Like, totally amazed myself that 'amazing' is overused..go figure.  :rotflmao:   I do like the word 'brilliant', though.

Amazingly, I do not know? I don't even know if I have a 'screen name' or not. ?? I just used my regular name to sign up, and lied about everything else.  ;)

That's OK though 'cause I could not find my wife on FB either. And I think she just uses her regular name also, not sure about the lying about everything else though. But I will say that after I did find her and her profile, I expect a 32 year old blonde woman that is 5'8" tall to walk through the door tonight....

So, Brian, what is your screen name?  I found some interesting BDFs, but somehow I don't think BDF Carol is in your DNA!

I have a very small number of friends on Facebook, and at times the volume of posts make it seen like that's many...   I usually ignore friend requests from anyone that I haven't specifically ask for an invitation...   If they seem perturbed by this, I direct them here :

Posted in the "About Me" page in my Facebook profile...

Don't take this personally... It is in fact, rather impersonal, but then that's the point, isn't it. Call me old-fashioned, but I differentiate between friends and acquaintances. I need to have met and communicated with you, even if only by phone or e-mail, before I consider you an acquaintance. To be honest, if we spend no time together offline, chances are that we don't really need to spend time "together" online, so to speak... And if we've only connected once or twice, and again, don't take this personally, there's very little chance that you've "graduated" from acquaintance to friend. Why so persnickety? I am as tired of hearing about every boring, tedious development in anyone's banal, uneventful life as they would be about hearing about every boring, tedious development my own banal, uneventful life. Beyond the privacy implications, accepting every random friend request would soon have my News Feed overrun with irrelevant trivia. I suppose I could accept requests from people I don't know well but then keep them from seeing my updates while I hide their updates from my News Feed, but what would be the point of that?

None have ever come back asking for clarification.  I can only assume that's a good thing...    ;D

I'm right back to - if it's important, they'll get hold of me.  I do have email, so if they have pics, video, audio, they can send them along as easily as post them for thew whole world.  maybe I'm being a little selfish, but think the minor effort involved in sending something as "personal" as an email to the grandparents might be nicer that posting it for th world to see and seemingly saying "Here it is, come and get it if you want it".

But that's my curmudgeonly take on it.

No Facebook account here either, but the wife is looking at it often enough to make up for it, I guess.
Doubt if I ever will start an account. Just don't care enough what others are doing.

What your insight was is the issue I have. My daughter in law posts all the grand daughter pictures and stuff on Facebook and can't take the time to send a personal message by email or even text. Selfish, no I don't think so really. I refuse to encourage any posting on social media because I think it will come back to haunt you sometime or another and telling the world where you are, what you are doing, etc is just going to make opportunistic goons likely to rob your property, possessions or threaten and assault (or worse) yourself, wife or children. Nothing is private or as secure as they assume. Once it's on the internet, it never goes away.
Our family was victimized (way over used term) by armed robbery and assault many years ago before any social media forms and it seems like it would be so much easier now for criminals with such a tool. Makes me very uneasy.
This street bike thing is all new to me.
Snowmobiles-I have a bunch of those.

Amazingly and actually (as opposed to boring and false) I am unable to locate either you or the rodent on FB.  A bit more of a hint would be helpful for those of us in the 21st Century!!

Yeah, probably my privacy settings. I originally set them so tight (Easy Boys!) that I could not find anyone and no one could find me either. After making some adjustments, I can now see some groups but lots of posts (is that was writing to a Facebook 'place' is- a post?) are blocked for me. Not really worth bothering with though as I will probably be one of those people who opened an account in 2014 and did not check it again before moving on (and by that I mean THE BIG moving on, not just changing addresses  ;D ).

Kirby is ascairt to even try Facebook; if he finds just his first cousins, there would be about a gazillion other little furry critters telling each other about their respective nuts.

You see, the problem...around here at least, is that Facebook killed the few local motorcycle forums we had....I mean, it ended them.
In my experience, Facebook is a horrible replacement format for a motorcycle forum.  Especially for planning any events.  I haven't found an easy, acceptable way to scroll through all the other noise just to find the post and keep current.  (Maybe there is one, but I don't use FB enough - I find the entire design to be clunky and non-intuitive.)

