Funny how the same thing gets such different responses: I have a new wood stove and cannot wait for a real 'test drive'. Going to be below freezing here all week with a dip to -3F on Thursday.... yippie!

It's zero right now with a light wind.

Down to 10 below tonight.

Tomorrow's 'high' temp is minus 5

Tomorrow night's low, 17 below, wind chill temps of ~35 below.    :o

Nice and toasty in the house though since I have the wood stove cranked with a flue temp of ~1,600f (measured right after the catalyst).

My poor Dachshund has a very hard time when it get's really cold. Her feet get so cold that she limps and can hardly walk. I have to go out with her and help her back in the house. I've been using this stuff on her feet.

It really makes a difference. It keeps her feet drier so that the snow doesn't stick and then melt on her warm feet. The only problem is that it tastes good (to her apparently) and she tries to lick it off.

Sounds like what happens to me when it gets cold.  I'll have to tell my wife about that cream so that she can do my feet.

Someone has to ask....Apply it or lick it off? (as if we can't speculate)

I won't know how well it tastes until I try it.  However, as Conrad already has the cream, he should be able to do a taste taste for me.  I'll be eagerly waiting on the results.

Our Beagle also has foot problems in the cold. We've tried a couple of booties types, thick and thin. Thick are warmer but bother her walking, thin keep her dry and happy. They're like little balloons.

And it's officially too cold in Ottawa to work on the bike in the unheated garage.

Heat wave today, we hit 10 ..single digits rest of the week...
Without a job, I've had to cut and haul all the firewood this year, in wheelbarrow loads, 150 yards uphill from the back property, luckily I had a big tree fall there, and have been using it sparingly. Can't afford to buy wood this year... dammit.
Getting old sucks.

Bosco gives the cream two paws up! I'll take her word for it since I ain't gonna taste it. It does smell good though, kinda minty.

-18F (again) forecast for tonight and a high of -4 tomorrow. Winter Windchill Warning (-45F) until Thursday.
Our Dachshund loves it outside in the snow until it goes below about 30F. Then in just a few minutes a back foot comes up off the snow and she will just lock up and stand there and wait for you to come pick her up or else I think she would stand there and freeze solid. Seems a common traight of the breed. Everyone I know of that has/had the Dachshunds says theirs did the same thing in the cold.
I will have to try that cream stuff. But the last thing she needs is more to lick or eat. This cold weather and extended couch time is packing on the weight.

For your Doxie or for you?    ;)

One of our three small dogs has fur so thick, and so much of it, that she even has fur on the bottoms of her feet. She has no issues with the cold, no matter how cold it is. She wants to play outside with the other two dogs in the subzero temps and they want NONE of that nonsense.

Sadly it seems to be all inclusive with the packing on of weight. Mia, the Doxie, myself and the wife have all been stricken by calorie consumption and failure to burn it.

-14F this morning. I have the day off. Went outside to plug in the TDI that wasn't destroyed  and has been sitting outside lately in the cold. I bought a "temporary" daily driver to replace the wrecked one. A Jetta Wagon with a 1.8T engine. Figured with gas prices so much lower than diesel and winter season it would be ok, but really miss having to fuel up only once every two weeks instead of every four days or so.
Going to take a road trip about noon. Found a 2004 Jetta on CL that is a candidate for the gas to TDI swap project I want to attempt this spring/summer. $1000 and I can drive it home even though there is no 1st gear in it, according to the seller. Might be just shift linkage cable issue. Doesn't matter really. Yank the gasser engine out and stuff the TDI under the hood instead. That's the easy part, the wiring harnesses and ECU and immobilizer/cluster swaps and programming might well drive me to further insanity.
Two C10s, five Jettas, and a shed full of snowmobiles and it's too cold and no snow to use or work on any of them. Got to go further north or way further south for a while, at least.

I guess we are peaking (or is that bottoming out?) with the cold front moving through tomorrow; it is supposed to be 3 or 4 below zero F, which is pretty cold for this area.

It was 16F this morning and the center of the house (not where the stove is located) was 72F, with the new wood stove chugging along nicely. Will have to stock it late tonight and open the draft a touch in preparation for tomorrow morning....

Yes, it is... interestingly I'm awaiting the heatwave, when we get 20+ f
After my new years eve drunken attempt to fixing my slammed flue damper, which resulted in blistering second degree burns on my arm where my welding gloves ended, I painfully admit you need to experience cold, to really apreciate anything above COLD.
Hey, I wouldn't trade this for Virginia weather again, knowing that could result in a clustrfark, but man, at least we have turns in the roads up here, hehehhehheh

Ride safe you bastiches... its 5* here right now, and dropping.
Having spent a month in a white canvas tent, in Alberta wilderness, watching leaves turn to gold then fall, and waking up sleeping on the ground, at -15*, I can say its all what ya make of it.

