Post by: Murph on May 19, 2011, 04:36:53 PM
Well guys

after a little fiddling' I've decided we are going to machine a part or two for this project.  Its going to kick the delivery time back a few weeks  but.. 8)  If you want a new shift lever already converted let me know.  Also open to doing a core charge deal.

Whew...Well we have most of the parts now, two machined spacers, three bearings, two stainless steel shims and a new Zinc 10.9 washer bolt ..I've been doing some really long hours guys and have no photos but wanted to let you know its pretty much done. I'll have some brand new shifters fitted with the whole set up or you can just get the above mentioned parts, for right now please just email me for the details (murphatmurphskits.com) We will be offering a "core" exchange if these get as popular as I think they will. Also, in the "shifting" of the forums deal I lost the information on who the first person was to mention these, if they will contact me I'll get the credits up as we metioned via emails..cause right now I can't even find your email  :P

Details?? ..L.. I was hoping to work in a photo shoot and write the instructions today but that didn't happen.

But here ya go.. For all the parts shown in the photo below you have to send murph $20 8), If you want me to send you a shifter all bearinged up and ready to bolt on that will set you back $90. If you choose that option and send me your shifter I'll credit you $50, or if you want to send me your shifter and have me install the parts and ship it back to you, that will be $35...

Hows that?

Just went to your web site to order a kit...

http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=130 (http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=130)

Could not find shift bearing kit ...

How do we order? (Do we just send you an email or paypal?)

Title: Re: Bearinged up shifter
Post by: Murph on June 12, 2011, 10:19:21 AM

They aren't on the site yet for now I'll take a few orders via paypal.

For the order it is
Stainless shim, bearing, bushing, bearing, bushing, bearing and stainless shim.
When you have the shifter off the bike its easy to knock out the plastic bushing. I opened my vice jaws wide enough for the bearing to pass through and knocked it out using a 1/2in bolt and small hammer.
After that I took the first bearing, and using the vise, pushed it in from one side. Remove the shifter with its one new bearing, and using the bolt place the rest of the assembly in the hole from the opposite end. The bearing you have installed will act as a guide for the rest.  Place a socket on the side that has the new bearingso the bolt can pass through, push on the bolt head with the vise, and when you feel it get "snug" your there..

Hows that?
I've got a list of  "have too" projects today but hope I make it to havingthis listed at the site tonight..till then paypal will work. I have the parts to sent out three shifters complete and about 13 more bearing kits..

Let me know

A heads up, the packs your getting doesn't have any instructions, and the nut thats on the end of the bolt is just to keep the parts in place, it is not used on the bike...BEcareful not to loose the little stainless shims that are on each end..

Using Murphs suggestion for pressing in the new bearing/spacer stack, the removal of the old shifter sleeve/bolt, pressing in of new bearing/spacer stack, and reinstall of the shifter was a sub-10 minute process.  Shifter is rock solid now.  No play.

Title: Re: Bearinged up shifter

I installed mine today....old style "non-sexy" bolt, but no biggie. Bearings fit the shifter perfectly. Slightly more pressure than fingers needed to push them in place, but not much more.  The bike shifter well before, but is amazing now.  The play from the lever is gone.

Got the shifter, and got it installed.
Love it!!!

I thought the notchy shifting was me being lazy...
pulled the shifter, cleaned and lubed, and it was better.

Got Murphs bearinged up shifter...
and it is significantly better than a cleaned and lubed.

Shifting is much more precise, and "cleaner".

No dissappointment here!!!

I installed mine yesterday. The install went smoothly, simple, just the say I like it. I didn't get a chance to try it out yesterday cuz I was having a few beers while I was working on the bike. I won't be trying it today either, it's storming at the moment.

The shifter feels nice and solid though.

Murph...just because you have bankers hours arriving at 11:30 am.....and question the hex bolts not being very sexy...that is NO excuse!  I called you twice yesterday...long answering machine....have money for you.....all you have to do is call me back to get some of it....

Looks like a great accessory...will sell a ton of them...especially if there is a sexier bolt rather than a hex head on it...maybe an allen head bolt will match all the other bolts on the C-14 would be more attractive....send me the allen type if you can find one ....

and as the message on the answering machine says it can be very hard for me to return a call...While ya'll know me as a hawker of motorcycle parts, theres another well paying customer thats required my attention 36 of the last 48 hours, and needs several more hours of my time the next two days.  The commit on the the orginal "sexy" bolt was tonque in cheek...  The kit is listed on the website, if your order comes through there I would bet Patty has it underway in less that 48 hours.

So if you could let me know via another email..I'll take care of that as well.

As ya'll thats been following this thread know, some non-motorcycle stuff has drilled me ( one more killer day) and I hope to get everything back in its place this weekend.   I'm pretty sure Patty has everything taken care of as far as orders via the site, its just those emails pretaining to "special" offers ole murph made that may be parked :P

as Patty has said about 30 times this year "quit doing that" ???

Thanks again

I received my bearing kit today. (ordered Wednesday). I wouldn't think that there would be much difference in feel due to my bike having just over 3k on it. I was wrong. Shifting is effortless. Up and down. Thanks Murph. Best $20.

Hey guys....
You early birds that dropped  me a note on wanting the "sexy" bolt, they are on the way..along with with a shim to the fellow that lost one  ;D..  If you think it's worth it, about $3 from paypal will cover my cost.

Murph, I was the one that emailed you earlier about losing a shim. just saw the post and I sent you an email to say it was me and then saw another post that you had sent it out. Does that mean you found my email or did someone else lose one too?

Hey folks,

I have a few emails wanting to know why the BUS (bearinged up shifter) has not turned up in some mail boxes.  Very sorry as I have been out of the office and not able to respond to all the emails. We have had one part on back order so it kinda shut things down for a few days. After a hefty next day air shipping fee we are back in the biz of sending folks this product...

