I will share what brought me to that particular jet (the VJ 101).

I was doing a google search for Century fighters, and saw a reference to a XF-109.  This led me to the Bell D-188A, which has swivel engine mounts for VTOL operations on the wingtips.

Unfortunately, Bell didn't make a full scale working/flightworthy jet version of this design, so the only pics I could find were primarily models and static displays.

However, this led me to the discussion about similar craft, and the VJ 101 came to my attention.

Two VJ 101's were built.  One crashed during testing, and the other one was eventually put into a museum.

Notable achievements of this model (from the Wiki) were achieving Mach 1.04 without afterburners, multiple aerodynamic flights, hover tests, and transistions. All of this was achieved in the early 1960's, and of course provided valuable flight testing data for future VTOL jets on the drawing boards in various countries.

All in all a very fascinating aircraft.

So why didn't they go with the more modern and efficient 777 instead of the 767?

777 is larger and quite a bit more expensive than the 767.  I'm sure that there are other differences that made Boeing and USAF decide on that platform.  This decision came to be in the early 2000's and that may have had something to do with it.

Cool! I'm about a 4 hour ride from this. Or about a 1 hour flight in my brothers Mooney.

Breaking news in the UK...and Europe

http://www.defense.gov/Releases/Release.aspx?ReleaseID=17097

Mildenhall, Alconbury, and Molesworth to close.  KC-135s at Mildenhall will be relocated to Germany.  F-35s will be based at Lakenheath when they become operational.  Operations at Alconbury and Molesworth (communications) will most likely be moved to RAF Croughton.

I wonder which base will be the entry point for military families coming and going?

Also, Lajes will be scaled back by 500 personnel.

I guess all of this is inevitable as the world changes and the technology improves.  Just don't need the bases anymore.  It's sad really

Remaining bases not slated for closure yet:  Lakenheath, Croughton, Welford, Menwith Hill, and Fairford.

Actions will take place in Germany with some resources being moved to Aviano.

If it is, he is one of the best pilots I've ever seen.  Course there is the story about the Delta Dart landing itself after the pilot ejects..