I grew up in a little town outside of Pittsburgh, Pa and later had the "opportunity"  to spend some time on Galcana Glacier in Alaska. 30 years ago I moved to the Sonoran desert and I've never looked back. There aren't many days here that are much over 110 so it's quite comfortable most of the time. Even the rides to Vegas or LA when it's above 110 are preferable to a ride across town at 50 degrees.

22 in Austin this morning. Balmy compared to what we had in CO last week but feels so cold here I actually drove the cage to work this morning. Probably a good thing since they are predicting freezing rain starting tonight and if it came in early while I was still at work it could strand me if I was on the connie.

I turn off the local weather idiots because they are idiots. When was the last time, if ever, a child suffered or was killed by wind chill temps solely from walking to or from school? Think we would have heard about it? And what do all the kids do when school is closed due to wind chill temps? They spend the day outside sledding, skiing and having a blast. Well, I guess I can understand why they close schools when I look at the idiots they have for parents who wear tennis shoes and light coats with no hats or gloves on below zero days.

Last night, I made the mistake of eating the last 4 chocolate covered raspberries that Momma was hoarding, she went ballistic on me... soooo, seeing as I had already had a glass of Bourbon, I donned my cold weather gear, and walked down the road to the Convenient Food Mart, to get her some chocolate... because I'm such a nice guy..(lie, I just got tired of the screaming..)
It's about 1/4 mile, I do it all the time, but it was single digits... and blowing gusts 20+ mph.
While I was checking out, a kid comes bopping in there, sneakers, no socks, basketball shorts, and a tank top..his car was out front running, of course... I looked at him and thought to myself just what would he do if he slid off into a ditch out here, and had to walk for help. The girl at the counter knew exactly what was going thru my mind while I stood there shaking my head and putting on my gloves.. I was really tempted to shut his car off, lock the doors, and toss his keys into the snowdrift..

Some lessons learn easy.
Some lessons learn hard.
And some lessons are never learned.

We are guilty of it here, going out not really dressed for the weather, because it does not usually get bitterly cold here and there are no large, open areas away from some kind of decent environment inside. I did know a guy who worked in northern Alaska for several years and it really does take a different method to live in those harsh environments. I can run out to my garage in the middle of winter in shirtsleeves because it is never cold enough to debilitate. When it is -20, -30F or colder, a person just cannot go outside unprepared because even a simple slip and fall could result in.... well, death. I remember that gentleman telling me that in AK, in the winter, a person simply cannot go outside with any exposed skin, not even to a different building nearby, because skin freezes so fast.

We had a lady drive into a bank today, literally, drove it into the side wall of the bank. I was outside for about 1/2 hour, my forehead and cheeks were numb and I was getting a headache from the wind. I go into the bank, she's wearing tennis shoes, light coat, no hat, no gloves. I watch the people driving up to go into the bank all dressed the same. I'm cold, and I got all my gear on. She was ok, I asked her where she was going and why she was dressed the way she was, she just shrugged, as if saying, "who would have thought I'd drive into the bank today"? I wasn't going to ask her what if it was after hours and she was going through the ATM and this happened? No cell phone. I get back to the firehouse, look up the temp, 3 below zero current temp. What are you going to do? You can't fix stupid.

Back in the days when I had to work for a living, I did it at a university and I was there for 30 years. One would think that college 'kids' would know how to dress themselves no? No, they don't, not all of them anyways. When momma isn't around to tell them what to wear they have no idea. I don't know how many times I stood in the halls watching the idiots walking into class in light jackets, no gloves, no hats, and no brains, while it was below zero outside. The absolute worse was seeing some moron wearing shorts in that weather. I can say that, for the most part, women are smarter than men in this regard. In all those years I only witnessed a handful of women stupid enough to wear shorts in those conditions.

On the other hand, I sure do miss seeing those young women in the warm weather. That's the ONLY thing that I miss about working there...    :P

The problem is not being smart enough to wear appropriate clothing for the weather. The problem is that for a teenager, getting laid is a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 and the next highest priority is maybe a 2. Therefor it is infinitely more important to look cool then the be dressed for weather. The ones that never get over this as they age grow up to ride Harley's.

Maybe Deziner was smart enough to wear appropriate clothing for the conditions when he was a teen?

And now he has a Concours, so that truly makes him a pretty smart guy.

I carry Sorrel snowmobile boots, insulated coveralls and a parka in the back seat of my commute car(s) all winter. And some tools. You just never know, and, yes, I've had to use them a couple of times. Once due to my own mechanical/fuel issue and other times to assist others. Even a relatively simple tire change situation turns into a dangerous condition when its sub-zero and windy.
Try to be prepared for the unexpected. There are lots of places up here where you could be on your own for too long not to be.

Nice. What tank bag is that?

Kawasaki tank bag.  Custom fit to the Versys tank.  It is expanded in the photo.  The only downside is that it does not come with a rain cover so everything inside is in waterproof bags.  Of course, ALL of my luggage is in waterproof bags.  Learned to do that when travelling with soft luggage and it helps keep things organized.

