Title: Let's see your dog
Post by: Gsun on September 27, 2011, 09:46:43 PM
Inspired by another thread, let's see your dog. Or other creature you have about.

Mine is Georgia - a red bone coon hound. Got her as a rescue a couple of months ago. About seven years old. She was in a kill shelter about to be put down for no reason! Mellow and sweet.

My 2 Y.O. Belgian Malinois. She's a great dog, and super smart  ;D

Smart enough to find your neighbor's stash of maryjane or smart enough to tear up any unwelcome guests.  My money is on both.   ;D  Great looking dogs, there are quite a few of them used as MWD's.  Smart and mean as all get out.

@Snarf:
My parents have an American Bulldog and she is just a beast.  I wish I had a pic, but her head is probably 10 inches wide and her shoulders are almost as broad as mine. Just a rippling ball of muscle that is gentle as can be.

Watch out for the huge 7 lb terror which is Bella.
Actually one of the sweetest Chihuahuas I've met.
Nearly the perfect dog, even if she looks like a rat.

Meet Rylie, he's 15 years old and was rescued by us as a puppy.

Bella's a beagle, about 2 years old, quite energetic.
Our 16 years old beagle named Bella !!! just passed away...she'll be missed a lot...
I'm looking at the picture of your beagle and she's a split image of our Bella!!! Did you get her from Shirley Dowser in Metcalfe by any chance?

I love dogs, they just don't work with my son's asthma.  I had 4 bulldogs growing up.  But my favorite dog was a beagle/rat terrier mix.  He was sharp as a whip and he knew it.  He would hear me coming down the block (I might have listened to my stereo a little loud back then) and open the door to meet me.  Now my parents and grandparents both have rat terriers that remind me of him every time I see them.

Yeah Chunk weighs in right at 125lbs. Our two yr old granddaughter is completely and utterly in love with him. He truly is a gentle giant with her.  The person that ever decides to hurt that little girl had better pray to the good Lord that he is not around when it happens (of course I get whats left of them). He gets down right grumpy when she cries.

Thanks, the Airedale/Kerry Blue terriers and mini Schnauzer would be the only ones from that list that I would think about.  My wife's family raised greyhounds when she was growing up (parents both had full time jobs).  She and her sisters did most of the hard work with them so she isn't much of an animal lover since so much was forced on her when she was young.  I am still working on her though.  It might be after our kids are more grown up but I am still working on her.   ;)

I know a few K-9 malinois'. They are awesome pups. My girl is a total sweetheart though, but she certainly looks the part. Quite rare in CO as "pets", as I've only seen one other so far. I also have a black lab/border collie, but he's just a putz, lol.

We have 3 dogs. Bosco (black and tan smooth coat mini Dachshund) is the oldest at 8. Agnes (half long haired red mini Dachshund half Yorkie) 4 years old and Sookie (half long haired red mini Dachshund half Yorkie) 3 years old. This makes Agnes and Sookie Dorkies.

Agnes and Sookie are sisters, same mom and dad, but one litter apart. Those two are rescues and inseparable. Sookie is a fetching fool and lives for it. She'll bring her ball back to you EVERY time and all you have to do is to put your hand out and she'll gently put the ball in your hand.

Here is Zack demonstrating several acceptable ways to use a couch:

And with a little effort, you can actually sneak up and lay down on Mon while she is taking a nap apparently:

He doesn't always sleep on the couch- sometimes he sleeps in bed or even <gasp> on the floor. Here he is hanging out with Kirby while basking in the glow of both KiPass and the woodstove....

True story...

Wife and I babysit dogs for friends when they are out of town. Good friend was getting ready for a trip, and was at the Vet setting up the credit card for us to have no issues if we need to take the dog in while they are gone. He's filling out the form and it asks for the maximum figure we are allowed to charge of something happens. Friend calls his wife and asks, "how much should I write in this question?" Wife says, "turn the paper sideways, write the number 8 and give the form back to the vet. Nothing is happening to my dog while we are away."

Here is the shelter report on my dog:

Anxiety displayed.  Environmentally focused, does not solicit attention, moves away - wants to exit, no affiliation with handler. Tolerated handling. Arousal increases with touch. Head whip on lip lift. Growl when handling feet. Stiff for ears and paws. No other options but EUTH.

Ok, if you got a dog in that was dumped off by the only family she knew for 7 years, had severe dental decay requiring extractions, skin problems, claws growing under her paws, and food anxiety from probably not getting regular meals, how do you think she will react????
There are no problems with her - she is a great hound! The author of the report should be EUTH.

