Title: Howdy from Texas
Post by: tradrockrat on April 02, 2015, 11:49:39 AM
Hello all.  Yesterday I bought myself a 1987 Concours with 21K on the odometer and a reasonable amount of work to be done to it.  I look forward to sharing what little I have to offer on motorcycles in general and picking your brains about the ZG's as I go through this bike and get it road worthy.

The bike is in great shape for a $500 purchase and could pass safety inspection here in Texas with an afternoons worth of work.  I, however, have been riding since I was 16 and am still alive because I don't ride motorcycles that I'm not familiar with, so this will be getting a good going over, some new rubber, and some new fluids all before I get it titled , inspected and insured for the road.

Little about me?  I've owned 2 Kawi's, 2 Hondas, 2 Harleys, and three Yamaha's in my life.  I have about half a million miles under my belt on the road (not sure of the exact number - several bikes of mine do not / did not have speedos for a time...), and am partial to bikes made in the 70's and 80's (the 1996 Sportster was a wonderful exception).  Currently I own two 78 SR500's - one near stock and one a full on hardtailed chopper I made from a damaged XT frame.  Any forum I join, I use the same name: tradrockrat.  I'm sure there's a few embarrassing posts out there in cyberspace from me on other places.

I am SUPER excited to finally have a Concours in my possession!  Today I plan on taking off the plastics to figure out how bad they are (this bike was dropped on it's right side, but a hard look at the frame, forks and plastics showed it to be a minor accident) and looking at the valves and cam chain tensioner, and replacing all fluids.

I'm sure the questions will start withing the next few days...

Thanks for having me!

Tradrockrat, if your not going to the Moto GP, come visit or ride with us.
The Club (COG) will be in Hunt Texas (near Kerrville) next weekend at the River Inn (for the Wildflower Ride.)
Should be about 30 there...
I can send you the info if you want?

Ride safe, Ted

Sorry for the delay in replying - been asking questions and neglecting answers!

As for the local guys - heck yeah I want to get together and ride!  I work Saturdays, but I plan on hitting the Handbuilt motorcycle show Saturday evening in Austin, then watching the MotoGP races Sunday.  However, Sunday may be tricky - we'll see.  Worst case scenario, I wind up at the Lost Well in East Austin - they show every MotoGP race on the TV's and big screen during the season.  Great times.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Yup - best laid plans meets spring in Texas...  I won't know if I'm going to make the actual races until Thursday, but I will post here when I know.