They make the tank bag for several models including the Concours.

78* and lovin' it in Napa Valley and Sonoma mountains yesterday. Doing some Sierra Nevada sweepers today. I feel blessed to ride in Ca. with this weather. I have also found that the best braking technique for fast sweepers is having ABS (non-linked 2009) and using the rear brake only (trail braking) leading into curves. It works great with tighter twisties also, just more pedal effort is needed along with a little front brakes.

The technique is called "trail braking" using the rear brake, not to be confused with braking on dirt trails..

14" of snow fell overnight here and we have a winter storm warning till 2 this afternoon. At 2 the winter storm warning is being replaced by a blizzard warning with 45mph winds predicted.  :o

Yeah baby!    :)

Finally some snow to get the snowmobiles out to play in!

Still nothing for snow up here in the "Great not so White North" this year.
But, if its any consolation, it was -14F this AM.
Snowmobiles still have yet to leave the yard.

Bring them snow machines down here to the North coast of Ohio....
Snow finally stopped around 5am, total is near 18" in this last storm... it hit hard, now the arctic blaster is hitting tonight, wayyyyy below zero temps...

Man, I did the snowblower thing 4 times yesterday before halftime on the game, and still gotta do it again today... I'm whooped.

We had a total of around 24" of snow here. So much snow that I got my snowmobile stuck twice in snow drifts! I made the mistake of slowing down, not good. It's no fun digging your sled out when you're bundled up for the cold.

The storm that we just had here on Saturday night into Sunday turned out to dump the 4th highest amount of snow on the area since they started keeping track of such things, since the mid 1800's.

We are getting far more than usual on the east coast too although nothing like where you are of course.

This last storm probably dropped another 8 inches on us but it went on a long time and kinda' stopped in the middle: I got the snowblower out a bit too soon and had to hit part of the driveway again. No sidewalks open around here and no garbage pick up either.

Heard a cat yowling two nights ago and went outside to have a look. He was standing in the path I cut to the street and did not seem happy to see me or the outside lights..... so he went to jump west and thought better of it as there was 2' of snow there. Then he looked east and had the same problem. Finally, he ran towards me until he hit the driveway and ran off; I really do not know why he did not go toward the street but it was funny to watch his indecision while he contemplated the whole thing.

Oh yeah, he was wasting his time 'cause there are no cats here and I really do not know why he was looking for a 'date' in my yard.  ::) ???

Nah, it was a big ole' buck of a cat. And he was doing the 'buck yowl', the one where he is asking if there are any little doe cats around that would like to come out and play. What is interesting about this is that I do not have any cats so I wonder how he got my address. My son and his wife were here in the fall with their two female cats but it has been a bunch of months now and those cats were never outside. Unless they left some kind of secret message on the outside of a house like hobos sometimes do? You know, something like "For a good time, call XXX-XXXX' or similar?

Well, I personally am enjoying this winter even though it is both colder than normal and quite a bit more snowfall than normal. Hey, I gots me a brand new woodstove and an almost new snowblower (with tracks!), what's not to like? Temp. going to -7F tonight and I am fixing to pack as much oak into that bad boy as I can (meaning the snowblower of course). It is 75F in the hallway right now and will probably be down to 70 or 71F by tomorrow morning.

And remember, as far as snowfall is concerned, it is supposed to be 12" to a foot. Well, I guess everything is 12" to a foot, right?

SO we finally hit the record Low temp in Cleveland history, for February, here in Cleveland, middle of the night...
-17*

(I think we saw -26* AND AROUND THAT, frequently in January 1976, iirc)

it hit -39* in Rome Ohio, about 25 miles from my house, my house was -20* when I looked early this a.m.
Hambden about 10 miles from me hit -30*...
WOW.

I did the snowblower thing last night around 10 pm, and as there was not much snow to remove, did it in record time, about 15 minutes... but it was -13* at the time, and I almost got frostbite on my hands with my warmest gloves...

simply brutal...

Are these temps with wind chill, or without? I didn't think it got that cold over there under the lakes.

I'm in Atlantic Canada, but it doesn't get terribly cold where I live...thanks to the ocean (and the Gulf Stream I guess). It very rarely gets colder than 5-10*F here. With wind chill, maybe -10*F to -13*F. So, February nights and mornings are often between 5-10*F, with daytime temps between 10-25*F.

The trade-off however is the rain that comes with the snow...and it's no fun. A usual "snow storm" here will start out in the 5-10*F range, and 6-12" of light fluffy snow will fall....then it will warm up in the afternoon and pour rain for a couple hours, and then all of that will flash freeze again by late afternoon or early evening...LOL. It will make your car look like an ice cube in the driveway, and it will make you go insane trying to scrape it off...LOL.

Some of the coldest temps I've seen were in MN while on work trips a few years back. It was also my first experience in driving full size pick-up trucks on lakes in the winter...lol. It doesn't get cold enough to do that in eastern Canada.
I arrived in Mankato in the winter and it was -40*F/C...whatever...it was frickin' cold. The gal at the front desk at the plant asked me if I brought the cold with me from Canada...lol.