When I was younger we took in a female Cocker Spaniel.  The owners were getting rid of her because she started nipping and biting their 3yr old granddaughter. When we got her home we gave her a good look-over.  Her ears were so full of ticks you couldnt even see the ear canals.  Guess what she did when we lifted, bumped, or touched her ears....yup she got REAL pissed off. It took a vet and one good tranquilizer to get the ticks out. After that; that girl would walk through fire for you.  I love dogs :'(

Alright- we have seven dogs. King of the house is Little Man. His buddy is Cierra; she keeps him company. My top dog is Skipper, shown coming home from the vet after a sick day. My wrecking crew is (left to right) Striper, Pepper, and Sally (mom to those two). Sally had a litter of nine that we kept for several years but things happen. We have one more, not shown; Pumpkin, a big collie mix. My wife and I used to take in strays and rescues and had 28 dogs at one time once. Those were heady days.

They listed her as a Shepherd Collie mix but that didn't seem quite right to us so we decided that she might be a Keeshond-Shepherd mix, but whatever she is, she has a lot of Keeshond traits
When we got her home she still had the predominately black face. We had everyone put names in a hat and my grandson did the drawing and "Buffy" became Lola.

She is 11 now and still jumps but not like she used to. She used to go out the back door and make three deer type leaps in series like she was trying to scare up game
or something. If she gets real excited she now does about two leaps, but it's rare. She still loves to play. I hope she'll stick around another 5 years or so at least.

Gotta coat for that naked wiener for those cold winters up there?

Oh yes, several. Some even might still fit. (She's put on some pounds)
She loves the snow, but not the cold. Once it's above 35* she will stay out quite a while with me snooping around the woods. Colder than that and it's only go out as needed.

It means he is bred from a line of 'working' gundogs, the working expression means that he is bred to work rather than only be a domestic pet, it also means that he is very willing to be trained and is probably a lot stronger more powerful dog than the 'average' domestic pet, he also has a natural ability to work

In our case we wont be working Oscar because I'm now too old and knackered  to be walking over mountains in pursuit of game birds (Pheasant and Grouse)  so apart from long walks and easy tasks he is a domestic pet

In the past I have had working dogs that purely live outdoors and only come out of their kennels when being taken to do some work for example beating or picking up on shoots

Hope that explains things a bit better  :)

Cody.  A Silky Terrier born on Christmas Eve of 1999.  He has retired now and moved to Myrtle Beach with my mother after my dad passed away a few years back.  He's having some pretty big health issues and i'm getting pretty worried for him.  I'm also worried for mom, as he has become her constant companion.

It was actually Abby.  We've had for 5 years, since she was 10 months old.  But we had a lot of changes go on in the last year.  We lost 2 of our pack, moved, and wife went from being home all day to working.  Though recently we seem to be noticing she seems to have a panic attack when the fridge makes a popping sound, smh...  Crazy thing is I can still say she's the sweetest dog I've ever had.  Well, so long as you're not a wall, or a crate...

This last March we had to have our black lab Casey put down because of a spine problem. That was very tough especially since he was on 6.5 years old. Shortly after he was gone my wife and I both decided that after about a year we were going to get a puppy pit bull and it was going to be female.

Fast forward one month. I came home early from work and was talking with my wife in the front yard when two dogs came running into my yard. One of those dogs was small and kind of bronze colored. She was super friendly and came right up to us wagging her tail a mile a minute. I was holding her and petting her and I noticed this terrible smell coming from her. I held her back to see what was up and it ended up that she had a collar on her that was super tight and had rubbed her her neck terribly raw and festering and was really putrid. The first thing I did was gently take it off her neck and then we took her inside.

My wife and I were looking at each other and I kinda gave her that look that said what do you think and she said yes, lets keep her. So first thing we did was takes her back for a bath and the tub was running red with the blood. Two days later I took her to the vet and have her checked out and get her shots started. The vet said that she had to be at least 4 months old as she had all her teeth in. She was pretty small and badly undernourished and she only weighed 17 lbs.

I took some pictures of her the day we got her and I am posting those and ones I just took the other day. By the way, she is a pit bull. Serendipity, kismet? Maybe help from beyond? Whatever, she is a sweet dog but also a terrier and has a ton of energy. She can be outside and made to run for a couple of hours and then you bring her inside and she still has a ton of energy. It can take awhile but when you finally get her settled down she pretty much just lays around, but it doesn't take much to get her wound up again. I just feel bad because we are going out of town and have to put her up in a kennel for about 10 days.

