My Coast- to Coast in less than 50 hours report (long)

Hi Brian

Great ride and report. A group of us did a BB Gold from the start of Mississippi to Venice LA in April this year. The year before we rode from Angle Inlet the most norther point in the US to Key West Florida in 48 hours. I have a personal appreciation for what you have accomplished.

I am curios as to how many miles per tank and how much fuel you were able to put in the stock tank.

I'm the ass who left him on the beach.  I knew better, but Brian was being overly polite and promised he was just running into town for a phone.  I shoulda stayed with him, just his random mumblings shoulda kept me there.  So, note to self and any others who meet up with a rider who has completed this kinda event.  Stay with them till they have some other support.  Brian was exhausted, no doubt about it.  Aint Brians fault, it was mine.  I coulda called and asked for grace from work, they wouldnt had an issue, heck, they was in total awe that anyone would do something a dumb as ride CtC in under 50 ON A MOTORCYCLE!  So, guys/gals, take it to heart, never leave before they leave, the smallest chore becomes a mountain and any help will prove valuable.  As punishment, I will redraw his route in a coupla years and best his time to boot!  So, Brian, I'll let ya know the when and since I aint got no family out that way I may need a couch for a coupla days

The mileage was all over the place- it started out well into the 40+ MPG range but when I hit the headwinds in South Dakota it dropped like a stone. Once the rain started in MT, the wind died down and the mileage picked back up.

The stock C-14 fuel tank is 5.8 gallons but will really hold just 6.0 gallons. I never used that much of the tank of this ride though.

This is my stop log for the trip- the formatting is not very good but you should be able to make sense out of it. The format is Gal., Tot. cost, Tot. Mileage, Tank mileage, MPG. for everything but the first fuel stop and any food stops.

I disagree- not your fault in any part or to the least degree. Besides that, it all worked out just fine and did have a humorous component (yes, even at the time it was kinda' funny).

Yeah, if you make it east look me up. I will take the photos of you looking gruesome on that trip. 

It would be interesting to do another CC 50 but going east- both plusses and minuses to doing it that way. The biggest downside I can see is the more congested and aggressive driving in the east as compared with the west, and that would be happening when you were most fatigues. Going west at least the roads are very open and more forgiving during the part of the ride where your performance is at its worst. Another thing is the stress caused by constantly worrying about a deer strike; they are FAR more deer carcasses on the sides of the road in the east than the mid- west or west. The upside is that the wind would be behind you for most or all of the trip, and fuel management is easier in the east where there are fuel stations every 30 feet or so.

Opps- I forgot to mention that part. I was trying for an Iron Butt recognized CC 50, or Coast- to Coast in 50 hours or less. Just like you rode 1,000 miles in 24 hours or less for a Saddlesore 1000. As it works out, I also made two SS 1000's, back to back, as well as two Bun Burner Golds, back to back (1,500 miles in 24 hours). I didn't apply for any of those though as I already have the Saddlesore tag from some time ago and besides, the CC 50 kind of trumps all the runs contained inside of it.

Because I traveled a route so far north, the CC-50 will be labeled 'The hard way'. The much more common route is between Jacksonville, FL and San Diego, CA and is 'only' about 2,350 miles. My run was over 3,100.

The trip itself was to see my son who lives in Tacoma, the CC-50 was just something I squeezed in along the way. My wife flew both ways like most sane people would have done.

My trip wasn't all about the 1000, it was about seeing places people and special friends. I just did that 1000 (actually 1100) to hurry and get past the roads I ride all the time, zilch riding compared to yours.  I hope to join you on one of your crazy LD adventures one day!

Don't you just hate it when a newbie shows up and resurrects an old thread?  I know sorry, but I'll do it anyway.

I can't help but wonder what you are running for tires and how they held up after 3k highway miles?  Did you need to buy a new set for the ride home?

Easy answer. Michelin PR2s. And they made it all the way.

As someone already said, Michelin PR2s. No, rode the same set out and back, and in fact they are still on the bike right now. They had about 2K miles on them before I started the trip so I arrived in WA with about 5K miles on them. They looked good and rode great but the rear tire was fairly flat from all the highway miles. I reduced the pressure in them about 2 PSI (down to 40 PSI) to reduce the flatting on the way home and it did help. Arrived back home with 9K on the tires and they looked and rode well. I have gotten over 16K miles out of PR2s in the past so expect at least 12K out of this set (currently over 10K miles and they look great, and still handle very well). I would like to try a set of PR3s but am so happy with PR2s that I will probably grab one more set of the -2's when I do need new tires.

No problem resurrecting old threads on this forum as far as I know. This isn't an old thread yet anyway so no problem either way.

I'll let you know all about the PR3s soon. Just got mine put on Tuesday. They feel great so far. It is like a new bike with the change over from stockers which went 10,500 miles. I just put about 600 miles on the PR3s since then. They love the corners. Maybe too much. Waiting for a big rain to test the water shedding. Should be interesting.
I too almost hit 17,000 miles on the PR2s so my tire mileage should give you a good idea of what to expect.
