of the top box so he can enjoy the view. He is still making new friends.

Hanging out with Kirby....

By the way, this is a photo of me holding my Rye, NY and Ocean Shore, WA recipts outside of the store in Ocean Shore at the end of a coast- to- coast run (the successful one in just under 48 hours). The fatigue is obvious but I am standing on my hind legs like my ancestors :-)

Apparently Mr Elkhoof has become an almost indestructible chew toy.