Sad to say Cody passed on the 4th of July.  We went to Myrtle Beach to pick him up to bury him in the back yard with all of his other siblings here in VA.  He was born on on Christmas Eve of 1999 and died in the afternoon of July 4th 2016.  Interesting it was such special dates.  I kind of knew it was coming that day.  We're not as sad anymore - we know he had a long and healthy life.  Mom is doing better and already thinking of getting another companion.  I still see shadows in the corner and think I see him out of the corner of my eye.  I've even called for him coming into mom's front door a few days after he was gone - twice.  Our cat Theo is even older.  When he goes, I think we are done with having pets, grand-kids are enough.

Sorry to hear.  I have had cats all my life, so I have had to deal with losing pets, too (3 so far, at ages 19, 6, and then 15).  With each, like you, I kept seeing them in the shadows and in the corner of my eye for months.  A few times I could swear I heard him/her.  In some ways it was very disturbing, but in others, reassuring.

Pets ask for so little and give so much in return... We had a wonderful cat who died at the age of 19 who loved to play in the bed while you tried to change the sheets... Fast forward many years and for the strangest reason our 11 year old dog has recently decided she likes to play the exact same game...

Title: Saying goodbye to my best little buddy, Sookie.
Post by: Conrad on June 15, 2017, 02:28:46 PM
A light has gone out in my life and the world is a darker place for it.

We had to have my lil sweetheart, my buddy and perpetual puppy, Sookie, euthanized Sunday night. It was one of the hardest things that we've ever had to do. She was only 8.

She was diagnosed with a autoimmune disorder that attacks the red blood cells and in her case the white blood cells as well. Possibly a rare form called Evans syndrome.

We had just arrived at home after a 5 hour drive after a weekend long camping trip. Sookie was fine then and the entire weekend. The only issue with her was something that my wife noticed when we got to our campsite Thursday night. Sookie had some red blotches on her belly. They didn't seem to bother her and she was acting normal. I googled it and found some pics that looked like what she had. It was either from the sun or grass gnat bites. Ok, nothing serious.

Once we got home things changed in a big hurry. After I let the three dogs outside I noticed a red puddle on the floor. It seemed to be urine with a bit of blood in it. Then wife found another puddle on the rug near the door. It was very dark red blood. I didn't know which dog it came from so I went outside to see who it was. I checked Sookie first and my heart sank. She had blood all over her vagina and the backs of her legs.

This happened around 6:30 Sunday night and the only vet open in this area at that time was the emergency vet about 40 mins away (they're only open after hours and weekends). I called them and told them that we were on the way. Once we got there they took a quick look at Sookie and took her back for bloodwork. I was hoping that it was just a serious bladder infection or something treatable like that. When the vet came back with the test results the news was as bad as it can get. The prognosis grave. Her platelet count was near zero and she was bleeding internally. Her red count was also very low.

The vet injected the overdose of anesthetic into her IV line. Her leg twitched once (that twitch haunts me) and Sookie died on my lap while my wife and I held her. All that life and vitality all that joy and happiness gone in the space of a few heartbeats.

I miss that little dog something fierce.

Oh man Conrad, I am so sorry.
I'm sure you gave Sookie the most amazing life.

-----------------

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

My sincerest condolences Conrad. It is quite clear from your post that 'you are one of us' and do not see "pets" as animals but basically the better part of what humans could be. To all of us, losing a 'short member of the family' is impossible to describe. I have had two dogs in my life and had to put both down; the first when my kids were still fairly young, and it was absolutely an terrible phase of our lives. I could not shake the thought that in the end, the only thing the little fellls and gals count on is for us to basically keep them alive and each one of us will fail at that eventually. Normally I am not morbid that that thought followed me around for weeks... maybe months.

Funny thing I have found about pets is that they do not even have to be 'mine' to be a pet. My brother had a Doberman that was just a wonderful dog and he and I were the best of pals; I cannot imagine we would be any closer had he been my own pet.

So again, my deepest sympathies to you and your family on losing one of your own.

On a slightly different note: we lost our last dog about 4 years ago and between riding and house work, we decided not to get any more pets for a while. But my wife is terrified that I am going to bring something furry home and we both know she will just not have it in her to reject the animal.... and I will not have to do a thing, just ask if she wants me to take it away, at which point it will live here forever. :-)  So far I have not nor do I intend to do so but just maybe one day, that certain mutt will cross my path, need a home and be sleeping in our bed about a week after establishing all the rules that prohibit that very thing.