Well, yeah. But I've been driving the 1.8T Jetta gasser wagon I bought after the '03 Jetta TDI was destroyed. Sort of nice because it warms up so much faster, which is all relative with the gas tank emptying twice as fast. I've been able to squeeze 30+ mpg out of it all winter, so with the current price spread it's close to a wash. The everyday driver cars get to park in the garage. It's not heated, but it's insulated and doesn't get horrible cold in there.
The older TDI hasn't been used for a few months and is being neglected parked outside at least til it warms up a bunch. If I plugged in the FrostHeater for a couple hours it would fire right up. I do miss the smell of diesel in the morning, though.

It was -17F air temp. Thursday night officially at Cleveland Hopkins airport which is about 10 miles SW of the city of Cleveland but the officially recognized temp for the city of Cleveland. That makes it the coldest temp in Cleveland in the month of February since records have been kept, outlying areas, where residual heat from the concrete of the city keeps the temps warmer, were much colder, about 80 miles east of Cleveland in Rome Ohio, an unofficial temp of -39 air temp was recorded. That was the coldest night since 1994 when the official lowest temp ever recorded in Cleveland was -20F. Not a big deal for folks farther north, but average temps for this time of the year here is the upper 30'sF.

Yeah, it gets brutally cold in the center / north of the US, starting in the east under the Lakes, and moving all the way through Idaho. Minnesnota and Wisconsin are famous for not only their brutally cold winters but their hot summers- some of the widest temperature swings in the US.

I am on the northeast US but just below the snowbelt and this year, just below the surprise belt, which is mostly in Massachusetts. Dem dare guize is gettin' pummeled! We have had unusually cold and high snowfall too but not the same as MA regarding snowfall. It was an honest -12.2F here (actual, not w/ windchill) this am, which is very cold for this area. It is up in the 20's F now, and later we have some snow coming to take out minds off the cold though.

And, all of the Great Lakes currently have more ice on them than ever in recorded history. A freighter got stuck in 10 foot thick ice on Lake Erie and the U.S. Coast Guard could NOT get to them, they had to retreat and ask for help from the Canadians who will try again in the next few days. True, the ship the U.S. was using is smaller than the Canadian one that will be used but, I have never ever remembered a ship getting stuck in the ice on Lake Erie and the Coast Guard being unable to free it.

My father-in-law used to tell me that at one time it was so cold in VA (early 1900s to 1940's) that you could drive vehicles across the Roanoke river from VA into NC.  I think what we're seeing, and has been predicted as part of 'global warming' is that the weather is becoming more severe in nature...hotter summers, colder winters, and storms more severe...except for hurricanes which seems that they aren't as numerous here lately.  It doesn't take much of a change in the tilt of the Earth to cause climates to change either.

You can stick your heads in the sand about climate change but the oceans are rising and the poles (not talking about Poland) are melting.  Something is going on and it's either a natural series of events or man made assisted.  Doesn't really make any difference as nothing we do can stop it.  It's our kids and theirs that will have to worry about it in the future.

The climate has been changing since God was a sparkle in his Mama's eye. To think that humans can change the global climate with anything short of global thermonuclear war is the height of arrogance.
Title: Re: brrrrrrrr

Perhaps but I think you greatly underestimate just how successful we (humans) have been at altering the natural order of things on this planet. It is almost beyond all imagination the sheer amount of fossil fuel we are, and have, digging up and burning. This would never have been part of this planet's normal course.

That said, certainly climate change is and has been going on forever without any human intervention. And just as certainly, it would still be happening had humans not gotten so good (or is that so bad?) at reaching out and changing things to better suit us. I do not believe anyone can truly separate what is human caused and what would have happened had we not intervened.

But there is more than sufficient evidence that we are in fact driving the temperature of the planet up. Whether that is a bad thing, and how bad, remains to be seen.

Unfortunately the whole issue has turned into a political stance, which is really too bad because it is a social and scientific issue, not political. And our social systems of dealing with social issues by using politics is really working quite poorly in this situation (it often does but this issue is being dealt with particularly badly IMO).

I am sure there will be positive facets to the coming changes though- the new beaches in Arizona will be prettier and cleaner than the ones in California IMO. :-)

Yes, we've had a couple ships and ferries stuck in the ice out here lately as well. All of this record ice, frigid cold temps, and relentless snowstorms are part of global warming I am repeatedly told...lol. Whether any of it is true or not is not my point. My point is how funny it sounds to my ears..."The record ice thickness, and frigid winters are due to global warming". I personally have a hard time reconciling the two..."record ice" and "warming".

The climate has been changing since God was a sparkle in his Mama's eye. To think that humans can change the global climate with anything short of global thermonuclear war is the height of arrogance.

