I spend more time on Facebook than forums. But I play those stupid games too.

I think I have 3 or 4 facebook accounts that I don't know how to get back into.  Signed up to see some manufacturer's information,  locked down the account and then never went back until the next time I wanted to see some manufacturer's information.  Then it was easier to create a new account than to try to figure out what the old account was.

I have looked at my wife's facebook from time to time and it does look like a good way to keep up with what is going on with family, but I just let her fill me in on people I am interested in.  LOL!

I find it pretty useful to stay in touch with extended family and old friends.

If I wanted to keep in touch with those people, I would.  I've known how to use a phone and pen and paper for many years now.

I don't have an FB account, never had a MySpace, and I think I have a Google+ just because they give it to you with a Gmail account.  my kids bug me about it sometimes, saying it would be easier to get hold of me.  If it's important, you'll find a way.  Otherwise, I don't need to know what you had for dinner, are watching on TV, or who you're dating.  You're adults, go live your lives, and let me know when you want some advice that you are going to follow anyway.

My son uses Fakebook to post pics of what his boys are up to. I told him that I wouldn't join but to instead e-mail those pics to me. Instead he created a Fakebook profile for me just so that we can see these pics and videos.

It works for that.

I've had a Facebook account since it started...or very early after. How long has it been?..7-8 years now?...

In any case, it's like television...I could very easily live without it. You see, the problem...around here at least, is that Facebook killed the few local motorcycle forums we had....I mean, it ended them. So, I find it handy for keeping in contact with my motorcycle friends....other than that, it's all just mindless drivel...lol. Every bit of it.

On a side note...but related, I just read something the other day about how a restaurant owner in NYC did his own study on the use of smart phones, etc and how it's hurting his business. Apparently, people are taking 6 minutes longer (on average) to eat and finish their meals in restaurants...playing with their phones and not reading the menu...playing with their phones and not eating....taking pictures of their food, and finally, playing with their phones while they send their food back to be reheated because they were too distracted to eat it while it was hot...lol.

So, add 6 minutes to every customer's visit, and at the end of the day, it's all taking valuable time from other potential customers. I hadn't thought of it until I read it, but it's a bit disturbing imho.

PS: BDF...you're thoughts on Facebook are right on target;).

My wife uses Photobucket to share photos but I can see where Facebook would be better because there could be text around the photos.

And now that I am a member and apparently made three 'friends', I am getting 'friend' requests from people I do not even know now. What the.....?

Not sure yet but I think this is going to be a case of Veni, vidi, domus. You know, I came, I saw, I went home.   ;D

Me neither. But now that I'm working 1000 miles away, I love seeing a short video of my granddaughter playing trumpet solo in the HS band concert that I missed. Or pics of my nephew's latest work site where his small company did some fantastic stamped concrete work in Montana. I also love reconnecting with my best friend from NJ after 40 years. My parents moved across the country when I was 14. Turns out my friend had an event in Colorado and stayed with me. We got along just like we did as kids and keep in touch now. Without FB, never would have happened.

So, Brian, what is your screen name?  I found some interesting BDFs, but somehow I don't think BDF Carol is in your DNA!

I'm right back to - if it's important, they'll get hold of me.  I do have email, so if they have pics, video, audio, they can send them along as easily as post them for thew whole world.  maybe I'm being a little selfish, but think the minor effort involved in sending something as "personal" as an email to the grandparents might be nicer that posting it for th world to see and seemingly saying "Here it is, come and get it if you want it".

But that's my curmudgeonly take on it.

Wow, there are a lot of grouches here! If you don't want to do Facebook, then don't. It is very simple.

It's just like television, if you don't want to watch it don't turn it on. Some of the posters are like channels on the television. You can ignore them if you don't want to watch them or read them. Just like on this forum, some people post a lot and I find that I ignore those posts.

We live in a rapidly changing world, and it is difficult to keep up with many of these changes. That doesn't mean that someone is holding a gun to your head to be on Facebook. If you don't want to do Facebook then that's fine, but there's no need to put down people that do you want to do it.

Yeah but you gotta' remember, as a group we are old and that is all we have left- bitching about everything. :-)  The next phase, after the 'old and hating "now" ' is spouting about how great everything used to be....  Annoying to say the least but whatcha' gonna' do?  And remember, some of us have been listening to this constant whine about change for decades- I had to listen to it about fuel injection, electronic ignition, etc., etc. ad nauseum.

But hey, I don't hate Facebook or much else, just didn't find it very useful for me. And I freely admit I am probably not using it correctly or anywhere near its potential either. Hence the title of this whole thread: Facebook- I don't get it. Not Facebook- I hate it. :-)

And watch out about picking on the grouchy people- they will hit you with their cane or throw their dentures at you.... provided they can see you through the cataracts of course.  :rotflmao:

To pull this off topic post off off topic:  Some restaurants you go to for a meal and move on.  Some restaurants you go to as a social event with your family and/or friends.  There is nothing worse than a server bringing out the meal when you haven't even finished the salad yet, or conversely, one who is nowhere to be found when you want the check.

There is a difference between grabbing a bite and a casual dining experience and sometimes we have to choose the restaurant accordingly.   ;D

Warning:  Curmudgeon alert:

A side note:

Does the word 'amazing' seem over used to anyone else?

As in:  "I brushed my teeth this morning with a new brand of toothpaste and I was like, OMG, this is so amazing."

How can it be amazing if its normal?

Amazing insight.
