Good for you Mike, and I bet it will be good for Winston too.

Brian

after about 15 or so years since my last dog I'm just going through the final phases of adopting this great big shaggy rug :)

Conrad, that really sucks. They just dont stay around long enough, do they?

In our family, it includes 3 dogs.

The one that picked me is a 3.5lb Maltese.  No reason why she picked me.  I did not want her. Im way more of  a big dog sort -of person...uh, yea..right...anyway, from day one, she just thought I was it.

If Im around, she refuses to go through the dog door.  Why do that when old stupid will get up and open the door, right?  Often times, she refuses to walk to her night bed.  Why walk when old, stupid guy will carry her?   It can be 100 degrees , but if I ask her, "are you cold", she will shiver.

Last week, she had two seizures, and it scared us to death.  We got her to the emergency vet, and he put her on some medicine. Shes doing much better.

Our 18lb Shorkie is hell on wheels. She turned the house into her own, personal Supercross track. Shes small, but can jump and climb , like a panther. The vehicle she most resembles is a helicopter.

Our old Westie is just sort of here.  She likes to think shes in charge, but the Shorkie is way too smart.

In the photo, the shorkie is watching me to see if I have food. The squirt bottle if for the Shorkie.  Some sort for discipline thing.  We dont even bother to put the bottle away. Semi worthless as the dog is fast enough to dodge the water stream.

As to your dog interacting with you, that sounds exactly right and like the training has taken extremely well. The only fault there might be that the roles were somehow reversed but hey, that is kinda' part of their charm too, isn't it?

Brian

Cheers Brian,

he's not had a particularly good start in life (hes between 4 & 5).

Was first brought to Merseyside September last year from from Ireland where he was found as a stray. From what I've been told and the vets records at the time he was in a poor condition

Went out to family late Dec/early Jan however they brought him back in March last year for showing aggressive tendencies particularly towards males. Oh and he had killed a (wild) rabbit which  upset the kids (jeeez he's a dog, it happens!!).

I first saw him online about 2 months ago and instantly fell for his scruffy dog looks). Popped down to see him and all the staff at the rescue centre were telling me he doesn't like men and will either go nuts or not come out from his 'safe' space would you prefer to see another dog

Me being bloody minded declined, found my way over to the kennel he was in , sat down on the floor outside with my back to him (resting against the bars)  and just sat there vaping for about 10 minutes until I felt a cold wet nose in the back of my neck :)

Spent a bit of time through the bars with him  before leaving and repeated this on 2 or 3 subsequent visits

On the next  visit I asked if I could see him outside his kennel, again I was told he doesn't like men and would need to be muzzled etc. Fortunately for me his main carer Kelly had seen me with him  on my previous visits (bit hard to miss wearing motorcycle gear, orange hi viz and carrying an orange helmet!!)  and made a decision to "ignore" the rules and the three of us went for a walk together. Initially with Kelly taking him then she passed him over to me, he was good as gold. Also spent some time off lead with him (Kelly in attendance) in a secure compound.

The following day I went back again and this time Kelly felt she could let me take him on and off lead on my own having been pleased with our interactions the previous day.

Then the nail biting started. I wanted to adopt but as I had holidays booked they wouldn't let me start the adoption process although they did mark me as a "provisional".

Kept popping in every couple of days to see him until I went away then the whole 2 weeks I was in Cyprus it was a daily heck to see if he had been "reserved"

Arrived back in the UK thurs last week and pretty much went straight down to see him again. It was really nice that after a 2 week break he recognised me and gave me a big excited "welcome back wee" :)

Anyways went through the adoption paperwork that day then over the following week had a one to one with a behavioural specialist (going through his "issues" and advising use of muzzle for walks , new meets etc, not to be left with "small furries")  and a home visit (Winston + Kelly) before picking him up this morning with my girlfriend along.

Good as gold in the van coming home, yes I've been out and bought (haven't owned a car for over 15 years) a Winston Wagon (or for those who know him, a Postman Pat van lol) and as he was so relaxed took him out for a little walk across the local fields earlier, again his behaviour was impeccable (no muzzle, my choice) .

And so his 3rd crack at life starts , 2 grumpy greying gits together lol

Well, given all of that I will simply say again- good on you, this time squared!

I am confident that all will be well, given that you have been tenacious in all that is and has been required of you to 'acquire' Winston.