Ya know, that's a good point. Icebergs have been braking off up north and floating down south here and melting for a long long time...since before we had dirty smokestacks even. The difference now is, with all our modern technology (media), people are now aware of it.
But don't worry Mr. Pink, we're all on the way to being saved by fields of windmills...haven't you been watching the news??...LOL.

There have been vast amounts of climate swings in the past affecting life on earth. Consider that less than 1% of life forms are still aound since the first life form began- the rest of all species have become extinct. We should be glad that we live in a relatively benign climate era that greatly supports homo sapiens.. witnessed by the explosive growth to over 6 billion in the last couple of hundred years.

Olds, it was being followed 3 miles back by the US Republic Steel, and when the Olds wedged, the Republic could not slow down to a stop before slamming into the stern of the Olds.... a pal was onboard the Olds for the last winter run, iirc it was in January, he ship to shore called me to come pick him up in Lorain after the cut the 2 boats apart, it took 2 Canadian cutters and the Neah Bay to cut thru to get them into port that time. Don't recall any stuck ore boats since that year...

Oh, and those temps as you say, were actual air temps, thank god there was no wind......
Heatwave right now its 23* and snowing again...... back out to the snowblower I go..... this is getting to suck badly, below zero temps forcast for tomorrow again.

Great news! It is snowing here.... again. But only 3" to 5" and then it will turn to rain which will either 1) crush some more roofs or 2) make an excellent protective layer for the snow when it drops to -6F on Monday.

Went looking for a roof rake today and THAT was met with some serious guffaws: no one has seen one of those in a month. Too bad as my barn roof is a tad.... weak. I am going to re-roof the building in the spring but I was not planning on shoveling the snow out of it first... :-(

Still, got plenty of fuel for the snowblower and that thing is a snow destroying weapon. Then again, it is kind of a forearm destroying weapon too- I can still feel the last snowstorm in my forearms while typing this.

No matter- got plenty of wood (Boys!), ale, wine, scotch and a big glass with a stirrer. All of which make the snowblowing more fun although it seems to make the pets in the neighborhood a tad nervous....

Local Cleveland weather man just said we had 1-1/2" of snow today.... what a maroon.... I just finished with my snow muncher machine, and never once did it not have 10" on either side of the clearcuts I was making...  that's the difference 25 miles can make, some folks in Cleveburgh don't have a clue... that's why they call where I live "the snow belt" perfect geographic change in elevation, coupled with the lake shore, and we have a snow machine that reallllly produces well.... might get outta the house and go to the local slopes tomorry, and try to break some tibia.... sounds like fun....

Oh, snow rakes? Bwaaaahaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaa.....
Man, hit Lowes and get some 2 x 2's and a piece of osb, and make one... then this spring, you can burn it in effigy....
I always made my own, and its getting close to make one this year, we have had as much as 18" on the house at times this year, currently have about a foot, but I'll make one if needed....  back in 1994 iirc, we got an early mega storm beginning of november, trees still had leaves on them, and we got dumped on with a 30"+ overnight storm, heavy wet snow... actually had to shovel off my girlfrends dads house roof... by hand... what a trip shoveling thigh deep snow off a roof... and when finished, simply did backflips off the eave into the 8foot high piles..... mm mm fun.
Some big warehouses actually had crews on the roof with snowblowers, a lot of steel building collapsed....

My original plan was that they could ride up on top of the snow cutter. The other ideas of tossing them up there really are the better ideas- and the kids would love that too, well most of them. But of course they would be tossed up BEFORE removing the snow so they would have a soft landing..... we do not want to be cruel after all. Then comes the bump from the snow cutter and the ride down the roof into the pile of snow on the ground. Good times.

Yesterday, it went into the low 40's F, and a lot of the snow started to melt. My whole driveway was a field of slush 2" or more deep. Today it is dropping through the 20's F and into the teens, and tonight it is forecast to go to -7 F. The good news is that the slush has firmed up (Easy Boys!), the bad news is that it has firmed up into ice. Walking around out there you have to keep your arms out and sort of fall from foot to foot, not unlike a drunk penguin with its wings spread. The body shops are going to be doing a box office business based on the formula Dollars = force X mass.  I would say it was a mess out there but it is not nearly nice enough to be a mere mess....

man, this is getting pretty much painful here in the snowbelt of Ohio... weather chanels say we were to have "about 4" of snow"..
just got done blowing off another 8-10 from the drive... we now have snow over 30" deep in the yard, after it's been settling for the last 2 weeks....this in reality, if measured after every event, would add up to almost 6 feet total accumulation... virtually impossible to walk thru around my 3 acres perimeter... :rotflmao: why the hell didn't I buy a snowmobile this last falll? !!! may have to buy one this spring when I get back to work, like buying a snowblower, or washing the car, it will surely make the weather change to be the opposite you want for the reasoning...
now we have a forecast (currently we are in a heatwave @ 25*) of RAIN come Tuesday... OMG... this is gonna be fun, seeing as the rivers and lake are completely frozen, and all new water drainage will flow on top of the already frozen mess.... ain't seen anything like this in almost 40 years... gonna be interesting. :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :stirpot: :banghead: :banghead:

How does the ocean level only rise in the northeast? That's a good question, and I'm going to run some tests at home tonight and see if I can fill one end of the bath tub to a higher level than the other. I'll let you know how it goes...LOL.
Don't worry though, I'm not a complete lunatic...I know the study suggests the rise in level is due to currents, and not an actual increase in the amount of water. I think.