And now that I am a member and apparently made three 'friends', I am getting 'friend' requests from people I do not even know now. What the.....?
That's the blatant, rampant, narcissism that Facebook appeals to.  I get friend requests from friends of friends and friends of family all the time.  (And I don't even have all that many people as friends anyway.  On FB or real life.  :o )

That said, it is a convenient way to share family photos and videos.  But I don't use it for much anyway.  I will tend to check in from my phone when I'm out on a motorcycle trip or a vacation, mostly to let my kids know where I am and that I'm OK.  Just a quick check-in from a lunch stop or a sightseeing stop.  My way of saying, "Hey guys, Dad's still safe and sound."

Jon, create a page specific to the group, keep "Friends" that are members of that group.  Doesnt need to be MC specific, but that is usually how they form.  Like here, unsolicited content is easily removed and managed.  These pages are generally local, but can grow to national quickly.  It really is much the same as this forum, but with a much larger potential for an audience due to it's popularity.

To those decrying FB?  Almost sounds like a Harley rider whining about all them "Jap" bikes!  I bet some may still use a switchboard for calls and wait patiently for the Pony Express Rider to pick up a parcel or drop off a tin type to see little Johhny (who was born last year in a neighboring state).  Turn in yer fob and dust of the the v twin, go for a ride and see which bike you really want to ride  :)

Older members may remember my demise back before the great crash, I hated FB, used my name and the critters came out of the wood works.  Pain to really delete an account.  Along came the time to rejoin (with a pseudonym) as a lot of my MC clients use it heavily and to help grow a small business with almost no media budget it works...  I keep my stuff separate, but do manage the schools page and a sub page s well.

We have the Arena, folks manage just fine in avoiding what they don't want to see, no real difference with FB...  And o so easy to share pics and videos.

I don't get it either. But I'm 60 and I don't have to get it. It's not part of my lifestyle. When I retire, I am going to enjoy not carrying my cell phone everywhere I go. Maybe I will anyway - it's entrenched. Tried FB and never had anything to say and got really tired of the drivel coming in all the time. Still have it, but don't look at it much. Under my dogs name, not mine.

Heck, I forget my cell phone as often as I remember to carry it.  The kids have learned to call mom as the chances of her having he phone are far greater.

My son says that he has his phone and FB accounts linked so that when he takes a pic with his phone it's automatically sent to his FB account.

My wife uses Photobucket to share photos but I can see where Facebook would be better because there could be text around the photos.

And now that I am a member and apparently made three 'friends', I am getting 'friend' requests from people I do not even know now. What the.....?

Not sure yet but I think this is going to be a case of Veni, vidi, domus. You know, I came, I saw, I went home.   ;D

Brian

My son uses Fakebook to post pics of what his boys are up to. I told him that I wouldn't join but to instead e-mail those pics to me. Instead he created a Fakebook profile for me just so that we can see these pics and videos.

It works for that.

Yet SO many restaurants are offering free Wi-Fi to lure costumers in...

To pull this off topic post off off topic:  Some restaurants you go to for a meal and move on.  Some restaurants you go to as a social event with your family and/or friends.  There is nothing worse than a server bringing out the meal when you haven't even finished the salad yet, or conversely, one who is nowhere to be found when you want the check.

There is a difference between grabbing a bite and a casual dining experience and sometimes we have to choose the restaurant accordingly.   ;D

snip...

On a side note...but related, I just read something the other day about how a restaurant owner in NYC did his own study on the use of smart phones, etc and how it's hurting his business. Apparently, people are taking 6 minutes longer (on average) to eat and finish their meals in restaurants...playing with their phones and not reading the menu...playing with their phones and not eating....taking pictures of their food, and finally, playing with their phones while they send their food back to be reheated because they were too distracted to eat it while it was hot...lol.

So, add 6 minutes to every customer's visit, and at the end of the day, it's all taking valuable time from other potential customers. I hadn't thought of it until I read it, but it's a bit disturbing imho.

Irony:  A bunch of folks posting random babble on THIS site about how they don't like FB because of all the random babble.  Hahahaha!!  So stay off the site already, right?

I have  small business, and a small business page, and FB works really well for keeping folks updated.  It is good that other folks can comment on the page, *and* that I can monitor the comments.  Fotos, scanned maps, excel results tables, etc. all post very readily and look good on the page, which makes me look smart.

Oh...I meant Amazing irony.