Oh, and...
DO NOT, forget to use loc-tite on the bolt.  ::)  I didn't have any around when I did the install, figured to just do it at lunch, the next day at work. (Got enough loc-tite in my tool box to do a fleet of bikes). Oops, forgot. Almost lost the "pretty" bolt while riding a few days later. :o

Any pictures of it installed or being installed?

Doesn't really look any different installed except for a slightly smaller diam. bolt head. The install is pretty straight forward. Remove original bolt, press out bushing, press in bearings and spacers, install shim on either end of the installed bearings slide in new bolt, apply some loc-tite, tighten and you're good to go. It did not take much more than light force to remove the bushing and install the bearings / spacers.

I don't like posting this here but I would like to resolve the problem. I sent Murph payment via PayPal on the 16th for this kit. Then on the 23rd I ordered Two Throttle Rockers and had asked that they be sent together. All paymrnts went thru. So far I have received One Throttle Rocker and NO Bearinged up Shifter kit. I called and emailed with all the details as soon as I received the One Throttle Rocker but have gotten no responses.

He's on vacation, which is probably part of the no response problem. I have a shifter on order, should be in the mail now. Crossing fingers and toes . . .

To avoid misperceptions and worry in the future, we should ask Murph to post up when he's out of town.

BRILLIANT IDEA #3 !!!!

My records indicate we responded with an email the 28th explaining your order had been confused with another. As mentioned  on a post here, and noted by alpha, we had a supply problem on an item for the kits that has been resolved. I have also had an auto responder on our mail, and a note on the site we were out of the office and not shipping for a few days, which is over.  I did get your email from last night, but only about an hour ago. I do recall a left phone message, to which I thought the 1st email addressed. I'll have your parts headed north tomorrow.   ;)

Thanks Murph, you are correct, you did send me an email explaining the delay, which I missed. Thanks for the great service, great products,  and prompt follow up.

Strange this topic hasn't come up in *8 years*.  Anyway, I just installed Murph's "Bearinged Up" triple ball-bearing shifter today.   Haven't ridden yet, that will be tonight.  The instructions are a bit odd (nothing uses a 5mm allen wrench), but it was easy.  I would say the instructions added confusion and delay, but even with that, it took maybe 15-20 min.  Now that I know what to do, it would take maybe 5 min.  Fit well- but the bearings weren't terribly tight- I could push the bearings in with my finger without too much effort.  The web site says it might be necessary to "lock tite the bearings to the shifter", but I didn't bother.  It feels very solid.  Put the old parts in a little baggie and added it to the collection of "original stuff".

The bolt shipped now is black instead of silver.  Isn't terribly pretty but I don't care much :)

Even though I do have this same (older version) farkle on my C14, I have to think that this is the most un-needed almost un-noticable farkle ever created for the C14.
This is the farkle you chose to get your tools out and work on installing, instead of changing your air filter? Ha!  ;D

:)  That is probably why it took me 8 years to get to it!  At least it is cheap and easy.

Well, there are things I can do alone and with reasonable effort, and things I can't.  Filter has been here and ready, it will be installed when I do all the other stuff pending "under the covers."  On my ZRX, it was a matter of removing the seat (10 seconds), removing the filter cover (30 seconds), and putting in the filter (5 seconds).  On the Concours, fitted with fallover bars, it can be a multi-hour "experience" (depending on how cooperative it is).

Haven't ridden yet, that will be tonight.

So, 2 trips, > 100 miles later.  Good news and bad.  The good news: Wow!  It really DOES make a noticeable and pleasant difference/improvement!  I should have done it ages ago.

Now the bad:  A 1mm+ gap had opened up and it was no longer snug.  I checked the bolt and it was still at 10ftlbs.  Backed it out some and there was considerable and continuous resistance.  So I tightened it to 15, then 20 and it was solid and the gap gone.  Called my mechanic friend and he told me if that was going into aluminum, I should not have gone above 12 or so or risk stretching the threads (too late now), and I don’t know if it is going into aluminum, but it probably is.  He also told me that by turning the bolt at all, I broke the lock-tite, and asked if I had cleaned the bolt before using the lock-tite.  I said "no", the instructions said nothing about that.  We debated if I should remove it, clean it, reapply locktite, and risk [additional, if there is any] damage, or just leave it alone now and monitor.  I opted for leaving it alone....

:(

Hi Maxtog

I wouldn't worry too much about breaking the lok tite seal.
That stuff is pretty good. Although not as good as when it originally sets up it should still offer some
"stick" to the threads.
Keep an eye on it and see if it loosens.  :)

Well I cant leave well enough alone so I ordered one. Time for oil change so shifting is not as smooth. Going to try this out before oil change just to see if any difference.

Well, don't tighten it to 20ftlbs like I did...

fyi; When I installed my bearinged up shifter it would move in and out slightly {as the bearings were not tight in the shifter}.
  {I think this may be what caused the gap that Maxtog had}
Murph had me put Loc Tite on the OD of the bearings.
(I think I used Surperglue Gel as that was what I had)
That prevented that little movement of the bearings inside the shifter.
Problem solved.

Ride safe, Ted

I was under the assumption that the movement meant that it wasn't tight enough.  There certainly isn't any movement now. :/

Well I finally got to test the bearing up. 12 days of a nasty virus. Finally feeling a bit better. My bike had a lot of slop. with over 60,000 on it it is understandable. The little plastic bushing was badly worn. Bearings fit nicely in mine. Did toss in a little loctite.

A great improvement on my bike. Real happy with it. May not be needed but if you have a high mileage bike and your shifter flops around.........
