Title: Corpssgt took a spill today
Post by: Jeremy Mitchell on June 12, 2011, 06:53:10 PM
A buddy and I met up with Trey (Corpssgt) and his buddy Craig to ride in Arkansas today.  We left from Yellville and headed towards Push Mountain and everything went great until Trey was coming around a left hand 35 mph curve towards the bottom of Push Mountain and took a ride into the ditch.  From where I was about 20 meters behind him he went wide and hit some loose gravel on the right shoulder and low sided into the ditch.  Then the bike popped up when it hit the concrete and high sided into the hill which sent Trey over the bars and the bike almost flipped over on top of him.  He busted up his knee and shoulder pretty good, but is doing well, all things considered.  He is currently on his way home with his wife back to KC.  I am pretty sure he will have a couple days off to mend, so I will let him explain what exactly happened.  I am just glad that he is in better shape than his bike.  Get well soon Trey!

Here are a couple pics

Man that hurts...to see a nice bike in that shape. I'm glad to hear his injuries are no worse than described. C14- Pilot and myself ended up in north Arkansas with some guys from Texas, just did'nt make it over to Push Mt.

I hope Corpssgt heals up quickly and gets back on the road soon, really sorry that happened.

He had his bags on, one was trashed and the other was thrown from the bike.  Before I took any of the pics I had collected everything up to send it with Trey in the ambulance.

He had me scared for a couple minutes before he regained consciousness.  Hopefully he will post up when he feels up to it to give his perspective of this nasty event.

Oh no!!!!

Heal quickly Trey.

That's one of the saddest bike related sights I have ever seen. Poor Connie, getting towed out of the ditch in such a shape.    :'(

hi all.  thanks for the concern.  im hunting and pecking to type so grammer an caps aren't something im worried about.  i should heal up fine.  not too sure about the hospital there.  so far my injuries are torn rotator cuff, and a golf ball size hole in my knee. the doc cut a lot of hamburger out of there.  really not sure what happened i was straight up and went to hit the brakes and the front tire seemed to be washing out as if it had locked up.  i wasnt on the brakes too hard at that point.  i tried to modulate the front and must have locked the rear.  it didnt seem that i could make the corner at that point so i picked a spot to head off road.  i dont really recall what happened when i hit the ditch but i remember my face heading at the embankment.  couldnt breath and then the lights went out.  woke up to jeremy calling out my name and i was trying to figure out why i was sleeping.  Felt better yesterday than i do today.  i'm sure tomorrow will be worse. i feel really lucky how well i came out because as we all know this could have been worse.  wanted to let everyone know how great of a guy jeremy is.  he made me a sling for my shoulder that got plenty of compliments from the medical staff.

i have some thinking to do about whether to get back in the saddle or not.  the connie will still be a front runner in the list if i do.  i might be the first one to own 3 c14's.

Typical Marine, always having a Soldier bail em out ;)  Heal up, dont think about riding yet, you'll know when the time is right.  Thank God you didnt have the fast Silver one, just imagine what woulda happened 8)  When you get your new C14, I'd recomend a slow red one, or slower yet, the black one :-*

Get well soon,

Chet

Nooooooooooooooooo! It pains me to see a FAST BLUE Concours in that shape. Hell, it looks like my bike! Now I feel snakebit!

Heal up fast . . . and of course you will need to get a new BLUE Connie! I've done the rotator cuff thing. Sounds like the knee injury is going to be the more painful of the two.

SNIP Typical Marine, always having a Soldier bail em out ;)  Chet

I'm just glad nobody was watching me when I was making sure Trey's back wasn't broken.  That would have looked weird coming up on the scene and seeing me check for a priapism.  But I knew that it was a possibility the way he landed.  I felt like I was back in the sandbox minus a firefight.  I knowTrey would have done the same for me too.  ;)

I know it's a lil early yet but when you get a chance, and feel up to it, can you tell us what gear you were wearing and how it performed in protecting you?

It could have been a lot worse. Glad to hear you're doing better. Knee injuries are nasty (over 3 years, incl.hardware removal for me...), start on physio as soon as you can and stick with it. Without it, your range of motion will never be the same...

