To Newfoundland!
« on: June 11, 2014, 11:48:10 AM »
I'm on my way to Newfoundland.

Here's a link to the whole gallery:
http://dolomoto.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/2014-HNBAS-tour

Here's some of the first few days:

Initially, the plan was for Caleb and I to leave together:

But,  he was feeling a bit under the weather so I struck out solo and he joined me in NYC.

The first night,  I rode to Willville.

Fritz camped with me.

Dan's Pavilion is looking good:

We ran into Bruce,  who is the owner of a well put together Airhead.

Bruce' s Airhead is sweet enough to get its own photo:

We stopped at Devils Backbone brewery for lunch.

We split there and I continued on to Hatton Ferry and to ride Skyline Drive.

I've been meaning to do Hatton Ferry,  it was a neat experience.

I camped at Loft Mountain CG in Shenandoah NP. Eh,  many of the sites are "walk in" and many do not have bear boxes. Still,  I humped my stuff down the hill to my campsite. It was a MILE to the showers and toilets.  I won't be camping there again

As for Skyline Drive, it was awesome! Certainly no sport riding but the great pavement and scenery was worth it.  I have an annual park pass so it costs me nothing to ride it.

Awesome!  I was wondering what happened to your son.  Saw him at the beginning and then nothing until the Pizza.  Have a great ride!

The third night,  I made it to Promised Land SP,  Greentown PA. Its an awesome CG and a CCC project which is always a good sign.

Fantastic campsites

I stayed there two nights.  While JRA, I saw this place and was pleasantly surprised to find a real butcher shop.

They make their own sausage, it was outstanding!

I had to fight my way thru NYC traffic to pick up my son at Laguardia. It costs about $20 to get into the city, and about $10 to leave.  Traffic sucked.

After fighting I-95 traffic for three hours and seeing too many dead deer, we hotel camped in Hartford.

Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, or Newfoundland the island?...lol.

If you're going to the island, you're in for a real treat....the icebergs are crazy this year!

You'll be passing right by me in NS. If you need anything up this way, or if there's anything I can help with, just shout.

We left Bar Harbor and rode across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We observed that while in the rest of the world a 40% chance of rain means you will probably be dry, in the Maritimes,  a 40% chance of rain means it is raining 40% all the time.  LOL.

We took the scenic route thru Joggins and camped in Cape Chinecto Provincial Park. The nice lady at the desk told us: "oh sure,  you can ride your motorbike right to the campsite."

She must be thinking of some other motorbike!

We endured a 4km slog up a muddy but well graded gravel road. In the rain. Loaded 2up for camping.  Ugh.

We still had a good time around the campfire.

The next morning,  we stopped in Advocate Bay and found this gas station/grocery store/restaurant.

Beans for breakfast? Hell yeah!

We got in line for the Ferry from North Sydney NS to Argentia Newfoundland. It is a 17 hour ride and we got a cabin. It was about $400.

We arrived Newfoundland well rested and ready to seize the day!

It was a beautiful day to ride!

We made for St John, found that there was a CG right in town. Pitched our tent (quickly) and went back to the harbor for a boat tour.

The Icebergs were spectacular! This one was "grounded out" on the ocean floor (500' depth). It was a small iceberg.

This one was a bit larger, 4/5 of it is underwater. Wow.

The next day, we made it to the Easternmost point in North America...Cape Spear and it's lighthouse.

The main link has many more photos.

We continued across Newfoundland to Gros Morne NP.

Spectacular.

The Tablelands were magnificent.

We made our way from Gros Morne to Port Aux Basque. It was nice scenery.

Our last night in Newfoundland was celebrated with steak and beer.

I found a Canadian only moto model.

Lining up for the return ferry was painless. It was only a 7 hour ride so we did not get a cabin. There were mostly RV's and semi's on the ferry.

'Twas quite easy to secure the moto, there were lots of tiedowns with rope extensions. Still, I had brought my own tie down extensions.

Our last view of Newfoundland!

This was a welcome sight!

Sadly, I had a tire issue. (sigh). My TPMS batteries **** the bed at around 40k and I never replaced them. Well, I should have checked my TP more often...since I didn't check the TP every day, I did not notice the rear tire going down. It was a new tire at the start of the trip but one day of riding it mostly flat completely ruined it.

So, I put some Slime in it and saw that it was holding pressure and we made for Savannah. I took it quite easy in the corners and although a bit warm (about 90), it was a good trip Home.

5449.4 miles.

The C14 turned 75k and ran perfect. Still gets about 43mpg. A cager backed into me (?) at a stop sign and knocked me over. Luckily, there were only battle scars on the fairing and no permanent damage (was worried about the saddlebag latches).

I've added Murphs peg extensions and Fast Larry's passenger footpeg extensions...well worth the $$. The Bead Rider seatcovers were awesome.

It was a great trip!

I am a believer in TPMS.  The easiest flat tire I've ever got was on the Concours.  I was able to safely pull over and get it on the center stand before it went flat.  I am now looking at aftermarket systems to put on my other bikes.
