Title: How often do people replace their air filter?
Post by: katata1100 on April 04, 2013, 02:45:11 PM
With most of my mileage being high speed touring, I wonder how dirty the filter is- original filter now at 14,717 miles.

This was mine at about 15,000 miles.  The sun is behind the filter.

Damn, that's filthy! How long did it take to replace it?
I have a '11 C14.

Is that a dog or goat in the background or some other critter?

I think that it's time man! How long it takes depends on how often you've had your plastic off. If you're comfotable taking it off then it won't take long. If you've never had it off before, well, it might take a bit of time. It's a nice afternoon project. Have you changed your coolant? It would be a good time for that while you have the plastic off.

Replaced mine, pretty dirty at 12,300. I live in the north east  and the roads still are a little dirty for the long winter.

About 10 minutes taking my time.  No need to remove the side plastics to remove it.  Just remove the black piece on top and remove a bracket and it slides right out.

I went to the K&N at 10k miles on my 08 and clean it every other oil change (10k).  It usually looks like Cable Bandit's at that point.  I also do much high speed touring, year round, in the Pacific Northwest.  Desert - mountains  - rain!

Mine are still good at 25K   :D   :D   :D

This filter was at the top of the Rockies, offroading in Arizona desert, Vegas, offroading in Moab, Utah, chasing Brisket in TX, blistering OK, and all over the blue ridge mountains
Southeast USA, and a few days in Key West, FL.

To the left of the gas tank as you look down from above.  You have to remove the plastic tank cover to take it off so I guess technically you'll remove two pieces.

You got me fixated on "chasing Brisket in TX...". I usually chase after microbrew on my C14, you just gave me something different to think about!
I live in N.NV, one of the windiest, dustiest places in the U.S., I am not optimistic about the condition of my filter at 13717 miles, but we'll see...

If you want to know how to change it yourself, you could always look in the Wiki section ...

I replaced mine yesterday, I think I did it slightly different from other methods on my '11 bike.
1) Remove the three allen bolts that hold that plastic cover on the tank.
2) Remove the allen bolts holding side fairing. You don't need to remove it, just loosen the bolts and pull fairing away so you can get your hand through under the frame to yank out filter.
3) Remove three bolts that hold black trim and glove box.
4) Remove two bolts that hold filter aluminum strip
5) pull out relays out of foam thingy that is next to tank.
6) relay bracket, just remove one bolt and push the thing to the front of bike as you pull out filter.
I have never done this before, took me about 25 minutes. No need to mess with the position of the shield, no pop rivits to remove.
Bike idles better, feels smoother and more powerful. My theory is that if you have a four cylinder car, the C14 filter probably will last 25%-50% as long as the filter in that car. I say that because the engines are sort of close in size, but the C14 is inky dinky compared to what is in my cars, looks more like a filter for a large lawnmower than a bike, with small pleats and small overall size. The thing was pretty dark, no flies or strange bugs smacked in it, but just black looking. On my last trip last month, my mileage was down from I usually get, even in eco mode and I bet it will be better now with a clean filter. The dealer wanted $43 for the thing, next time, I'll either try to source aftermarket paper or even consider cotton gauze (no K&N vs paper arguments, please).

Did mine once at about 22,000. Put a K&N in it. I now have about 34,000 miles and will probably clean the K&N in the next few weeks.

Back in 2007 when I lived in South Texas and rode into Mexico every day I cleaned this pile of dirt out of the air filter on my 06 CBR1000RR at 12K miles.  After that I started checking it afterevery oil change.

Change the air filter every 18,000 miles, but with inspections every 6 000 miles.
I walk the streets with good bottom.

I've replaced mine twice at slightly over 20k miles, and both times it was too dirty.  I'll have to shorten that interval to about 15k, which means this fall, if the snow ever melts here in MN.  I did ride about 40 miles on Saturday in 36 F heat :o to get my bike to the trailer taking us to Austin for this weekends MotoGP.  It was worth it.

Don't know how you are able to get the filter out with the outer plastic in the way.  On my 08 it didn't seem like there was anyway to do it.  Maybe my hands are too big or I'm klutzy.

I don't know of a way to remove it on the 08/09 models without taking the upper tupperware on the left side off.  However, it doesn't take that long once you've done it a few times.

I screwed up, after I posted I had the perfect edit and then was late for work and forgot to change it.  It was meant to read:

"Your filter performs well, don't let it get away!"

8.5 years, 43,428miles.  Here is the photo.  Dirty, for sure.  But not as bad as I thought it might be- I can still see light through it with a flashlight.  Most of the discoloration is on the leading edges of the folds, it is much cleaner further down into the pleats. Even so, this was considerably overdue.
