petcock question
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:45:32 pm »
I have an odd question but here it goes: I was removing the fuel line from the petcock today and the piece that the main fuel line connects to on the petcock came off instead of the line coming off alone. Is this piece just pressed into the petcock or is it somehow attached permanently? I can't see where a solder or weld would have broken as the edges are not sharp. Have I messed up bad or can I just press it back in and reattach the fuel line? Thx

Yeah that will happen once in a while; most of the time they can be pressed back in without an issue. I would go get a small tube of Hardening Permatex; I think that it is called # 1... After that it will never come loose again.

Thank you very much for that knowledge. I thought I had messed up the petcock after I forgot to remove my side panels and the tank scratching the left sidecover when I set it on my frame to disconnect the fuel line. Scratched the top edge pretty good and then this happened. Bottom line to newbies- remove your sidepanels before you remove your tank. I knew this but was in too big of a hurry to remember. I found a small matching sonic blue paint marker online from color-rite that I could use in a couple other places so not such a big deal but still sucked.
So.....this permatex, do I put it along the sides of the little piece that came un-attached before pressing it back in, or somewhere else? thanks!

The fit of the tube into the petcock body should be a fairly snug press fit and the Permatex for the most part is going to be scraped right off but it will leave a minute coating along the inserted depth; I would also put a very thin bead right on the thin edge of the tube where the tube bottoms out in the body.

I think that everyone at some point in ownership of the Concours will try pulling the tank without pulling the side covers trying to save a step or two and end up finding out that there is no shortcut to Grandmas house.

Also never just pull a hose straight off the barb; always use a slight twisting motion to your pulling motion.

BTW.... Your very welcome.
