Mod for Tall Screens
« on: October 21, 2011, 06:30:05 AM »
Gents,
Simple, and cheap modification, great comfort increase. This mod significantly reduced the buffeting ( and headaches) resulting from the added height and movement of I was getting with my Cee Baileys "wind sail".
Caveats: 2009 Connie, 6'1" and use Shoei Quest (same was true with my SyMax2).

Spent $3.98 on 3/8" adhesive foam weather strip from Lowe's. Placed two 2" strips right behind the windshield mounts to fill the gap between the mount and the fairing.

Unscientific results: significantly reduced movement of top of shield up to 85mph. In turn it reduces my noggin moving, and no headaches. Also believe it channels the air better on the backside of the shield reducing pressure (opinion only).

Will provide pics when I can get to them.

Interesting idea; thanks for the post.  I have same windshield and helmet, and an additional 4 inches of height.  Not exactly sure where you are putting the weather strip.  Any pics?

Yes, pics would greatly be appreciated.

I have CB Ultra tour and it seems to be very quiet with little or no buffeting. I thought having the gap let some air in from the bottom would actually reduce buffeting from the top by filling the low pressure area right behind the windshield. I would still be interested in seeing what you have done.

They will come. Unfortunately I am not savvy enough to pull the pics from the iPad I am using. Currently away from normal computers.

By the way, I have been using the windshield full down, and normally do not extend it more than an inch from bottom.

We need pictures !!!  This sounds like a pretty inexpensive and easy way to fix what has been a nagging problem.

Bump! C'mon with those pictures man!  I've put foam tape all over my front end, haven't found the improvement you describe yet.  We need your help!

I'd like to see these pictures too. I feel like I'm after the holy grail in this whole buffeting fix thing. I'm thinking my next move will be a Vario X-Screen, but if I could save the $140 for other things that would be.....well......groovy!

Sorry it took so long gents.
Here is the mod I talked about. The weather strip is attached to the backside of the windshield mount. After further riding, the strip could use a little more thickness, especially if you extend the shield more than one inch higher. I rarely do, so it works great for me.

Let us know your input, we all may find a better solution.

Thanks for the pics. Now it is clear to me where the strip is applied. I don't notice a buffeting problem with my CB Ultra Tour but I do get significant wind on my hands when I put the windshield just a little higher then normal. I wonder if this will help that.

Great if it works for you  but you still have a gap all the way across the bottom of the windshield that air comes in, Sesms you would have to stop that air flow also.

Stopping the airflow under the shield will actually increase the buffetting your head recieves. This mod may improve the windshield shake, but I don't believe it will change head and body buffetting in any way. If it works for you, thats awesome.

Exactly what I would think as well.

This mod stopped the windshield itself from "fluttering" at the top. I in turn noticed a decrease in the amount of buffeting I felt at speed, which consequently stopped the headaches. There may be other factors at play; helmet, height, gurth, speed, placebo, etc..

It does nothing for hand protection.

The challenge really is supporting the heavier screen, which unfortunately is not solved by KIPASS.

Heresy!!  ;D  Seriously though I might try this for that reason alone. The top of my CB Ultra Tour jumps around a lot. I'm always afraid I'm going to break the wish bone.

Looking at where he has the weatherstriping, it looks like it might work to "channel" the air going under the windshield more toward the middle.  In other words, it might prevent some "spillage" out the sides, putting more air into the vacuum behind the screen.   I've got my front end all apart installing my HID kit so I'm going to go ahead and look at trying this before I get it all put together.

Hey, barber, I'd very much appreciate some pics of your set up before tupperware goes back on.
