another handling question
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:08:38 PM »
So the other day I am ambling along at about 55mph and take my hands off the bars.. The front wheel starts to wooble like crazy.. I grab it and it stops?? Riding my mountain bike down hill at the close to the same speed no hands and the wheel is dead smooth! First time I have ever done that on my motorcycle so not sure if there is something there I should look into? The bike handles nice otherwise? The front tire is just better than half done, might be pressure low by a pound? Any comments or advice would be nice..  :)

- worn wheel bearings and/or worn neck bearings.

- get the front wheel off the ground and shake it. Find where the play comes from.

Most likely, your steering head bearings need adjustment.  They get loose (come from the factory loose, too) and cause the problem you describe.

Had the same issue with my Connie when I first got it.  Adjusted the steering head bearings and now it is solid with no hands at any speed.

What front tyre are you running? Avon Storms are known to do this, mine does. And yes the steering bearings are tight. The wobble only started as soon as I fitted the Avon and I have since tightened the bearings a bit more but it has not made any difference. Do a search and you will find quite a bit on this on many different bikes.

It seems I never get a bad one. I've worn out about a dozen Avon Storms and Avon Storm Ultras, I've had one very slight instance of Headshake amongst the lot. Readjusted the steering head bearings and that went away. The bike has tapered steering head bearings not ball bearings. The tapered bearings have to be a little tighter. If you leave the bearings loose very long, you will be replacing them.

I heard the same story about the Avon Azaros, I wore out a bunch of them. I never had a trace of headshake or wobble. It's funny,
even though I've used more than 30 of the Avon fronts, I just can't manage to get one of the bad ones.
