Damn old Hondas
« on: June 04, 2011, 11:36:59 AM »
Was trying to keep in the reasonably good graces of SWMBO then up pops an email....Got your name....would you be interested in....well maybe I'll just look at it.....

So the story is I picked up a 1971 CB175 Basket case 6 months ago, lots of good  but the cam etc needs changing and the DPO was a little experimental in his taking things apart but for the money it was OK. Thought that since there have been lots of parts around for the last three CL/CB350 projects that the 175 would not be a problem.....wrong or at least wrong at the price I'm willing to pay.

So then this email.....1972 CB175, crap, tank is different than the 71 but OK lets look.....fellow did some fixing on it 5 years ago. Smooth running, good tires, chain, sprockets.....then wham....the holy grail....NOS header pipes and mufflers and a NOS front fender.....damn these old Hondas.

Curent registration, work properly done, did I mention those NOS parts.....oops forgot, NOS speedo and tach....who is this SWMBO and why do I care?

So a little sweet bike is now home and I'll be part swapping and spiffing her up......and hey SWMBO thinks she is cute and may be a canidate for learning how to ride .....this is cruelty ......SWMBO's are evil.

Do the pistons go up and down together?

Does it have a centrifugal oil 'filter'.

Does it have valve access caps around 2" wide which are tightened and removed via a 1/2" bolt head with rounded points?

Does it have 2 sets of ignition points hanging on the end of the cam?

Centrifugal spark advancer?

Must be a Honda.

Just been playing around with the 175 in the front driveway with the garage door up.

Attracting old guys like flies and causing the Loyal Order of SWMBO Sisterhood to go into overdrive in reasons ownership is never going to happen and I learned long ago not to volunteer mechanical services on old bikes sold to neighbours or friends.

George I see you have a CB160, still looking to replace the CL160 I let get away but man I need to get a second job to afford one these days.

Have a line on a local GB500 that may cause a serious dose of Yes Dear....and a selling of all other things Motorcycle....but hey this is enough fun for now.....

Looking forward to the pix. My first bike way back in the day was a CB350. Guess that makes me one of those old guys! Have fun.

I rode a CL175 in High School.  It was the high pipe version of the one that started this thread.  It was the two tone red and white tank model with the typical "only three dents" gas tank.
I made it "road worthy" by putting a bigger front sprocket on it, changed the oil and the plugs, and regapped the points.  I even pulled the cover and wiped the grit from the centrifical oil filter.  I proceeded to ride it on my first adventure.  I rode from Chicago to Denver on the little bike.  It took 3 days, as 300 + miles a day was pretty tough on the little bike, as well as the foolish kid who rode it. I called home (collect) every morning, mid day and evening as I had agreed.  Spent a day sight seeing, having never seen a mountain before.  A Honda dealer near Boulder loaned me an oil pan and let me change the oil in the gravel lot before I rode home.  (I had it in my mind that 1000 miles was a long way, I am sure they laughed at me for being worried about oil)  The bike got me there and back fine.  That little 17 horse engine spun 6000-7000 rpm's the whole time I was on I-80, pretty impressive that it stayed together, but I was too young to know it could have been a problem.   The rear tire was showing cords about the time I got back.  I guess those trail bike tires are not up to the big trip of a 16 year old.  Traded up for a CL350 with ape hanger handlebars that next fall.  I just knew that with a "Big Bike" I could tour the world!
Yep, still riding the old one
