Title: Congrats to SpaceX!
Post by: Conrad on February 07, 2018, 04:29:46 AM
An incredible accomplishment! Not just the perfect launch of the main rocket but the return, with precision, of two of the side boosters to the landing pads.

If you didn't see it yesterday you really should watch, it gave me goosebumps!

Tesla Motors, SolarCity, and SpaceX—a few of his highest-profile projects—have relied heavily on government subsidies. According to a 2015 article in the Los Angeles Times, these three companies "together have benefited from an estimated $4.9 billion in government support."Apr 28, 2016

You're such a Debbie Downer..   However, I do have one criticism of the the event.  They were posting speed and altitude in metric.  Metric doesn't mean s**t to me.  Also, the Saturn V was larger, faster, carried more payload, more manly, carried passengers, and made more smoke.  Yes, Spacex has reusable boosters.   I mean what next, going to Mars, picking up some Martians and bringing them back here to kill us all?   Any why on Earth, is he sending Tesla vehicles to Mars?  He can't sell them here?  Is it cheaper to build Tesla's on Mars with Martian labor?  They are the new immigrants and I can say I certainly don't like this new turn of events. >:(

I know it was just a test but why not put a useful payload on it anyway?

And G, I agree with you about Mr Musk but I wonder if they still did it for a bargain compared to today's NASA.

Did the center stage land correctly on the ship? Wonder what the weather/wave/wind envelope is to do that. I would think the ship cannot be rocking too much for that.

not sure where it hit but one of the rockets failed and it ploughed in at speed according to the reports Ive heard

The center core was only able to relight one of the three engines necessary to land, and so it hit the water at 300 miles per hour about 300 feet from the drone ship. As a result, two engines on the drone ship were taken out when it crashed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a press call after the rocket launch. “[It] was enough to take out two thrusters and shower the deck with shrapnel,” he said.

Today's NASA is a cesspool of political climate change correctness and couldn't go into space on a billion dollar bet. Should have had a shuttle replacement ready. Instead they give the American built space station to the Russians.
And screw Mars...we should be industrializing the moon. Supposedly has ice/water which means O2. It's out of the Earths gravity strongest well. yada yada yada

And on that positive note, the launch took me back to 4th grade where we took time out of the school day to watch the launch activities.   Good to see a rocket (US) of size take off from Kennedy again.

What's also interesting to me is the naming of the Falcon 9 using the word 'heavy'.   Back in the 50's the AF used that term on the big boy recon and bomber wings.   For instance, my dad was a crew chief at Ellsworth AFB on the RB-36.   28th SRW, Heavy.  SRW for you youngsters is Strategic Reconnaissance Wing.

I really don't care where Elon gets his money from.  I'm glad my taxes helped support his efforts in space, cars, and solar technology.   At least he's got something to show for it, unlike NASA at the moment who's still piddling with the Mars effort.  I do agree that we should start using the Moon for bases, industrial mining and cheese (not necessarily in that order).

I'm also wondering why we haven't developed the technology to build the rockets in space or the moon where they don't require as much fuel to head to their destinations.

you still need to get all the components (including the fuel) up there so that in itself requires fuel.....

At the time, the car was 493,000 km (306,000) away, not far beyond the orbit of the Moon, receding from Earth about 3.7 km/s (8,300 mph). Reflecting sunlight, it shone about as brightly as a 16th magnitude star.

AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS PHOTOGRAPH ROADSTER IN SPACE: It's official. Elon Musk's cherry red Tesla Roadster is a spacecraft. NASA is now listing the electric car in its database of celestial objects with an ephemeris for tracking it available on JPL's Horizons web site.

Using that ephemeris, along with a remote-controlled telescope in Siding Spring, Australia, amateur astronomer Adriano Valvasori photographed the Roadster on Feb. 8th. It is the faint speck circled in red:

Well, he was born in the Transvaal, South Africa.  He has South African, Canadian, and US citizenship (as of 2002).  So I'm thinking that your suggestion on deporting and seizing his assets probably won't work.

Personally I don't think he's any worse than any business entity these days.   Yes, he does get tax incentives but then quite a few other businesses wanting to build their plants in different states do as well.

Whatever he's doing for the space program and the US in general is ok by me.  Cost of the Falcon 9 Heavy launch is less than a 100 Million dollars.  Cost of one shuttle launch is nearly a Billion.

So Conrad, the stage one boosters, landed back at the cape successfully, the stage 2 booster (or main booster) had a malfunction and went in the drink and caused minor damage to the recovery drone (robotic floating landing pad..I think) and the third stage eventually boosted the car towards hopefully a successful Mars orbit (someday). <--did I get that all correct?

THE ROADSTER AND THE STAR CLUSTER: Elon Musk's cherry red Tesla Roadster is doing things no electric car has ever done before. On Feb. 6th it left Earth onboard a Falcon Heavy Rocket. On Feb. 8th it crossed the orbit of the Moon. Yesterday, the Roadster paid a visit to a star cluster:

"I captured this series of photos from my cozy home office in New Jersey using a remote-controlled 0.5-meter telescope at the Chilescope observatory a few hours north of Santiago, Chile," says Michael Keith. "The Roadster was at a distance of 3.7 million km from Earth--a new record! Although it is was very dim (about magnitude 19.8) I wanted to try to capture it because it was close in the sky to a nice globular star cluster: NGC 5694 is much farther away than the Tesla Roadster, alnost 115,000 light years from Earth."

Since NASA published orbital elements for the Roadster on Feb. 8th, amateur astronomers have been tracking the electric car, with groups leapfrogging over one another in an effort to capture the most distant photo of this unique spacecraft. Among photos submitted to Spaceweather.com, Keith's is the record holder. For reference, 3.7 million km is almost 10 times farther from Earth than the Moon. This record will surely fall as astrophotographers around the world continue tracking the interplanetary Roadster. Whether anyone can take a more beautiful photo than Keith did, however, remains unknown. Stay tuned.

What happens when the astronaut runs out of air?  I mean, I can understand an electric car running in space, no engine you know.  But the astronaut is going to run into serious problems at some point.

What happens when the astronaut runs out of air?  I mean, I can understand an electric car running in space, no engine you know.  But the astronaut is going to run into serious problems at some point.

Dude! The Tesla is a roadster. The top is down and the driver is enjoying the (solar) wind.  :)

Besides, he has a space suit on and from what I hear, he doesn't breathe all that much.

http://spaceweather.com/ (http://spaceweather.com/)
it is was very dim (about magnitude 19.8)

I suppose it wouldn't have been as interesting for the near Earth photos, but I wonder what it's magnitude would be now if they had painted it all white.

I also wonder if any extra bracing or other reinforcement was required to handle the g- forces so that we wouldn't see pieces of windshield trim, gas cap flipped open, or side mirror dangling, etc. hanging off of the car. I have to believe that the dummies left arm is fairly well fastened down to the top of the door despite it's casual just resting there appearance.

I guess what we are seeing is actually all of  this: (http://space.skyrocket.de/img_sat/tesla-roadster__2.jpg)

...and not just a car by itself.

What would a charging port be called in Haroldo speak? Electron hole? Spark hole? 'Lectric hole?   :)
