1986 Honda Sabre 1100 - lost keys
« on: April 19, 2012, 10:08:42 AM »
My nephew lost the key to his motorcycle. He bought it used and got only one key. What are the option to get a new key made? Is there some sort of number somewhere to get a key made?

It came with a little metal tab that had key numbers for it... since he wasn't the original owner, I'm sure it's gone... I wrote mine in the Owner's Manual... maybe?

you can ask here.  http://v4hondabbs.com/index.php

If you can't get a key made, you can probably buy a new switch with a key..
.... because I can!

IMHO, people who buy a bike with only one key and do not immediately get a spare key don't think far enough ahead to belong on a motorcycle.  Part of surviving on a bike is considering possibilities and options.  "It can't happen to me" is a recipe for disaster. Hopefully the kid will take the lesson to heart. [/grumpyoldmanmode]

Having said that, all the old Honda's (and other brands) that I have seen have the key number on both the helmet lock and the ignition lock.  If you remove the lock(s) and take it/them to a locksmith, they s/b able to cut you a key.  You might want to call first to see if they need any proof of ownership or ID.  It may be possible to read the number without removing the locks, but it may be difficult.

There will be a number on one of the locks, either the seat, steering lock stem, helmet lock and ignition, if you cant find one, if you pull the ignition out and send it to me, I can get you 2 keys cut for $10.

Just to update, I was able to dig the ignition switch out fairly easy by taking the headlight and the right side turn signal bracket. There was numbers printed on there and was able to get them to a Locksmith to get key made. I could have possibly read the numbers without having to take the switch out if I knew the exact location - they were very small though. Nutshell, we got two keys made and back to riding.

Would this work for a couple of Kawasaki Lion Crest keys too?

Thanks Tim

Just want to point out though that in my case, the helmet or seat lock did not work. According to the locksmith, the helment lock has lesser number of key way (or something like that she said) and will not work for ignition.

Did your locksmith cut the keys from the code, or by "picking" the lock?  The code should be the same on the ignition, helmet & seat locks, and keys cut from code should fit all the locks.  OTOH, the "lock picking" method will need the ignition as noted.

Code from the ignition switch. There were no codes in the helmet lock or seat lock. Yes, 'picking' method will not work if done on helmet or seat lock.

However, if the ignition was replaced by a new OE ignition at some point they might not match...
