Not an F-15 but i had a lot of fun flying around in this.  Ive always loved the sound of the P-51, I've attended the Reno air races many times and never get tired of the sights and sounds of that!  Rare Bear, an F8F had the best sound when it would go past, you could hear the prop pulse as it cut through the air.

Final flight and retirement ceremony of the F4 Phantom set for Dec 21 at Hollowman AFB NM:

I had a friend that flew against F-4's at Red Flag in an F-15 in the 80's and at that time said the F-4 was still a formidable opponent.

Some info regarding its final military roll as a full scale target manned and unmanned:

That is absolutely amazing- thanks for posting that! I had no idea they were still in any kind of active service in the US, especially since the Naval replacement (the F-14) has been retired and the A.F. replacement is being phased out (F-15).

A big, brutal airplane IMO- not the least bit slick or graceful. Not pretty but extremely businesslike and formidable. Still, they were effective and performed very well and I think proved themselves to be as tough as they look like they ought to be. More like something that would come out of Grumman ("The Ironworks") rather than McDonnell.

Also the last fighter that made anyone an 'ace' in the US.

The same buddy that flew F-15's got out of the Air Force and went to the NJ ANG (he eventually retired a Maj General and commander of the NYANG) flew 106's for a year before they moved to F-16's. He said he loved the 106 because it carried its missiles internally and you flew it clean.

Awesome! I want one. But these do not appear to be dual control and according to Wikipedia the empty weight is 14,000 lbs so this means it requires a type rating to fly it. How do you get a type rating on an F-104 when there are no dual control aircraft flying? And I would bet there aren't any category (5 or 6?) simulators for this aircraft.

My mistake, when I zoomed in on a pick of the expensive one it is a dual seat. I guess you just need to find an CFI with 104 type rating.

Two F-104s for sale on Trade-A-Plane:

The spendy one in Arizona has been owned by the same owner (Mark Shermann) for many years (saw a TV report on him way back in the 80s I think). The ad says nothing about being currently airworthy so I would guess it is out of annual (who does annuals on F-104s these days?). Years ago the availability of tires was a big issue since they have a very limited number of take-offs and landings before they MUST be replaced. No sources for these and it cost (back then) over $70,000 just to start up the manufacturing line for these super special high pressure tires.

Also, another big issue was the engine sucking up dirt and/or sand off the runway knicking the turbine blades during take-off. It was common practice during the operational life of the F-104 to sweep the runway prior to take-off.

I think I remember that TV show. He said he needed 10 hours of maintenance on the ground for every hour in the air. Special tires is a consequence of very high landing and takeoff speeds I guess. Maybe PR4's with their >167 mph rating could be fitted (never mind the weight rating)  ;D

This is the quote out of my WarbirdTech book on the F-104 on tires:

"Tires can be one of the more critical parts to obtain, because they typically only last about 15 landings. When your supply of tires is gone, you are looking at a $75,000 custom tire order from Goodyear."

My recollection (I'm looking for sources to substantiate) is there was very little room to house the retracted landing gear in the lower fuselage and super-high pressure, narrow tires were required.

BTW, my Dad was an aircraft tooling specialist on the F-104 while he was working for Lockheed Aircraft. It was a lot of fun to go visit him on the assembly line in those days.

Speaking of aircraft tires, I can't tell you how many times I've been by this place in the past...
