Seat Re-contouring Experiment
« on: January 29, 2012, 07:26:11 PM »
Hey folks! Been quite some time since I've posted. Haven't done much with the bike in several months. Now I'm gearing up for some riding, and got a wild hair. The seat design has never really worked for me, especially on longer rides. I figure I'll be ordering some aftermarket seat soon, so I thought I'd do a bit of re-contouring myself before spending a lot of money on a new seat.

First was to remove the seat ridge that forces me into the tank so badly. I cut it back about 4 inches then contoured the rest of the seat to match.

While testing the fit on the bike, I got the idea to make it more like a saddle using the ridge I previously cut off, locating it to the front. Yeah, strange idea.

It felt good while pre-testing on the bike so I decided to give it a go and put a layer of quilting over it and put the seat cover back on. You can see that the cover doesn't fit around the area where the ridge was, but I figured that if I liked it this way enough that I'd have it re-covered.

The seat idea was to keep me from being pushed in to the tank, pull me back a bit and maybe even lower myself a bit to keep from adding risers (now I've got to lower the pegs...). Rode it around the neighborhood and the jury's still out. Not sure I like the design yet. I might just remove the ridge addition to the front and see how that works. If not, Corbin here I come!!!!

Here's pics of it on the bike. Cover looks terrible right now. But keep in mind, I'm still testing!!

Nice project Rush!  8)

FYI, Jeremy has a cover for sale in the classifieds that might look pretty cool on that seat, here's the link in case you're interested...

www.diymotorcycleseat.com has a lot of useful information on seat re-contouring.

IMHO, you could taper that front section into a triangle (narrow at the back, wide at the front), to fit much more comfortably.

Great web site It1, thanks! Looks like I had the right idea based on some of those pictures of modifications!

What did you use to cut the foam?     Thanks...

I used a large, very sharp bread knife on it. I looked everywhere around me for an electric knife, but I swear they must not make them anymore!! I've heard that the electric knife is the was to go.

Friend of mine used one on his, then took a belt-sander to smooth and shape it more!  :o

You did  a nice job cutting the foam.  Mine usually end up looking like OJ Simpson did the work.

Recently, on another bike forum, yoga mats were mentioned as a foam possibility.  I picked up a 5mm mat at WalMart for under $20, and am quite happy with the results so far.  It is easy to work with - cutting, layering, shaping.  It is much firmer than the thicker foams that I have been able to find locally.  Apparently there are differences in thickness and quality of yoga mats, but I just went with the thickest pad that felt well-made.

That's debatable, I had a sargent on my 09 and it wasn't much better for me than the stocker
