Title: Block-off plates for your C-10 (SEE LAST POST)
Post by: snarf on May 12, 2011, 05:38:22 AM
Tired of the top of your valve cover looking like a junk yard of spare parts?  I can help.  I have been making some block-off plates that takes the place of the exhaust emissions (reed valves) that sit on top of the valve cover.
They are are $20  for a set (plus screws) or $25 for a plug and play kit.  The kit includes 4 SS button head screws, rubber caps for the vacuum ports, and a plug for the air-box.  Plates are powder coated to the color of your choice.
You can get in touch with me at lilliefabrication at gmail dot com, or leave me a message here.

You can go from your stock factory set-up to this:

I can coat the plates to just about any color you desire.  Here are a few samples of what I do have on hand:

I also have a Candy Persimmons red.
Thanks for looking...

Black would be fine - unless you have LIME GREEN.  I restoring my dad's bike and it will be painted the same color as the ZRXs.  Full kit please.  Where do I send the payment?  You can email me at fhunt at pwcgov dot org.  I think I bought a used JCW case form you if I remember correctly.

Maybe a silly question as I am not very familiar with these engines yet but, what do you do for cranc case ventilation when you do this?

Nothing.... This does not alter the crank vent which is just over the transmission area. Removing the reed valves only removes a passive emissions system that allowed fresh air to enter the exhaust tract and water down (pun) the unburnt hydrocarbons thus making the emissions appear lower.

Is there any performance improvement, or is this just a cosmetic mod?
Title: Re: Block-off plates for your C-10

More of a "makes service easier" mod than anything else. Performance improvement if any would be minuscule. Makes removing the valve cover a lot easier as the air valve assy must be removed beforehand

Thanks, I had not looked into that.

You bet you lucky duck..... I'm at work; got on the boat Wed afternoon in Chicago; to which I'm still stuck in Chicago until at best tomorrow afternoon due to a broken bridge in front of us.

I got the plates on the night before last.  Started T-Cro's coils last night - only had a few minutes.  Had to cut part of the OEM watershield/seal off so the coils could fit in the sparkplug hole.  I put dielectric grease on everything.  They felt like they snapped on nice and tight.  The coolant hoses are next.  Then I'll run the wires for the coils.  Thermo is already rebuilt.  I think the hardest thing to do with the block-off kit was to get that screw-in plug for the airbox started.

Thanks go to both of you for your products!

Looking good.  What did you use to paint the valve cover?
Title: Re: Block-off plates for your C-10
Post by: RFH87_Connie on June 09, 2011, 07:11:33 AM
Scrubbed it clean, wiped with acetone, then aerosol can of 500d engine paint picked up at AutoZone (can't remember the brand.  Says its fuel "resistant".  I've used paint from Tractor Supply that said it was fuel resistant and it worked great for the life of the item, but the nearest one to me is about 40 miles.

What ever matches the valve cover the closest. I guess that would be semi-gloss?

LOL you will fit right in around here.  I take paypal at lilliefabrication at gmail dot com.  I will also accept a check.
It's $25 for the kit or $20 for the plates alone.  Shipping is included in the price.  All I need to know is what color you desire and I can get them out the door to you.
Thanks...
Chris

Just paypal'ed you. And totally forgot to mention the color.  Silver is ok, so is black, heck hot pink is ok too.   I really don't care.

Thanks again.

Well these are not for sale; but they will be door prizes at the National Rally.
Here is a sneak peak of the proto-type.  A fellow COG member is CNC engraving them up for me...

Hi there,

What would be the price of the kit (semigloss black) with shipping to Canada (Peterborough, Ontario)?

No UPS, though, please. Those guys are unbelieveable with their cross-border handling charges, etc.!

Thanks,

And what may be the effect of this for those of us living in states where we get motorcycles smog tested?
Title: Re: Block-off plates for your C-10
Post by: AZBiker on October 29, 2011, 02:44:00 AM
Shouldn't be any negative effect.  When I lived in Maricopa County I ran a bike that had aftermarket exhaust and Uni pod filters.  The smog test was a static test, not a rolling road like the cars--WAY too much liability to put a m/c through that.

Only test done was at idle.  In Maricopa County you're allowed up to 5.5%CO and 2,500ppm HC on a 4-stroke (2-strokes have their own standards), iirc.  A jet kitted bike that's a skosh on the rich side will still only run 2.5%CO.

Reasons that bikes fail emissions are improper jetting, carbs that need a rebuild or, in the case of multis, out of sync carbs.

Last time I got the connie smogged she was running about 4%CO and 2,000ppm HC.  Also was only getting 30mpg.  Bike ran horrible and still passed emissions.

If your smog test is done at idle or low RPM it is unlikely that the system would even be functioning if still installed; as air would ONLY be flowing through the reed valve system at steady engine speeds or periods of low manifold vacuum; no air flows when the throttle is closed or during periods of high manifold vacuum such as while at idle. Info culled from the Kawasaki Service Manual.........

NOTE: This is absolute proof that the removing of this system is NOT the cause of engine backfire, excessive growling, and/or burble during deceleration as under this situation the reed valve system is NOT repeat NOT passing fresh air through the exhaust.

Awesome. I'll have to look and see how the test is performed.

I thought Maricopa and Pima Counties were the only places in the US that smogged bikes.  Guess I was wrong.  Bummer.

It depends on the year of the bike here.  :P

Nevermind. I was so wrong that I'm happy! No smog testing bikes here! (I'm new to TX, which is why I didn't know.)

HOOK ME UP! I would like a set of block-off plates for my C-10, please. I would like the plug-and-play kit, and I would like that in semi-gloss black, please, unless you have a color that is pretty close to that old school ford blue from hot-rodded mustang valve cover dreams in my youth.

Paypal at the email provided, right?

Hi Snarf, I want a set of these. I will order a set of semi-gloss at the end of Feb (Bike is under cover until the March rebuild starts) but what else do you make or have sitting around for the C10?

Snarf was involved in a pretty brutal crash a few months back.  He is recovering, but has been away from the site until yesterday.  I think he is currently trying to get his business back on line according to his post.  You should perhaps send him a PM or email before placing orders.

Just my 2 cents.

I am about a healed up as I'm gonna get.
I had to sell some of my equipment to make ends while off work.  I hope to have stuff back on the market this year.

I know that SNARF has had some serious hardship recently and has not been active on this site for quite some time and I'm not entirely sure he is even making these covers anymore. Thus until it can be confirmed I'm going to lock this thread and recommend that you attempt to contact SNARF directly at (lilliefabrication @ gmail . com remove extra spaces) before making any type of payment for product and that if you have any other comments or concern that you contact me via PM...

Folks I am back.  I have been having a rough go at things but that is no excuse for the way that I treated a few of the members. For that all I can do is offer a heart felt apology.
Its time to put on the big girl panties and take life head on. Life is to short to wallow in self pity.

I'd love in blue, but honestly, black, silver, whatever I dont really care just as long as I can get that crap off the top of my motor!!

Is that email in your first post a good place to send paypal?
