In case anyone was wondering, that 'thing' that plugs the end of the barrel of naval guns is called a 'tampion'.

In the early days of blacksmiths forging iron and steel, one of the products they made was nails. As you can imagine, making a handful of nails by hand, from iron ore, using an anvil, hammer and forge would make them tremendously expensive. Only the wealthy could afford nails for any use while common folks used made do with all- wood methods of construction such as post and beam with wooden pins, and mortise and tenon joins just as the Amish people do to this day.

What few nails were around were always re-used if at all possible, again due to their value. One of the more common uses for nails was in the construction of doors of larger houses; nails somewhat longer than the thickness of both pieces of wood to be joined were used and the protruding tip of the nail was hammered over on the inside of the door. This made a very strong and permanent construction method but also guaranteed that nails used in this way could never be used again. Perhaps part of this usage was so that the wealthy could flaunt their affluence amongst the common people. In any event, it did yield a great English expression which is commonly used to this very day: “Dead as a doornail” or “Deader than a doornail”, meaning something that is so completely used up or worn out that it cannot be used any further no matter how much effort is applied.

The roots of this expression are older than modern English; the expression was originally written in Middle English (11th to 15th century) and may possibly even pre- date that period.

So if you have ever been up in the middle of the night fixated over the question: 'How long does honey last?' never fear, I have an answer. Honey lasts forever, at least as far back as human history and the storage of honey is concerned.

Honey has been found as a food source buried with Pharaohs in ancient Egypt, going back more than 3,500 years and perhaps 4,500 years. Even though it was stored in what passed for an impermeable ceramic container of the period, all the water has escaped over the centuries and the honey is in a totally dry state. Not to worry though, add water and heat for a few minutes and 'poof', honey! No bacteria, no mold or any other signs of spoilage. There is a natural preservative in honey and it would seem that it really makes the grade.

Next time, the 'bee dance'.

Starting in the spring and happening at intervals through the active season, a handful of drone bees will leave the hive and move in straight lines away from the hive in search of pollen bearing plants. Each bee travels a few degrees away from the next bee so they cover the maximum area; sort of like the spokes of a wheel. When the find pollen, the return to the hive and while a large portion of the remaining drone bees watch, they do the 'bee dance'. This dance consists of turns to the left, turns to the right and the pauses between turns. Apparently length of the pauses indicate distance and the direction of the turns indicate which way to turn; the bee is literally giving directions to the other drones. At the end of the 'dance', the drones that were watching all fly off directly to the pollen the 'dancing' bee had found.

And we have trouble coordinating five motorcycles all in a group ride. Pathetic.  ;)

Crocodiles are found all over the world but alligators are only found in two countries: the US and China. So if you are swimming in the Nile or the Amazon and something clamps on and pulls you under, you can rest easy in the certainty that it was absolutely NOT an alligator.

Bats have the lowest fat ratio of any mammal. Concours riders seem to rank somewhere in the middle and Hardley Ableson rider 'ring the bell'.

You cannot fold a piece of paper in half seven times. Go ahead and try.

Note that Mythbusters finally found a way to beat this, but it required a sheet of paper half the size of an airplane hanger, a gang of people and a steam roller.

The United States had three different presidents in 1841. The first one, Martin Van Buren, finished his term as president in that year. The second, William Henry Harrison began his term as president but caught a cold and died, thus becoming the president serving the shortest time in office (4 March to 4 April 1841). The third president, John Tyler, then became the first vice president to succeed to the office of the presidency.

gerald ford is the only person who was never elected to either vp or president, yet he served as both.