It is snowing here.... again. Because that is what it does lately. It snows.

That's OK, I tweaked the skids and the belts on the snow blower tonight and took a test- blow (Easy Boys!) in some hard packed snow that was over the top of the blower housing at 21". All is well and it is a snow throwing weapon so I dare you..... I double- dare you snow, do your worst!  Big Red awaits..... :-)

Winter came early and has not left yet. Still, I am a Yankee, born and bred, and I like the winter season. This one is a bit more stringent than most but that is just an enjoyable change of pace.

My wife could not get up the driveway tonight due to the 1" of fresh snow over the ice packed on the driveway. No matter, I got her car in the garage and am ready to do battle with the ice cap with mid- 40F temps tomorrow and a good coating of wood ash on the snow. Take that mother nature....

Yeah, that's what it does here too...lol.
The general population is outraged, and they're threatening to march on City Hall if they don't somehow make the snow stop...
Somehow...LOL.

In defence of the unwashed masses...there have been some pretty steep cut-backs in snow removal budgets in recent years. After all, it was only a couple years ago we thought winter had become just a minor inconvenience for a few weeks in February...the kind of snow you could simply sweep off your step, ya know?...lol. But this year...it's been snowing for a month straight...and it's making people go crazy...LOL.

Here's a pic below of the road I live on a few hundred feet from my house (on the way to work this morning). Another 4" of snow last night and into this morning. And there's about 10" of ice on the road under all that snow.

So, about 15 degrees F last night and this morning, and then 40 degrees and rain this afternoon, then back down below freezing again after that. Is it any wonder people are gettin' weird in the head?...LOL. Motorcycle season sure looks like it's a long ways off.

Here in Seattle, it has been unusually warm and dry this winter. All of the local ski areas are closed, due to lack of snow. The last week it has been sunny and in the mid-50's. The Cherry trees are starting to blossom, and Daffodils are coming up.

Of course that means there will be a severe water shortage this summer, since our water comes from snowmelt. No snow, no water. The last time we had a winter like this, there was serious talk of water rationing.

I was just up in Alaska, and they are having the same kind of winter, warm (by Alaska standards), and no snow.

Sorry that so many of the rest of you are really getting clobbered this winter!

Gradual warm up here in Cleveburg, good, as rain will cause MAJOR flooding with a 2 foot snowpack. Is there really that much ice on the ground that when it melts, the oceans will rise? Because, I am of the opinion that any ice already in the water, ie: the north pole, and a lot of the south pole, when melted will act much like an ice cube in my gin and tonic, meaning, when the cube melts, the delicious liquid in my glass stays at the same height. ;D

It snowed again here and this time it was the wet, heavy snow of warmer temperatures (usually called 'heart attack' snow 'cause this is the stuff that..... well, you know). It stuck to everything and I have to say, this is the most beautiful snow of the season for me. There are a lot of 'canopied' roads around there, where the branches and twigs of the trees on both sides meet in the middle; when this kind of snow occurs, everything in all directions is pure white, including looking 'up'. Of course this is a motorcycle forum, and lots of people do not care for the winter season anyway, never mind the loss of riding time but I have to say, I would really miss this season if I did not have it at least every two or three years. Besides there being something fundamentally wrong with an air conditioner making the branches of a Christmas Tree move around  ::) , winter is actually enjoyable, at least for some of us. Besides all that, my snowblower is a Honda so it is not all that big a stretch from a Kawasaki anyway. :-)

It is going down to 3F tonight and 9F tomorrow night so this stuff is going to freeze into a big, white rock. Best shovel or blow it out of the way now folks 'cause in two days you might need a pickaxe to break it up beforehand.  :o

Add one more to the "In favor" column.  February produced a lot of snow here (New England).

I got a roof rake a few years back as I used to get really bad ice dams, its one of the best things I got in awhile for the house. It really works well, anybody that has this problem should look into getting one, they are not expensive to buy, and if you are handy around the house, you can make one yourself.

I'm in Nova Scotia...just across the water from New England, so we get the same weather.

I have a foot of snow on my roof, and in some places more than a foot, but no ice dams. I cleared the gutters this week, and everything seem to melt ok when warms. However, the manager in our office here says his roof is leaking.

It was 7*F last night, and only 20*F today, so nothing is melting at the moment...lol. Weekend is looking like 34 degrees on both days, so that'll start to soften things up a bit...lol.

