Special tool 57001-1394
« on: December 30, 2011, 03:55:17 PM »
Has anybody purchased one of these ?    Special tool 57001-1394
Best price I found was around  $138.00
Would a plain Jane multimeter do the same job?
Any input would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

The only picture I could find looks like an analog multimeter.  Get yourself a nice auto-ranging digital multimeter.  It will be easier to use and less expensive.

Believe it or not, but a $ 3 (on sale) harbor freight digital multimeter is perfectly fine for electrical work on your car and bike.  I typically buy several on sale and just throw them away when the battery finally dies.  You must select the range manually, but that's no big deal.

I warns against using a megger or a meter with a "large capacity battery" when test the stator.

I doubt most people even know what a megger is, and how many people would know how to test a stator?  To do normal testing of your electrical system, any meter will suffice.  I'm sure there is nothing magical about the kawasaki meter and that any high impedance meter would give the exact same readings.

Either buy something nice like a Fluke that will last a lifetime, or pick up a cheap one if it will only be used occasionally.  Either way, you will save money and be able to test anything that you need to.