You are a good man Conrad; schmucks do not agonize over the loss of any animal (and a lot of people) in my experience.

Brian (who thinks most of my very favorite people are dogs....)

A light has gone out in my life and the world is a darker place for it.

Conrad I'm so sorry to read your message.

Losing a pet is an awful experience and one from which we pet lovers struggle to recover

Think of all the happy loving times you shared with your Sookie and the smile she put on your face at those times.

Pets give so much and ask for so little in return

Thanks so much for the kind words guys, I do appreciate it.

Sookie was such a special lil dog. She was so loving and as I said, she was my buddy and was almost always at my side. She was always curious to see that I was doing. If I was working on something she was right there, checking out what I was doing. Most times if I was busy with something and she wanted to play (which was 95% of the time) she'd place her ball right in the middle of whatever I was working on and want me to throw it for her. If I was filling or empting the dishwasher, her ball would be on the dishwasher door and she'd be looking at me waiting for the throw. If I took too long, she'd let me know.

We have two other dogs and one of them, Agnes, is Sookie's sister. Agnes has been besides herself, looking everywhere for Sookie and laying in Sookie's bed. It's heartbreaking.

The house is so quiet now. Sookie was the cheerleader of the three and they fed off of her energy.

It'll take me a long time to get over the loss of this lil dog. When I think of not ever seeing her again, I catch my breath for a moment. It's hard to explain but from the kind words I've read here I know that you guys know what I'm feeling. Thanks for that.

Conrad, that really sucks. They just dont stay around long enough, do they?

In our family, it includes 3 dogs.

The one that picked me is a 3.5lb Maltese.  No reason why she picked me.  I did not want her. Im way more of  a big dog sort -of person...uh, yea..right...anyway, from day one, she just thought I was it.

If Im around, she refuses to go through the dog door.  Why do that when old stupid will get up and open the door, right?  Often times, she refuses to walk to her night bed.  Why walk when old, stupid guy will carry her?   It can be 100 degrees , but if I ask her, "are you cold", she will shiver.

Last week, she had two seizures, and it scared us to death.  We got her to the emergency vet, and he put her on some medicine. Shes doing much better.

Our 18lb Shorkie is hell on wheels. She turned the house into her own, personal Supercross track. Shes small, but can jump and climb , like a panther. The vehicle she most resembles is a helicopter.

Our old Westie is just sort of here.  She likes to think shes in charge, but the Shorkie is way too smart.

In the photo, the shorkie is watching me to see if I have food. The squirt bottle if for the Shorkie.  Some sort for discipline thing.  We dont even bother to put the bottle away. Semi worthless as the dog is fast enough to dodge the water stream.

“Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really.”
-Agnes Sligh Turnbull

As to your dog interacting with you, that sounds exactly right and like the training has taken extremely well. The only fault there might be that the roles were somehow reversed but hey, that is kinda' part of their charm too, isn't it?

My last one, Zack, a Shepherd / Lab mix, guarding the house.....

Brian

Cheers Brian,

he's not had a particularly good start in life (hes between 4 & 5).

Was first brought to Merseyside September last year from from Ireland where he was found as a stray. From what I've been told and the vets records at the time he was in a poor condition

Went out to family late Dec/early Jan however they brought him back in March last year for showing aggressive tendencies particularly towards males. Oh and he had killed a (wild) rabbit which  upset the kids (jeeez he's a dog, it happens!!).

I first saw him online about 2 months ago and instantly fell for his scruffy dog looks). Popped down to see him and all the staff at the rescue centre were telling me he doesn't like men and will either go nuts or not come out from his 'safe' space would you prefer to see another dog

Me being bloody minded declined, found my way over to the kennel he was in , sat down on the floor outside with my back to him (resting against the bars)  and just sat there vaping for about 10 minutes until I felt a cold wet nose in the back of my neck :)

Spent a bit of time through the bars with him  before leaving and repeated this on 2 or 3 subsequent visits

On the next  visit I asked if I could see him outside his kennel, again I was told he doesn't like men and would need to be muzzled etc. Fortunately for me his main carer Kelly had seen me with him  on my previous visits (bit hard to miss wearing motorcycle gear, orange hi viz and carrying an orange helmet!!)  and made a decision to "ignore" the rules and the three of us went for a walk together. Initially with Kelly taking him then she passed him over to me, he was good as gold. Also spent some time off lead with him (Kelly in attendance) in a secure compound.