There's a reason they do that.  No one around here can drive in the snow and the ones that know how shouldn't be on the road as the ones that don't know how to drive in it take them out.

This morning 95 south was closed for icing as a truck jack knifed and blocked every thing.

Reminds me of the time we got onto I44 (at Joplin headed north) despite it being closed due to some ice and/or snow...  We saw no signs or anything, I guess everyone down there just knows these things;  Here's a transcript of our interaction with the Trooper that pulled us over somewhere near Springfield, as I remember it :  (I was about 25 at the time - he looked younger...)

Trooper : What the h*ll are you doin out here...  The highways been closed since midnight...
Me : Sorry - there was no sign, I didn't realize...
Trooper : Didn't realize what?  The roads are undriveable.
Me : Really...  They don't seem all that bad...
Trooper : (with and incredulous look)  Not too bad?  Where the h*ll you from, son?  (amusing, as I think he was younger than me)
Me : Well, we're just heading home to Canada after a three week business trip...
Trooper : CANADA?  Well, I guess you boys are used to these kinda conditions...  See a lot of this, huh?  How much further you headed?
Me : Springfield Airport - two exits, I think...
Trooper : Yup. 2nd exit. Then turn (I forget which direction now...)
Me : Anywhere to get a coffee between here and the airport?
Trooper : There's a pretty good diner bout a half mile down that road.
Me : Thanks - I could use a decent coffee...
Trooper : I think I'll join you...

Despite his initial gruffness, he turned out to be a great guy - followed us in to the restaurant. Not sure if he just wanted us off the highway, or actually wanted to talk about Canada - he'd never been there...  He even paid for the coffee - wouldn't let us buy him one - said he wasn't allowed to...

My oldest son grew up here and learned how to drive in the winters of northern Illinois (he's naturally a great driver, being my son you know). He now lives in Tennessee and calls me with stories of the locals not knowing how to drive in the snow and the store shelves getting emptied when the forecast calls for 2 inches of snow. His boys have been off of school for two days now because of a couple of inches of snow and a bit of ice.   ;)

SHOES? You had it real easy with shoes! We had to sell the skin on the soles of our feet to a vendor who made faux leather jackets out of them!

Brian

ya know, as much as I biotch about it, I grew up here, and all said, Kinda love it all... I could never live in Florida or Kalifonica...

there is something to be said about the tenacity of us folks living here.... we got balls, shrunken, but we got balls. and sometimes the beauty outweighs the pain...

midnight time exposure shot from our first snow in November...looks pretty much the same now, but that picnic table is a white lump in the yard currently.... ::)

40's and 50's temps coming this week! No rain. I figure by May 1st the last of the snow, especially the mountains of it in the parking lots, should be about gone. Winter isn't over by a long shot, plus, they got to use up thousands of tons of salt, as if they don't, they won't get as much next season.

First ride yesterday!!   ;D

The picture was taken from inside the garage, you can see the channel I had to carve out of the ice the get the bike out.  Backed it slightly up hill out along side of the car.

Feet on the ice over the channel was not a fun couple of pushes going backwards, I'm going to make that channel wider for the next ride.

Here too. It is 51F today (so far) and everything outside is creaking, knocking, dripping and generally moving around. Everything is changing size as it moves away from the nominal 12F that it is used to being lately.

I think this has been the coldest overall winter I can remember, as well as one of the largest annual snowfalls for this area.

This is getting a bit old.
3/5/15 should be better than this.
-22F at home when I left for work. -27F there.

And five days later it is in the low 50's. Quite a sudden 70* and more temp change.
Have seen a few bikes out on the city streets today at work.
Gettin' the itch, but almost a foot of snow in my yard still and getting the C10 out would be an accident waiting to happen. I would end up with the thing on top of me, no doubt.

Everything is melting around here too, I can even see the grass in the yard! It's a mess though. I love/hate this time of year. I love that it's warming up and it's gonna be time to ride soon but I hate the soggy yard and the dogs tracking mud into the house. The streets are still white with salt and as soon as we get a lil rain to wash 'em off I'll be out riding!

65f predicted for Monday.  :)

This is the time of year, these next few weeks, where the idiots go onto the ice on the Great Lakes for ice fishing and either fall through at thin spots or get set adrift on floes that break away from the main ice, almost always along with their snowmobiles and equipment, sometimes cars. Its really dangerous now as its slushy and its melting unevenly and very hard to spot thin areas. The veterans have called it a season, the morons go until they fall through or are ordered off.

We were watching the Boston News the other night, an they were showing pictures of the kids playing around the chunks of ice on the beach in Cape Cod. Chunks of ice 6 feet thick sitting on the beach...kinda surreal looking for the area.

We've had the coldest February on record here across the water Brian...it only got above freezing 5 times in the whole month, and those 5 times were brief...lol.

Supposed to be another foot or so coming tonight. Ugh.

Wow, you are still getting more? I think we are over the snow hurdle- it is raining here right now. Snow showers predicted for tomorrow but even if it does snow, it won't be much and it will not last as a 45F or warmer day will melt it all.

