Name that spot
« on: August 27, 2011, 09:58:11 PM »
So I spent the afternoon running around some desolate back roads I've never been on before, but have been looking at on the maps for awhile.  When I ride, I almost never stop just to take a picture, but since I inadvertently made a gigantic loop, and was coming back up the same road I was just on an hour before, I couldn't resist.

Any PNW locals want to take a guess at where I was when I took this pic?  Anyone?  For a hint, I was only about 35 miles from my driveway.   ;D

Wow, nobody even guessed?  Oh well, here's a couple more from that day.  The first is just an example of the roads I was riding (at least the paved ones).  The second is a shot from Lost Lake.  I now know why they called it that.  It's so well hidden up in the mountains, you need a road to it with signs to find it again.

Enjoy!

Wow, nobody even guessed? ...

N. of Cascade Locks, or near that big river on the WA/OR border E. of Portland and still on the wet side... barely, and S. of Mt. St. Helens. The exact road is beyond me, but am certain I'm close :)

I want to say between Trout Lake (city) and Elk Meadows campground.  Quigley Butte would be off to the right a bit.

Wow, lots of good guesses!  The mountain is Mount Hood, looking at it from the West / Northwest side.   ;D

The road was Lolo Pass road.  There's a 5 mile stretch that turns into a Jeep trail, but nothing the C14 couldn't handle (though I did scrape bottom in one spot).  BTW, when off roading a C14, standing up and riding it motocross style really works.  ::)

The first pic was taken somewhere around here :  http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Portland,+OR+97086&hl=en&ll=45.427401,-121.807179&spn=0.02783,0.046563&sll=45.515489,-122.663555&sspn=0.027786,0.030212&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=15

The pic of Lost Lake was taken here : http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Portland,+OR+97086&hl=en&ll=45.49574,-121.822406&spn=0.001737,0.00291&sll=45.515489,-122.663555&sspn=0.027786,0.030212&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=19

The third pic was taken here : http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Portland,+OR+97086&hl=en&ll=45.545523,-121.75633&spn=0.003471,0.00582&sll=45.515489,-122.663555&sspn=0.027786,0.030212&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=18

The aerial photos do not do the terrain justice as far as how steep the drop off is along the road.  Every bend in the road is due to a cliff.

Zooming out gives the perspective of where the mountain is.