The following day I went back again and this time Kelly felt she could let me take him on and off lead on my own having been pleased with our interactions the previous day.

Then the nail biting started. I wanted to adopt but as I had holidays booked they wouldn't let me start the adoption process although they did mark me as a "provisional".

Kept popping in every couple of days to see him until I went away then the whole 2 weeks I was in Cyprus it was a daily heck to see if he had been "reserved"

Arrived back in the UK thurs last week and pretty much went straight down to see him again. It was really nice that after a 2 week break he recognised me and gave me a big excited "welcome back wee" :)

Anyways went through the adoption paperwork that day then over the following week had a one to one with a behavioural specialist (going through his "issues" and advising use of muzzle for walks , new meets etc, not to be left with "small furries")  and a home visit (Winston + Kelly) before picking him up this morning with my girlfriend along.

Good as gold in the van coming home, yes I've been out and bought (haven't owned a car for over 15 years) a Winston Wagon (or for those who know him, a Postman Pat van lol) and as he was so relaxed took him out for a little walk across the local fields earlier, again his behaviour was impeccable (no muzzle, my choice) .

And so his 3rd crack at life starts , 2 grumpy greying gits together lol

Well, given all of that I will simply say again- good on you, this time squared!

I am confident that all will be well, given that you have been tenacious in all that is and has been required of you to 'acquire' Winston.

My only caution, and it is surely and absolutely none of my business but I will say it anyway, is that you stand firm between Winston and any trouble he may get into as he has shown that he can be aggressive and perhaps a little bit over- reactive with some people. In other words, I suggest you be ever- vigilant in preventing Winston from ever getting into a situation with other humans where he could cause trouble, and in turn, have something really unfortunate happen to him. We recently had an incident in Los Angeles where police were attacked by a very aggressive pit bull; the pit bull was apparently restrained and the police 'gave ground' to ease the situation but after getting backup (more police of course) and re-addressing the initial situation, the dog again got loose and again attacked one of the L.E.O.'s (Law Enforcement Officer). Several LEO's then fired on the dog, of course, and while they were successful in stopping the dog from attacking by shooting him, a ricochet off the street killed a 17 year old youth, apparently trying to regain control of the dog. So the kid is dead, the dog is wounded but alive (though it is extremely unlikely that condition will continue for long), one LEO was bitten, and one LEO was hit by shrapnel, apparently from another LEO's shots. The point being of course that you, as the dog's owner, are the one tasked with keeping Winston from getting himself into trouble in the first place. But I am confident you will do well given you efforts so far with this dog.

Enjoy Winston and both of you should benefit......

Brian

thanks for the sage words Brian.

I'm going to be as vigilant when out with him as I am riding the bike :)

Actually speaking of bike that was the only "adverse" reaction when we were out. Wasn't too keen on a chap in lycra coming the other way pushing a mountain bike, what was interesting is that he "adverse" reaction wasn't aggression rather he (Winston that is) made a point of putting me between himself & the cyclist.

Otherwise didn't bat an eyelid at anyone else including kids or dogs.

He will be on a lead at all times (got a 10m extension/running/retractable lead) other than when I go to the local Doggy Country Club once a week, they have large secure fields you can hire privately with noone else in them(unless you choose to take anyone that is).

well that was a pretty good first night from Winston.

Moved his bed out to the kitchen, encouraged him out the back (although othing done) and went up to bed.

Initially he followed me up and tried jumping on my bed but soon went back downstairs when told firmly.

I left my door slightly ajar and he spent the next 15 minutes  prowling up and down the stairs every couple of minutes before finally curling up (not on his bed) at the foot (I was watching on camera) . There was then around 10 minutes of throwing one of his balls around before he settled down on his bed.

I was probably watching for another 30-40 mintes before I went to sleep.

I woke up just before 5 (not because of any noise from WInston but because I had too :D ) and he came up to say good morning.

Came back down with him and was pleased to see no little (or in his case not so little) parcels for me although he had had a small wee(it's a stone floor so no panics)  . Opened up the back door for him before going back to bed myself.

He followed me back up and lay at the side of the bed for a few minutes before going back to his own (although he did come back and check on me a couple of times) where he stayed until I got up to make his breakfast.

