Loose instrument cluster - '05 C10
« on: February 15, 2017, 03:13:40 PM »
Finally had it with the buzz coming from a loose instrument panel.  Is it necessary to remove the upper fairing to get to the instrument cluster?

Not on my 1987.   What is the best way to fix excess vibration, like replace the rubber grommets and are they avail, esp for an 87?   I thought about using some silicone, install the cluster but dont tighten the nuts until 24 hr later.?

The bolts that hold the cluster on, go thru rubber bushings with steel inserts.
The bolts tighten against the inserts and stop compressing the rubber.
Plus, The rubber shrinks with age.

I simply added small washers that fit over the inserts and compressed the rubber bushing more when the bolts are tightened.

EZ to do.

NOTE: Over tightening the bolts will not help..

Ride safe, Ted

For 1994 and newer, it's easier if the upper fairing is removed.

Remove side fairings.
Remove inner fairings (the pockets).
Remove the dash cowl, don't forget to unplug the clock).
Remove the mirrors (2 10mm *bolts* each side).
Remove the two upper fairing bolts near the valve cover.
Remove the two 10mm *nuts* each side that were hidden by the mirror, leave the clips in.
Disconnect the headlight plug.
Hold the fairing at the top front as you remove the two 'clips', slip the fairing forward and off.

To remove the cluster:
Disconnect the two harness plugs on the left side.
Disconnect the speedo drive.
Remove the two 10mm bolts at the lower outside corners of the cluster.

With the cluster on the bench, there are three(?) nuts that hold the cluster to the metal bracket. Remove them, and find a washer that will fit around the steel bushings (3/8" plain washer?) so when reassembled this washer will bear on the rubber, and not the bushing. Reassemble.

TY for the responses.  Will do the trick with the larger washer.  Thanks.

IIRC I think I just removed the windshield, the inner faring pockets and the shroud around the cluster and was able to then access the cluster for removal.

TY for all the suggestions - The extra washers did the trick.  The front fairing was not difficult at all to remove and also learned that the last time I replaced the headlight the bulb was not seated down all the way, and that two of the instrument cluster bulbs were burned out.  Re-seated the headlight bulb, and replaced all the illumation bulbs with new 194's and a 74 for the clock light, now the lighting is way better, too.  Thanks again.
