Title: Free tpms (w/dead batteries) replacement even w/expired 3 yr warranty
Post by: punkynlew1 on April 12, 2012, 03:12:49 PM
Good news for many older C14 owners. Searched online and found a Kawi document saying the tpms batteries "are rated for 5 years." I just called and varified this with a Kawi customer service rep and he said, "Take your '08 C14 to a dealer and if he says no (one had already said no), tell him to call us and we'll straighten him out." So, if you need tires, it's a good time to get free installation on those too, since they must be removed in order to install new tpms'.

Kawi document: K-TECH NEWS, vol. 20, issue 2 2007, pg. 12, para. 2.
Google "K-TECH NEWS, vol. 20, issue 2 2007" and it will be the top of the page link to a PDF Adobe document.  For those computer challenged an easy link is attached.  Lew

I posted that last year, when I had my first one replaced the dealer told me the battery in the unit had a 5 year warranty on them.

Dealer had better not give me any crap, cause I am gonna shove that 5 year warranty in their face! >:(

Now, now, Mr. Poke.  Don't get yer knickers in a twist before you take it in...  Save it for the actual confrontation.

The Kawi tech letter or the 5 year thingy?  The 5 year battery statement is in the owner's manual.  Ok, I take back the owner's manual statement.  Can't find it, but I've read it somewhere as well.  In search mode...

Ok, found it in the Kwak 2008 design factoid....which is also linked to in our C14 General Facts thread in the C14 Wiki area.  http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=93.0 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=93.0)

HEHEHEH
I found this quite humerous in that "factiod" sheet from the "design team"....
Q: Are the front and rear brakes linked?
A: No. For sport touring bikes, brakes that
can be used independently front and rear on
winding roads are part of the fun. Our view
is current Linked Brake Systems tend to
remove this fun factor – the underlying
principle of the C14.

I guess they decided the 2010 owners needed LESS FUN FACTOR

 :rotflmao:

I also don't think the O/P's tech paper holds any credence if handed to a dealerships tech people, that are'nt willing to comply, But I do suggest being adament about them replacing the TPS parts, right up till the last minute....(I say this tongue in cheek, because I know mine needs to be replaced this year...... :stirpot:    )

So not only are the newer bikes slower, they're less fun as well?    :stirpot:

This is my favorite part and why I bought the 2009 without ABS.

Yep, they kinda backpedaled on that, didn't they?  In Kawasaki's defense, however, note they said "current Linked Brake Systems tend to remove this fun factor".  They designed a different system with weak linking that is also adjustable.  The gen-2 brakes are still mostly what you apply;  if you activate the front brakes, you get mostly front; back, you get mostly back.  And there are two modes so you can link weakly or a little stronger.  They didn't go for what was more typical at the time they wrote that, which were HEAVILY linked brakes and with zero adjustment.

Same here (2008 w/ ABS).  Nothing I have read about the C14's linked brakes would invalidate the above statement.

I agree. I had linked brakes on a Goldwing and I didn't mind too much but would have preferred them to not be linked. The front end was more relaxed on a Wing. In slow parking lot maneuvers at full lock I always found the rear brake more useful since the front brake was more likely to upset the bike. For full on sport riding I want to control the brakes myself--for the fun factor as well as the proper control factor.

Stopped in the dealer today, stupid things acted up all the way there and I even showed them pictures. They said that Kawasaki is a pain in the ass to deal with, and they need me to leave the bike with them next week. I said that I will not be leaving my bike there for more than a week, so I am contemplating removing them all together or trying to replace the batteries. Are there replacement valve stems that I can purchase to replace these units with?

A week!?   :o

When mine were acting up I simply told my dealer's tech and he said that he'd order the sensors. When they came in I waited for my bike while he did the replacement. Actually, I didn't wait at the dealership, I test rode a '12 C14 while the work was being done.    8)

My tech said that Kawasaki was fine to deal with on these.

I actually mentioned to them that some dealers will order the sensors no questions asked, they obviously are not one of those dealers. ::)  Leave the bike with them, they see the problem, they call Kawasaki, Kawasaki may or may not approve of claim, sensors may or may not get replaced, if approved the sensors will be ordered, wait on sensors, keep bike there or ride it home, go back for replacement if I ride it home. Now do you see the pain in the ass........I am pulling them out, and I really don't trust them with removing installing my tires/wheels anyways. I remove and install my wheels, that way I know it has been done right.

Seems to me Pokey you are letting the dealer win. They see changing the TPS as an inconvenience. So in turn they decided to keep your bike for a week to make it an inconvenience for you. I would go back and ask why they need the bike for a week when they can order and call you when the sensors are in. If I still got jerked around, and because it’s not a safety issue, I would follow up with a call to Kawasaki customer service and complain there.  The reason I say this is because knowing when I do something out of the ordinary (TPS battery change) I have to make allowance for some guy named Murphy and his law.

@Pokey,
my experience is the same as Conrad's with this issue. The guarantee of this bike in Germany is 4 years, and mine will be over in October this year, so last week I told my dealer and they ordered the parts, together with the gear sensor. No fuss.
Is trying another dealer an option for you? I wouldn't like to give my business to such @sses.

I also took pictures of my message showing the low battery warning.  The dealer asked me to e-mail him the pictures.  He ordered the parts and fixed it with no hassles.

Talked to the dealer I bought the bike from, and the local dealer I am dealing with........BOTH will not order the sensors without keeping the bike first, so they can all kiss my ass. I like the TPMS system so I may try replacing the batteries myself, otherwise regular valve stems are going in.
