Canberra to the Sky...

and more detail on Canberras...

A neat blog I ran across in regards to Chuck Yeager's time commanding a wing at Clark with B-57's and how he had Canberra outfitted without tip tanks but with internal aux fuel tank in the bomb bay and was so fast, F-100's with external fuel tanks had to use afterburner to stay with him.

Really?  I read the article but waxing and putting the tank in the fuselage I find hard to believe that an F-100 had trouble keeping up with him in a B-57.

B-57 top speed is 598 with cruise at 476.  Thrust to weight ratio is .36
F-100 top speed is 877 with cruise at 587. Thrust to weight ration is .55

Kind of hard to believe that wax and removing the drop tanks could affect the speed that much, but anything I guess is possible.  And I'm a bomber person, I want the bombers to be better....

IDK, at 500mph+, that's a lot of drag hanging out there. I had a friend that flew F-15's, F-16's in the Air Force, then went to a National Guard unit and for a short time flew F-106's before they transitioned to F-16's. He said he loved the 106 because it carried its ordinance internally. Said he preferred the 106 clean to the 16 dirty. Since the B-57 doesn't have after burner and I would also assume has longer range, I could believe that Yeager pushed up the cruise speed at the expense of fuel to make his point. In any case, still a good story  ;)

Absolutely!  Ferry range on an F-100 is about 1994 miles vs 2720 on a B-57, but I'm sure that's using cruising speed or less.  The F-100s using after burners would shorten their ferry range enormously.

Yeah, I saw that on FB.  Makes you think.  I haven't been back there since 1968.  Planning on going next year.   We had a large presence on the Isle...  Not so much anymore.  Mildenhall is closing as are some other bases.

Ah yes, the B-29....little brother to the B-36.  Lots of B-29 stuff integrated into the B-36.

Fifi soon to be joined in the air by Doc. A second airworthy B-29 named "Doc" just received an airworthy cert. First flight eminent.

Went fishing this morning on the Merrimack River -

About 10 AM I hear a distant rumble which I knew was the big girl in town this weekend.  Fifi flew right over me a few thousand feet up.  What a sound from those engines.

Then a little while later this one flew over

Then the rain came and I went home.

Looks like the smaller of the two is sporting D-Day colors.  I can't tell what the larger one is.

I don't know what the fish is but the 4 engine bomber looks like a B-29. If so, it is either Fifi or slight possibility it is the newly restored "Doc". The second is a Beech 18 I think.

I think you're right on with the B-29.  It's got a narrow fuselage...

Yup and long, high aspect ratio wings. Rare sight these days to randomly see one flying over.

Confirmed! Fifi was in Nashua this weekend, June 8-12. And on the same tour is a Beech 18 with invasion stripes.