Typical Marine, always having a Soldier bail em out ;)
Get well soon,

Yeah! One of my riding buddies from Olean,NY is a Marine.....I have to say, They're an outstanding bunch!

Sorry to hear about the incident, but quitting is never the way to go.  Aches and pains are just reminders of a life well lived.  Your next Connie needs a turbo... and crash bars.

Carry on.

Et al:  Marines may be outstanding, but we are most definitely gluttons for abuse.

Trey, your lucky and as said, it could have been worse. Locking the rear brake got me a titanium elbow a few years back. Get ABS on the next bike!  ;D

All kidding aside, it could have been much worse and you are lucky. Just heal up and make that your first priority. You health and family come first. Then find a way to talk your wife into a replacement bike!  8)

I tore a large hamburger's worth of meat out of my left leg just above the knee last year. My doc was REAL concerned about that one. That one injury cost my insurance over 15k to fix, and it wasn't a lot bigger than a golf ball. Four months of healing enough to get a skin graft, and still healing from there....

Holes where they shouldn't be are kinda horrible.

You'll heal up good...   :P

ok sorry for not keeping up with questions.  gear was an oneill tirade- lost the visor very little damage to it.  scorpian exo mesh jacket- i think it held up pretty well its ripped at a few seams but i dont have much rash at all.  pants are feildshier mesh that i left home and may have saved my knee.  this was the only time i have ridden without full gear for 5 years.  what a dumbass move on my part.

dr. im not real sure yet.  buddies sister is a pt and gave me some ideas on how to find the right one.  my family doc doesnt want to see me until monday.  she said my patella tendon may be torn and if so i want to be on the table by wed. before the scar tissue gets to work.

one other piece of advice to everyone i think fred h. wrote a article called the pace.  its a great read and good advice so try to find it.

thanks again for all the support.

Thanks Pokey.  Finally starting to be in a little less all over pain.  Now its just hanging out in the actually hurt parts.  Still cant move the right arm much at all.  Heading back to the doctor today.  It been really nice weather out all week for riding so its really a brain screw trying to figure out what my next step is going to be.  I've already decided I won't buy another bike until next year.  Maybe that green color will make it here next year.

Hey Corp,
I have been watching this threads for a while, and thought I'd drop you a note.
Glad your ok, sorry about the bike, of course.
I will give you some advice about the knee injury. Be very careful with the patela tendon tear, it is not just painful it can allow the knee cap to drift and then damage blood vessels.
Surgey is easy and is usually scoped, and usually necessary. I have done some kind of knee surgery 6 times, from all my yrs on a football field. I hope you have a orthopedic doctor that has some good advice, good luck, and keep the break dancing to a minimum and heal fast.
Ride safe all.
Greg

going to ortho tomorrow for the shoulder.  mri showed 3 partial tears and one full tear with a broken humerous (it aint funny though.) really unhappy with how little the doctor ive seen since i was 12 seems to have no urgency on any of these injuries.  its been two weeks.  i could be healing from surgeries already.  thanks again for all the support you all are a good group.

Patience will reward you!  They need time for the swelling to go down, no sense in getting a procedure done that wasnt required.  Heal smart, dont overdo anything, it will only delay the healing process.  Patience, patience, and more patience.  Take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning ;)

Like SOP said, be patient and don't over do it. Next time I ride Push Mountain I will have your accident on my mind, maybe that will slow me down a little, the ditches through there do look rough. Get well soon but don't re-injure yourself doing something you shouldn't.

I think you should consider a new doctor. They're like mechanics: a few damn good ones and the rest are mediocre at best. My effed-up hearing is courtesy of the latter.

But seriously, YOU need to take charge of your care and recovery. Get thee to a specialist.

Go over to thumpertalk.com  One of the best ortho docs in the world (Sanderson) has his own forum there and he passes out good advice and debunks what a lot of other docs say and do. His clinic in Houston gets a LOT of riders and he's on my short list (real short; his is the only name) if I get fracked up racing. That he's not local is not a problem, nor is he insanely expensive and only deals with rock stars. He's a rider. One of us. He specializes in knee injuries and right now that sounds like something you need.