Yep, the edge of MA did catch it pretty badly this year. And while all big cities are lousy regarding plowing large snowfalls (not enough room to put the stuff), Boston is especially bad with its far too narrow and twisty 'cow path' roads. Six feet plus of snow is just a horror show anywhere in that area.

28 March, 2015 and the forecast is calling for 1-3" of snow. This is the longest lasting, steadily coldest and highest snowfall winter I can remember, including 1978 when the blizzard dumped 54" on us and shut the state down for a week. Title: Re: brrrrrrrr

How was the fishing?

Fishing has been poor this year, as conditions have been very cold and windy with 180* direction shifts every other day on the weekends we have gone out. Enough excuses, but between that and equipment failures (previous two trips had resulted in towing a snowmobile ten miles out due to an engine meltdown and a chaincase issue) it was a tough season.
This was a bit better, but caught 6 lakers, about 15 walleyes, a few pesky northern pike and a couple random jumbo perch over the course of a day and a half. Almost all the walleyes were relatively decent sized males, the spawning females haven't felt enough warmer incoming river water to get into the mood yet.
We had a good fish fry, brought our meager trout and walleye limits home, so it was a good trip.
The only casualty was my Suburban almost derailed the trip before it got out of town. 20 miles from home with the tandem trailer with three snowmobiles and sleds in tow I was heading out to pick up the brother in law. Started hearing a vibration that quickly turns into a thumping noise. A couple stops for inspection of trailer, tires, driveshaft axles and u joints turn up nothing. Stick my head out the window to look/listen and see the driver side rear wheel wobbling. Three of the six wheel studs had broken off and the remaining three were very loose. Almost lost the wheel, obviously. Had to make some calls, abandon the Sub and do some trailer and vehicle swaps to make the trip, all at 4 AM.
Tightened up the remaining lug nuts and limped the Sub home very slowly on the return leg of the trip yesterday. Might get a chance to pull it apart this afternoon. It would have been a disaster if it had happened in the Canadian stretch of road.
Rain/snow at 35* this morning. More Brrrrr....

Haha...yes, that's my wife's Honda...and it's a pet peeve of hers too...lol.

I only cleared enough snow off so I could pull it out on the road. That way, I don't have to shovel the snow I clean off the car...lol. It becomes the snow plow's problem. Every little bit helps when the snow arrives in one foot increments...lol.

Our snow finally melted as MOB said, we even finally got a half in of rain to wash off the roads only to get a few flurries Friday and they salted the s**t out of the roads, they have to use up what they have or they can't order more next season, anyway, back to square one as I usually get the bike out late in March also.

Yeah, I <should> have knocked the snow off of my roofs but did not- and now that they have <not> caved in, it was the correct choice I guess. :-)

Your photos of the car remind me of a couple of things: 1) there is a new law in RI that drivers MUST clean a car of all snow before being driven and 2) I think I might be the cause of that.

I normally do not more / remove any more snow that I have to because by July it is all gone anyway and so moving it is a fool's errand IMO. One day I carved a little hole on my side of the windshield and only a token hole in the rear window (not enough to see through, just going through the motions really). My wife is sitting next to me carrying on about how bad and dangerous this is and how I should be ashamed, etc.. WHEN SUDDENLY, we came upon an accident and a LEO doing the paperwork: as I passed them (safely might I add!), he yelled at me to pull over; when I did, he went on a little tear about cleaning my windows off and that it was bad, dangerous, etc., etc. Now I did not mind that- I always do the right thing when forced to do so, but that really wound my wife up and intensified the previous comments with "See- I told you....". The moral of the story is that not properly clearing the snow from a vehicle can hurt your ears.  ;D

First of April and it is 38 and sunny here. The driveway and streets are finally clear and dry though, now to wait for a decent rain to wash most of the salt and at least some of the sand off the roads....  I have been doing all my motorcycle riding in my Envoy.  :(

Brian

Same thing here Brian...it just isn't stopping...lol. We got another 8-12 inches last night.

I normally have my bike out on the road in April, and sometimes in late March. Not this year apparently.

You could have pointed out to Officer Friendly that while your windows may have been covered with snow, YOU were not the one involved in an accident. Could the driver of the wrecked car say the same?

The wife and I are camping this Friday (yesterday) and weekend with a group up at a northern MN State Park. I rode the C10 to work Friday morning and the wife drove the Sub w/camper trailer up to the park where I met her after work. Nice ride, but windy and lots of remote country for potential deer sightings. Huddled around a group campfire last nite as the temps dropped and the weather service issued a frost warning. Woke up to a thermometer on the vehicle laying on about 32*, the smart phone shows 35* in the nearest community. I'm sure there would have been frost if not for the lake holding some temp. Only spotted one deer on the 48 miles into work. It has a winter coat and a bomber hat.
There WILL be hardwarmers on the Connie before Sept.