Really happy with that and that there was no noise from him all night :)

Excellent Mikey great to see that Winston has found a good home   :)

He's settled in really well,. First night was as up there(little bit of faffing but nothing major). Second night he went straight on his bed when I went up , 3rd & 4th nights he's just taken himself off to his bed at around 21:00 ish without any prompting.

Been no messing in the house , prefers a grass surface to poop on and even when I had to go in to the office for the morning on Monday there was no noise from him apart from a bit of a bark at next doors window cleaner (I've got a monitor plus Barbara is keeping an ear out for me).

Other than pulling a  pyrex dish containing chicken in honey & mustard sauce off the kitchen worktop yesterday evening (thats my fault for leaving it there, was leftovers I was going to pop in the fridge when cooled) he's not chewed or damaged anything apart from his toys :)

Been brilliant out on walks and been so good I've been comfortable letting him off lead (am lucky we have some big open fields with good visibility) and he also seems happy socialising at the pub halfway round his evening walk :)  (that might be the porky scratchings)

Know where you're coming from. Been 15 years or so since my last dog and I've been moving around and in rented accommodation.

Pretty much settled here now plus working from home at least 50% of the week so it does make it easier.

That all makes perfect sense.

I can work from home also but my home is more of a..... kit right now..... some assembly required. A pet, even a large dog, would likely get stuck or hurt in the current mess, and likely get loose repeatedly with all the things and people coming and going through the house. Plus, it would be pretty irresponsible of me to get an adult dog of unknown or even a bit touchy temperament, as you mention Winston is or at least has been in the past, and parade a bunch of strangers past it; it really raises the risk that someone might have an incident with the dog and both the person and the dog suffer because of it. So I am minding my manners and busily NOT procuring any pets, which has happened totally by mistake in the past. My last dog came home with me while I was getting a load of firewood, and I only grabbed him to take him to the local pound (public dog holding area, not sure if that word works in the UK or not?) so he literally would not freeze to death. Somehow he never quite got to the pound though.  ;)

Brian

we get that (in context) even though we don't use it (except to buy things ;)

oh and by the way this is a pound symbol, £ , not one of these, # , the latter is a hashtag (or more correctly an octothorpe)

Yeah, the pound sign # usually means weight over here (or is that mass). We do not have ready access to the monetary sign 'pound' ahthough it is in the OS. £  Ha! It IS in there. You are probalby in the  same boat regarding the dollar sign. The symbol that seem to be lost or at leas on the run in the 'cent' symbol, ¢, which do not see much anymore. There is a whole movement on about getting rid of pennies anyway and rounding the smallest transaction to a nickle (5 cents, 20 to a dollar).

Nope the $ sign is easily accessible (Shift + 4) although oddly the € isnt unless you know where to look (ALT-GR + 4)

Hmmm the ¢  symbol

WOuld probably resort to the CHarMap for that if I couldn't copy'n'paste ;)

Winstons hunting heritage kicked in this morning.

Out for our morning walk over at the local park/fields when he suddenly shot off and started going into the long meadow grass/wildflower area which he normally doesn't do.

Thought he might have got wind of a rabbit but as I scanned around I spotted 4 small roe deer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roe_deer) in there.

First time with me that he has completely ignored me when I've called him (he has stopped for squirrels) although fortunately the deer eluded him and disappeared into the woods. Managed to get him back on lead before he could follow them but he was still on edge for the rest of the walk.

During last night's very brief rain shower, two of our four dogs decided to camp out under my computer desk. Belle, our golden retriever, is afraid of lightning, thunder, rain, loud sounds, cameras, gunshots, fireworks, anything but food. Fred, our foster English pointer mix, is the alpha wanna-be (but not) and is also a bit nervous when it rains. Hysterical to see them buddied-up like this.

I recognize the look on their faces. Agnes (doxie/yorkie mix, aka Dorkie) feels the same way about thunder/fireworks. She'll try to hide and then just sit there trembling.

Well it is pretty clear from that photo that you need either 1) bigger dogs or 2) a smaller desk. :-)  Maybe the best solution would be a couple more dogs. Must keep you feet warm under there.

My dogs were mostly not concerned in the least with thunder / fireworks although my last dog, Zack, did get somewhat, oh, 'interested' in fireworks when he got pretty old. Fortunately, deafness set in and so the problem sort of slid away. I miss the mutt.

Have you tried a thunder blanket for their anxiety? Called by different names....thunder shirt, calming coat. One of our dogs gets a bit skittish at times and this seems to help some.
