Title: Howdy Y'all
Post by: 1 wheel peel on December 10, 2012, 05:44:24 PM
Greetings from East Texas!  New to the Big K family, always owned Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda.  Traded my FJR plus cash for this `09.  It was bought new from the dealer in June 2011 by a 62 y/o who did not get to enjoy it much.  I got it last Wed and have only managed about a hundred miles so far.

Been lurking about for a couple of months gathering info here and on other Kawi forums.  Saved my "official newbi post" till I picked one up.  I've gained a lot of info here, hope to be able to add some back in the future.

My wife and sons all ride as well so that makes for some good family time.

On a short outing last Sunday.

Don't listen to ZG... the stock muffler is just fine.  And don't start painting the bike black, either!

Welcome!!  Don't let your riding partners test out your Connie.  1 - you might not get it back, or 2 - you'll be looking at getting 2 more Connie's

Keeping the stock muffler is like 'Taking One For The Team'.  :stirpot:

Thanks for the kind words folks, and you to Gumby...... that's not a team I want to be a member of !!! :o

I was actually able to pick up an `06 ZX14 header that was pulled at 500 miles the same day I picked up the bike.  So I'm workin on it guys. ;D  I have enough in my garage that are loud this one will remain quiet at least for now.  I also picked up a pretty rough pair of stock ZX cans for free (I know heavy , cats and restricted, thats ok, that's what I want) that will alow me to get things fitted.  I'm in the market for some undented/unscratched ones.

Also if anyone knows of a thread that is still functional regarding the installation of the stock ZX cans please post a link.  Some say the left mid pipe must be bent to use the center stand, some say it dosn't.  I have read a lot of opinions about what it takes but have yet to find a thread on the stockers being installed, seems like they were all lost at the other site or have been erased.  Lots of info on after market slipons.

Welcome!

The pad on the center stand doesn't clear the left side mid pipe, so you need to make changes for things to fit.  You can just extend the arm of the center stand around the pipe (what I did), remove the center stand (I would not), or buy a custom (like Muzzy's) modified center stand.

There's also no left side muffler mount location, so that requires a fix.  Many go with the Muzzy's left bracket, so it looks (mostly) factory.   I didn't...

And as for the pic Gumby posted, there just isn't enough alcohol to even consider joining that team.   :yikes:

Those things I am aware of, but does the mid pipe require any modification?  Sorry if this sounds stupid but I have not started on mine yet and I have not been able to find any pictures depicting that area.

I found the donut gasket where the mid connected to the header was thick enough to allow for slight manipulation of the midpipe to allow clearance around the hardparts. As C1x did, I modded the center stand to fit. The side stand contacted the mid slightly so I spotted a weld bead on the pad where the stand makes contact in the folded position. Went with Muzzy left side bracket.

Welcome, friend! If you have any questions regarding protection for your purty new bike (from any manufacturer, really. I'm rather versed on the subject.), don't hesitate to ask!

Really? Your avatar and signature suggest otherwise. ;)   J/K Ryan, glad to see you are looking out for the new comers.  :)

There are many of us here that would highly recommend the Canyon Cages and side bag protection from MCEnterprises.

Hahahaha Oh Gumby! I do work for MCE but that doesn't mean I can't have an objective view on protective equipment, regardless of manufacturer! Although, I may be a taaad biased.   :D

........If you have any questions ....
Great, Thanks!  As a matter of fact I do have a question. :)  Part #1400-410 is shown for the 2010-up only.  Is that style of bar available for the 08-09's?  I'm not a big fan of the #1400-100 I'm sure they would do a great job in the event of a tip over but I just can't see them without thinking of Ronald McDonalds shoes. :-\  I know, I know I have a strange way of thinking. :-[

We do indeed! The part number is #1400-400. It's a similar design although it does look different than the #1400-410 because the bike itself is slightly different. The Canyon Cage for the 2008-2009 Connie is actually slightly cheaper at $275 than the #410's are at $300 as well. Anyhow, here are some photos:

You got rid of the cleanest Blue Pretty FJRs I've ever seen! Does this mean we are doing a CCS install this summer?

This is how you welcome people around here? Sheesh!

Man, that bike is clean and just broke in.  Mine has 187 miles on it and I need to finish breakin so I can rip it.  I have been bad and it has seen 6k and I can tell it was just starting to get fun.

Most any of the FM rd's around Edom or Further south around New York had good surfaces last time I was up that way.  The guy that was over TxDot in Anderson County retired He always did a pretty good job on keeping or FM rds in good shape.  I was out the other afternoon and found a spot patched with lose asphalt, not like they paved it and had not sweped off the lose but like old crumbled up recycled stuff. :o  It might not be looking to good in our back road future round here. >:(
