rear tire split sidewall
« on: May 26, 2014, 05:25:46 PM »
hey guys

before taking the bike for a ride yesterday, I noticed this

This is a Avon Storm Ultra tire, 3 years old and with 10000 mi on it. It s due but did not expect this

I keep tire pressure at 42-44, do not overload the bike and ride 2 up 50% of the time

Any idea

Did you ride it when it was cold out?
Some of the new high performance rubber used in tires will crack if used in cold temps.

:yikes: Replace but keep that tire. Contact Avon and ask if they want the tire back to check what happened. Maybe they'll give you some credit.

Sure hope not. I've ridden in the teens many times.

Wow, how did that quarter get stuck in it?  I never thought that money was so dangerous to a tire.  :yikes:   Thank goodness it wasn't a larger denomination.  And yes, I'm just getting started.

Terrorist committing a run-by tire slitting? Perhaps as punishment for averaging only 3,333 miles per year  :stirpot:

I've never had a MC tire dry rot like that.   What's the date code on it?

Please tell us the date code  located on the tire. It is a 4 digit code.

Not enough info?
Sorry,
I must have posted  and not seen that info.  The tire is over 4 years old. Thats not old enough to dry rot. I have replaced tires in good shape because they were  over 4 years old before just because I do not trust them. Cold weather is the only thing I can think of that would do that. I did have an Avon separate with less than 500 miles on it. Avon replaced it at no charge.
Now I run PR3 only.

I run nothing but Avons.....the Storm 2 Ultras, and the regular Storms before them. Have a set of the new Storm 3D-XM's on now but haven't ridden on them much.

10k miles is wow for me...I NEVER get that out of them...if I even get 5k miles out of a rear I'm excited.

But to answer the original question...I've never seen 'em split like that. I had a rear tire fail very quickly on me one time...turns out the pressure was a little low, but I did chat with an Avon engineer at the time, and he said that the Storms were never really meant for a big heavy (and powerful) bike like the C14. I can burn through a rear tire in 3500 miles if I'm having lots of fun;).

I used to run Avon Azaros on my sportbikes back in the 90s, they were great handling tires and the handling didn't change when they wore, not even if they squared off. They did have a problem back then with some of the Azaros with the tread spitting in a similar fashion as your sidewall did. The sidewall on the Azaros didn't split, but the tread did on a limited number of their tires.

Any manufacturer can have issues, yours definitely needs to be taken car of by Avon. I'm glad you caught it before it caused an accident.