My only caution, and it is surely and absolutely none of my business but I will say it anyway, is that you stand firm between Winston and any trouble he may get into as he has shown that he can be aggressive and perhaps a little bit over- reactive with some people. In other words, I suggest you be ever- vigilant in preventing Winston from ever getting into a situation with other humans where he could cause trouble, and in turn, have something really unfortunate happen to him. We recently had an incident in Los Angeles where police were attacked by a very aggressive pit bull; the pit bull was apparently restrained and the police 'gave ground' to ease the situation but after getting backup (more police of course) and re-addressing the initial situation, the dog again got loose and again attacked one of the L.E.O.'s (Law Enforcement Officer). Several LEO's then fired on the dog, of course, and while they were successful in stopping the dog from attacking by shooting him, a ricochet off the street killed a 17 year old youth, apparently trying to regain control of the dog. So the kid is dead, the dog is wounded but alive (though it is extremely unlikely that condition will continue for long), one LEO was bitten, and one LEO was hit by shrapnel, apparently from another LEO's shots. The point being of course that you, as the dog's owner, are the one tasked with keeping Winston from getting himself into trouble in the first place. But I am confident you will do well given you efforts so far with this dog.

Enjoy Winston and both of you should benefit......

Brian

thanks for the sage words Brian.

I'm going to be as vigilant when out with him as I am riding the bike :)

Actually speaking of bike that was the only "adverse" reaction when we were out. Wasn't too keen on a chap in lycra coming the other way pushing a mountain bike, what was interesting is that he "adverse" reaction wasn't aggression rather he (Winston that is) made a point of putting me between himself & the cyclist.

Otherwise didn't bat an eyelid at anyone else including kids or dogs.

He will be on a lead at all times (got a 10m extension/running/retractable lead) other than when I go to the local Doggy Country Club once a week, they have large secure fields you can hire privately with noone else in them(unless you choose to take anyone that is).

well that was a pretty good first night from Winston.

Moved his bed out to the kitchen, encouraged him out the back (although othing done) and went up to bed.

Initially he followed me up and tried jumping on my bed but soon went back downstairs when told firmly.

I left my door slightly ajar and he spent the next 15 minutes  prowling up and down the stairs every couple of minutes before finally curling up (not on his bed) at the foot (I was watching on camera) . There was then around 10 minutes of throwing one of his balls around before he settled down on his bed.

I was probably watching for another 30-40 mintes before I went to sleep.

I woke up just before 5 (not because of any noise from WInston but because I had too :D ) and he came up to say good morning.

Came back down with him and was pleased to see no little (or in his case not so little) parcels for me although he had had a small wee(it's a stone floor so no panics)  . Opened up the back door for him before going back to bed myself.

He followed me back up and lay at the side of the bed for a few minutes before going back to his own (although he did come back and check on me a couple of times) where he stayed until I got up to make his breakfast.

Really happy with that and that there was no noise from him all night :)

Excellent Mikey great to see that Winston has found a good home   :)

He's settled in really well,. First night was as up there(little bit of faffing but nothing major). Second night he went straight on his bed when I went up , 3rd & 4th nights he's just taken himself off to his bed at around 21:00 ish without any prompting.

Been no messing in the house , prefers a grass surface to poop on and even when I had to go in to the office for the morning on Monday there was no noise from him apart from a bit of a bark at next doors window cleaner (I've got a monitor plus Barbara is keeping an ear out for me).

Other than pulling a  pyrex dish containing chicken in honey & mustard sauce off the kitchen worktop yesterday evening (thats my fault for leaving it there, was leftovers I was going to pop in the fridge when cooled) he's not chewed or damaged anything apart from his toys :)

Been brilliant out on walks and been so good I've been comfortable letting him off lead (am lucky we have some big open fields with good visibility) and he also seems happy socialising at the pub halfway round his evening walk :)  (that might be the porky scratchings)

Great- really nice to hear you two are doing well.

Your and Winston's story has me thinking about the whole dog thing. But this is just not the right time for us so I am being pretty firm (!!) in my resolve to [not] acquire a pet right now.

Know where you're coming from. Been 15 years or so since my last dog and I've been moving around and in rented accommodation.

Pretty much settled here now plus working from home at least 50% of the week so it does make it easier.

That all makes perfect sense.

I can work from home also but my home is more of a..... kit right now..... some assembly required. A pet, even a large dog, would likely get stuck or hurt in the current mess, and likely get loose repeatedly with all the things and people coming and going through the house. Plus, it would be pretty irresponsible of me to get an adult dog of unknown or even a bit touchy temperament, as you mention Winston is or at least has been in the past, and parade a bunch of strangers past it; it really raises the risk that someone might have an incident with the dog and both the person and the dog suffer because of it. So I am minding my manners and busily NOT procuring any pets, which has happened totally by mistake in the past. My last dog came home with me while I was getting a load of firewood, and I only grabbed him to take him to the local pound (public dog holding area, not sure if that word works in the UK or not?) so he literally would not freeze to death. Somehow he never quite got to the pound though.  ;)