Going under the knife next thursday to repair the shoulder.  He is hoping to be able to scope it but said no big deal if not.  He did not seem worried about the knee.  All the tendons seem to be where they need to be.  He said swelling is whats stopping the movement in the knee.  All in all im just still very happy that I'm okay and I think I'll be able to fully recover from these injuries within reason anyway.

One last lesson learned from me because I replay this in my head a lot every day.  When the sh1t hits the fan and things are going crazy still try to make the turn.  I remember giving up on making the turn early on in the process of crashing.  Then Jeremy's voice keeps ringing out with one of the first things he said to me "all you had to do was turn man".  I'll check in again after some healing happens.

All I can tell you is what I saw from behind and you were definitely not exceeding the C14's limitations or your own from when I followed you the last time we rode Push Mountain.  Looking at the road and where you started to head for the shoulder/ditch, there didn't appear to be anything that would have caused you to lose traction.  But I didn't take the same line as you and I'm not a traffic investigation expert either, so there might have been some sand or gravel dust that caused your front end to wash out.  I am just glad that you are still around to make the decision on if and when you ride again.  Take care brother.

Corpssgt, I just returned from Push Mt.. I takes me 2 days to get there so I ride it several times. Each time feeling braver or maybe not as timid.  I kept your experance in mind as the day went on. Seeing the cuts in the payment was an other reminder of how close to going down is and how far from home it is. I don't know you but your honesty stuck with me and I thank you, I hope all the best for you...blanton

Thanks for the.concern pappy. I had a full rotator repair done july 7th. Just started physical therapy last week.  Needless to say after not moving my arm sine June 12th its really sore. Knee is still not trustworthy but I can usually walk without much of a limp.  It's doing well enough to coach my 6 year olds flag football team but its taken awhile to learn to throw lefthanded. All estimates are i might be fully recovered around christmas. I should have about 85% of its original abilities. Still not sure if ill ever become as avid of a rider as I was but I can tell you I've never missed doing anything more. Everyone stay safe out there and remember to avoid those mental breaks.

I'm happy to hear things are improving, just remember to take it slow, 'less of course ya like pain!  You could always buy one of them slow bikes, ya know, a V twin with the initials HD ;)
I thought the USMC was the mens department of the Navy?  JK, I hope the decisions YOU make work for you and you return to what is normal for you and your family.  And if you do decide to ride again, let the Army lead the way ;D

Pappy your lucky that I had an army person there to look out for.me when that crash happened or I would.dive into my deep resources of fun military insults. It is kinda funny that you asked a marine to let the army lead the way. Must be rough always.being second.lol just one I'm done I promise. Jimmy I got a new number lost all my numbers in the crash. 703-9969 will get me now. I was thinking of maybe going with something like a klr 650 for a little while. They are cheap and the dual purpose seems like a neat idea. I'll still keep in touch here and hopefully one of these days ill grow a pair big.enough to jump back on a concours.

Side note Helga at the house of pain really stepped up the work today. Holy crap I almost peed on her table. Stay safe everyone.

Let em go ;D  I'd like to hear something original ;)  I'll start (laughter's the best medicine) My Ass Rides In Navy Equipment (MARINE)  Why does the Navy take Marines aboard ship during deployment?  Sheep would be too obvious 8)
I worked with Uncle Sams Misguided Childern in APG, even trained several hundred 2111s, so I'd bet one of em fixed your weapons.  I'd never trade the years for anything, If I had to choose which set of instructors to work with it was always the Corps.

Semper Fi and a big HUA!

Fine choice on the KLR.  Toss the stock rubber and slip on a set of IRC GP-110's.  You won't regret it.

Good to hear you are moving along.

I'm sure Pappy meant to give you an "Oorah."

Would that have been a happy ending a Helga's?

BTW, on the KLR?  Awesome choice and the mods are even cheaper :D  Coupla washers and a drill bit wake her up for about.22 cents.  Shes a tractor on the dirt and just plain fun to ride.  If you get one let me know, I'll help out the best I can.
